@KatyLovesJoey: it would really depend on what you're looking for. A new HL just opened near me and wow, that store's huge! If Michaels and Joann mated, HL would be their kid. But for the most part, they have similar stuff. And they all always have coupons!! :) what kind of stuff were you looking to buy?
Hobby Lobby is much bigger than Michaels. In my opinion it's a nicer store with a better layout than both Joann's and Michaels. However, my mom and I both agreed that even with coupons Hobby Lobby is more expensive than Michaels, Joann's, and AC Moore.
i love hobby lobby, but there are none near me and yes they tend to be pricier. i love michaels too and they have a very good selection, but i tend to go to joann's more just because they always send me coupons. i can't remember the last time i paid full price for something there!
@anteater: Mostly I was thinking vases (for centerpieces and the candy buffet). I'll probably wind up getting them at the dollar store, but the ones around me are so hit-or-miss that it makes me nervous.
I was hoping that HL was cheaper than Michaels...I think they tend to be expensive...
they are similar prices with a 40% but they offer SOOO much more stuff that micheals doesn't even begin to carry. Only problem is their 40%'s are run by a code on the coupon so unlike micheals i can't just print 5 copies. lol I have one an hour away and i cannot WAIT to go back. its totally worth the drive!
I don't know how HL is because we only have Michaels and Joanns near me. I prefer Michaels over Joann because Michaels have those 40% or 50% coupons in their circulars every week.
Hobby Lobby is always closed on Sundays, so remember that if you're going to make a trip out of town to go there. Of the three, I like HL best, then a good Joann (some are small), then Michaels.
Hmmm, i always choose HL over Michaels or JoAnns. I only buy things when they're on sale for the wedding, because they are on sale every other week. And I think they are cheaper by far in my opinion. This week flower stems are on sale! Woot! Hopefully they are again in two weeks, so I can go to a bigger city and hit up 3 or 4 of them.
I only have a Hobby Lobby and Joann's near me and the Hobby Lobby is bigger but with worse customer service. (Also it bothers me that HL doesn't use barcodes, they could be keying in and charging me ANYTHING)
Joann's is smaller but better customer service and more varied pricing. With HL it's either full price or 50% off and their 40% off regular priced coupon (check the website)
I have all three here. I prefer HL over the other two, but until the new HL opens, the other two are much closer/more convenient. It's way bigger and has way more stuff, and lots of awesome home decor. They're always having 50 or 40% off sales, which is awesome when doing a wedding.
@KatyLovesJoey: oh hmm, might be much pricier at the craft stores! Try different dollar stores too -- out here, we have a lot of 99cents only stores and dollar trees and they tend to have different things at different branches. Also, try goodwill/salvation army/other similar stores! I've gotten quite a few for 50cents or a dollar (for smaller ones).
And never never never go to HL, Michaels or Joann without coupons!!! They all ALWAYS have coupons, some overlap weeks but there's at least one always active. If you have an iphone/ipod touch/ipad, all three have apps where you can get coupons. not sure about other devices. But Michaels and HL also have them on their websites, and Joann can text them to you.
HL always has 40% off one item; the others vary from 40-50% off one item or 10-20% whole purchase (including sale or clearance items!) or a set $ off amount discounts. :)
Michaels all the way! But I choose that because Hobby Lobby and Joan both conform to a LOT of practices I am no morally or politically comfortable with.
They don't have a great true "wedding" section, but if you need other decorations, frames, silk flowers, fabrics, paper good and/or other crafting supplies, HL is where it's at. I pick them on Michael's. Be sure to print their weekly 40% off coupon and know what's on sale what week when you go. Sometimes I'll go 2 weeks in a row because frames are 50% one week and then metal goods on sale a week later.
we have all 3 and Hobby Lobby is where it's at!! Plus they always have 40% off deals on their products
I always go to Michaels for crafts and Hobby Lobby for home things, fabrics, and some crafts. In the end it depends on exactly what you want. They both have vases and glass containers. Hobby Lobby ALWAYS has something on sale. If something isn't on sale I'd keep checking the sales papers because more than likely it will be soon.
@mchitt329: They could be charging you anything, but as someone who used to work for Hobby Lobby many, many moons ago, I assure you they're way more likely to be hooking you up than overcharging, unless you just go in there being super bitchy to the employees (which judging by your posts would surprise me a great deal). Even then, it's way more likely that you'll just get your fragiles wrapped badly. :D
I like Hobby Lobby but they chose the worst location ever it's out in the country like an hour away from everything and that includes us lol. Michaels is the best of the major craft stores because of the sales. I got all my 26 inch vases there for $13 each with the 50% off coupons and we just went back again and again until we had enough. I did buy things at Hobby Lobby, AC Moore, Joann Fabrics and Michaels for our wedding though so they are all worth a look depending on what you need.
I love Hobby Lobby!! It has a wider selection of fabric for sure than Michaels but isn't so sewing craft specific as JoAnns. And never pay full price there, take a coupon or wait a week and it will be 30-50% off.
@EffieTrinket: Bahaha! they would totally do that to me! I don't react well to the bad service I've received (I'm sure it's more of a MY local Hobby Lobby than ALL HL's)....
Thanks for all of the info ladies! It's supposed to be nicer around here this weekend, so maybe I'll see if FI wants to take a ride, at least just to check it out. Of course, craft shopping is his LEAST favorite type of shopping...but he'll deal. ;)
@KatyLovesJoey: I went to all three specifically looking for candy buffet jars and Hobby Lobby (even with coupons or their 50% off sale) was the most expensive for jars. I was looking faero I martini glass vase and apothecary jars and they were cheaper at Michaels and Home Goods by far
They have similar stuff but probably more! It's pretty big. They have a lot of home decor stuff too. But prices kind of depend. Some things are about the same, but I plan to get my jars/vases there because they always have glass products at a low or sale price.
I don't shop at Hobby Lobby because I don't support their crazy religious stances with their employees. I do all of my shopping that I can at JoAnns since they have the best coupon policy.
@KatyLovesJoey: Go check it out for yourself. I would love to hear your opinion. But once u do and see that the prices are higher I recommend you go to Home Goods. They have lots of apothecary vases for $10 or less! The martini glass vase was cheapest at Michaels. Next was AC Moore I believe.
@KatyLovesJoey: Most recently they decided to evade federal law and prohibit their employees from having access to birth control. Their medical insurance doesn't cover it.
ilove all of the stores, but i have to say hobby lobby you can literally buy ANYTHING at
I prefer Hobby Lobby over Joannes and Michaels. Unlike some PPs, I feel HL is cheaper... but maybe I am buying different things than others? Idk? HL all the way!

I see lots of bees post about getting great deals at Hobby Lobby, but I don't have one very close to me. I found one just about driving distance, but before I go...
Are they similar to Michaels? How are their prices?
Figured I'd ask before I make the drive...
