@mrspinesol:  I have a massive family so a lot of my traditions are with them. However, we do have a few of our own:

Cutting down our own tree (sorry, green bees)

Taking a photo card that a company prints (I could never commit to making cards – no time)

Hosting xmas eve (this is new)

Giving our puppy a stocking and wrapped presents (yes, really)

Opening our presents to each other alone without my family

Baking xmas cookies (mostly me, but he helps)

Driving around with hot chocolate looking at xmas lights

Watching xmas movies

I can’t think of any more. We do a lot of xmas stuff, lol.

We watch Love Actually, split a half-gallon of eggnog, and decorate our tree!

On actual Christmas I make Grands cinnamon rolls for breaskfast and we basically eat dessert all day!

Our traditions aren’t necessarily Christmas-related, but they all happen because it’s the holidays and we get time off, fun things are happening in the city, and there is sparkly lights and music everywhere!

(1) Like @MrsPanda99, we drive around with hot chocolate and look at Christmas lights. We used to go to an area with huuuuuuge mansions (like seriously 20+ bedroom palaces) but recently the properties there haven’t been decorated. Boo. This year, we’ll probably go to Starbucks instead and walk around looking at fancy department store window decorations (like below, there’s music too! fun!)

(2)We go to a Christmas market in a historic area (below). They have great mulled wine. It’s not Christmas without mulled wine!

(3) I go to a department store and binge-purchase Xmas presents for my in laws at the very last minute. This is all new to me okay?!

(4) The weekend before Xmas, we drive out of the city to see FH’s family. They have general Xmas festivities, like gifts, turkey, stockings, a tree, etc. They live out in the country and it’s really nice to see snow sitting on trees and looking fluffy on the ground.

(5) On Christmas eve which tends to be the start to FH’s break from work, we tend to go see my family, either at home or in Florida, depending on where they are. Holiday travel is a tradition I’d like to give up, to be honest.

Every year, we fit in watching the Grinch, Elf, and a Charlie Brown Christmas.

@letigre:  Is that the Bay Eaton Centre store window? I can see your reflection! Lol.

@MrsPanda99:  It is, but I stole the picture off google images, lol! I haven’t gone to see the new window this year. It’s my Saturday morning plan!

@letigre:  I was going to say, that is not what I pictured you looking like! But I didn’t want to be rude. I work downtown so I see that window all the time. People always stand there in my way! Lol.

We have a crazy number of traditions from my family alone, that my husband now gets to participate in, including that we wear mickey mouse hats on Christmas day (my extended family on one side) and this year he finally gets his ears!  There might be an embarrasing ceremony of some sort, with him kneeling and the ears being placed on his head…

But for just the two of us, we don’t have tons yet.

  • We decided last year that we would open gifts at the others’ family Christmas, so I open gifts from him with his family, and he opens gifts from me with mine.
  • We also get a tree and always use my beetle to drive it home, and we decorate that as well as put up lights outside.
  • I start listening to Christmas music at least a week before Thanksgiving and he complains until after Thanksgiving.
  • We drive around to look at lights too!
  • I love seeing the zoos that put up light displays, and want to make that a tradition.
  • And we have to watch Elf, A Muppet Christmas Carol, The Santa Clause, and as many other Christmas movies as possible.
  • I always get an advent calendar with chocolates in it, and this year he wanted one too, so we both have them!
  • Christmas cards

Thats about it…  I really love traditions around Christmas time!

@MrsPanda99:  I LOVE the Bay windows at this time of the year. I live right by Holt’s on Bloor, which isn’t nearly as nice, and it’s a lot more barren in the evening. When they first did the holiday windows this year, we grabbed mochas at Starbs and went to watch, but while it’s nice, it’s just crap to buy. The Bay usually has a story! I’m going to be one of those people standing in your way to work soon, haha. Sorry in advance!

@mrspinesol:  We do that too! For my husband’s birthday this year, his cake said “happy birthday, dad” from our dog, lol. I’m glad there are like-minded pet parents out there 🙂 makes me feel less, you know, insane.

@mrspinesol:  I used to live in Florida (moved down there from Pennsylvania) and I HATED IT! I lasted one year and decided to move back home. I missed the seasons and the Christmas time spirit and such. Everybody where I lived seemed to have no sense of community or goodwill either. I cannot tell you how depressed I was at Christmas time!!!!!!
