    I might knock on the door and ask if everything's OK. Maybe she'll think twice about what she's doing if she knows you can hear so much. Good luck.

    How old is the girl?

    I'm going to repeat, that I'd call the cops. I wouldn't let her know you can hear it because then she'll probably just be sneakier/quieter and how would that help the little girl? :/

    Call the cops and let us know how long it takes them to get there. That is flat out child abuse.

    @AmeliaBedelia: Good idea. You don't want to turn her to the stealth hitter.

    I'm a mandatory reporter. Call the cops (if you haven't already!)

    Getting involved with the mother is not your place. If she's abusing her child, she's done it before and will do it again. Knocking on the door one time won't change anything.

    If its nothing, that's for the cops to decide. It is not your job to decide if she's abusing her or not, just call!

    @jedeve: I agree, not to mention in a real abusive relationship the mom will blame the child because she couldnt get it right to begine with or was being whiney etd and it could make it worse.

    I would call the police, and also make sure child services are notified as well.

    @Bostonsmom:

    Oh, well, the cops will take care of that. If there's suspicion of abuse they call DFCS and they remove the child from the home immediately and begin an investigation.

    It started off with the mom just yelling, then escilated to the spanking then eventually like beating of her poor child all because she couldnt spell "what". It makes me so sick that people would actually act this way with their children my blood is boiling!

    @FutureMrsChaney:

    My FH used to be a police investigator and he told me the story once of how he had to investigate a mother for child abuse because her son forgot to bring home his report card for her to sign and she beat him so hard with a wire clothes hanger you could see the imprint of it in the welts on his back. And he just forgot to bring it home; HE HAD STRAIGHT A'S ON IT. FH said he used to go insane on people who abused children. He had that mother locked up, AND her boyfriend who didn't stop her.

    @ohheavenlyday: I cant stand it! those are your children your supposed to love and protect them not hurt them... It kills me because I know so many couples that would love to have children and cant but people who are able to have children and beat them boggles my mind!

    @FutureMrsChaney: Ugh that makes me sick too. Plus, your ability to spell is going to decrease under intense stress!

    If I were you, I would start keeping a record of anything suspicious you see going on. It can be a real process for a child to be taken away from a parent, so don't be surprised if the girl isn't immediately removed. (or is removed and returned).

    Find the number to the local CPS and call whenever you see something that you even think might be abuse or neglect. Like, if the kids are left at home alone without a baby sitter and are under 12. If parent seems to be intoxicated while being the sole provider for the kid. If the girl looks dirty, bruised, etc. Also take note of any siblings.

    Granted, don't feel like you have to spy on the family or anything, but sometimes these kids can get so overlooked that it takes forever for someone to notice abuse. Thank you for stepping in!!

    Oh gods. I hope the poor girl is ok.

    Whenever I hear about children being treated like this I always want to kidnap them! I don't wan't to be a mother and I'm not quite ready, but I know that being with me would be better than being with mothers like this.

    There is a case in our building of a husband beating his wife. Apparently the RCMP have been called SEVERAL times on this person, but the police can't isolate the unit the noise is coming from. They knocked on my door one day because they wanted to make sure it wasn't me - they searched my apartment and everything!!!  People are calling becuase they hear someone screaming and crying along with thudding sounds. I haven't seen them in a while, but I hope the poor woman is alright and she got some help. It was probably a few floors above us.

    @Valhalla: oh that's so scary.

    When I was in college I heard a guy screaming and a girl crying coming from the apartment kitty corner from us. My roommate and i debated calling the police, in case it was just a lover's spat, then decided we should anyway cause maybe it would be a wake up call in their relationship even if there wasn't abuse.

    The squad car came and the police started pounding on the door, yelling (after they didn't answer) "YOU BETTER F*ING OPEN UP I COULD HERE YOU ALL THE WAY IN MY CAR" (3 floors down). The weird thing? The guy's roommate answered the door. I couldn't believe there had been a 3rd person there the whole time. Maybe he was too scared to step in.

    I have no idea what happened, but my roommate said that the police came by a few weeks later the police came by looking for him.
