New flooring. We just purchased our house about 6 months ago and with two dogs the carpet is pretty distroyed. It wasn't nice carpet to begin with though. We will be doing hardwoods next! :D
ETA: I have corian countertops. LOVE THEM!
hardwoods in the living room,
new carpets in the bedrooms
Update master bathroom (it's stuck in the 80's)
Replace wood siding
Update fireplace to stacked stone
@Miss Seersucker: We just got new flooring (carpet and hardwood) and it makes a HUGE difference! Our hairy beast of a dog sheds so much and is also a slob so the hardwood is so nice!
I've been nagging FI for years to fix up our backyard. But again, the darn dog just tears it up anyway!
i want/ need a new roof! :) and then id like to finish landscaping the front and back yard! and we have 5 windows left to replace! and i want to redo the laundry room and bathroom... i have alot to do haha!
floors for sure! and bedroom.. need to get the closet organized.
we have carpet.. it isn't that old but with two bad dogs.. UGH doesnt last!
and my closet is not organized and me & my DH have a shoe fetish so we have like 4 shoe racks LOL only two fit in the closet and since i cant get DH to put his shoes on the rack in the closet we have one in the living room... not nicelooking at all!
also we plan on painting the inside of the house soon...
What wouldn't I like to do?! Even though it's just our starter home I still want to replace everything...reface kitchen cabinets, replace appliances with stainless steel ones, new flooring throughout the house (both new carpeting and installing hardwood floors). Completely re-do the bathrooms, and change light fixtures/fans.
The sad thing is...the house isn't too old and not in bad shape! I just have big ideas :)
If I had the money, I would jump at the chance to:
-Extend the hardwood floors from the kitchen and DR into the LR, foyer, and Master bedroom.
-Replace the laminate countertops in the all the bathrooms and put in granite or marble
-Put in tile flooring in the bathrooms and get rid of the plastic 2-pc shower thing and just tile the whole thing and add a glass door
-Replace my white fridge and dishwasher with black ones.
-Paint!! I still have the builder's colors in all the rooms on the first floor except the kitchen and the DR
ETA: Finish off the basement! It would make a cool workout/pool room!
We need to finish up stuff like the built-ins around our fireplace and buy some furniture for the house. The biggest project I CAN'T WAIT to tackle, though, is our empty slate of a backyard. I can't wait to throw down cement, have seating areas, planting areas, BBQ/bar area, our fireplace, etc.
So many people are fans of hardwood floors! I have to admit, it would be really nice with our zoo. Our carpet is ancient, so we're probably going to have to do something with the floors before we sell.
I have quite a list! We just put in hardwoods so that is finally done!
I think thats about it for now!!!! If we stay much longer than 5 years then we will have to start another list with things like roof, a/c, etc.
We have a list too! We have only lived here about 7 months and we have already painted a few rooms, changed light fixtures, replaced shutters, and did a lot of landscaping. We still need to :
I know theres probably some smaller things that i am forgetting. We actually love doing home improvement things, I just wish we had more money :)
@Blueshoes2: My counters are the first to go as well!
In addition to that, I'd love to put a fireplace in...but that's going to be a huge PITA!
@Bostongrl25: You just made me remember there are a few more light fixtures and fans that we need to replace! We are waiting to find some good ones on sale.
Well we recently learned that there is no insulation between our walls in our house. It's just cinder block and dry wall. This explains why I'm always freezing cold. The quote is in and they are going to be shooting foam insulation very soon from our basement up to the attic and I cannot wait!
Painter is coming next Wednesday for estimate on 5 rooms.
Hardwood floors in living room and kitchen/dining area.
Concrete floor to be poured in basement which is finished (except for floor). Would give much more space!
Turn office into 2nd guest room once basement is finished. Turn corner in basement into office.

1) entertainment system
2) new baseboards and wainscotting
3) kitchen table/chair set
4) granite in kitchen
5) landscaping
6) tile the fireplace over
Damn you HGTV
I would love to add a backsplash to the kitchen, but my more immediate need is more space. I want to convert the attic into an extra room because FI's ping pong table is taking up SO much space in the loft.
We have our renovations basically planned for the next three years!
this spring/summer we are doing our roof, landscaping the front yard, redoing the exterior of our kitchen, changing the door that leads out to the backyard, redoing our ductwork and redoing a beam in the basement by putting in a cement footing and putting up a wall.
So many things on my wish list... never enough money!
Maintenance:
remove pool in backyard, electrical work (some lights/outlets don't work), new motor for hot tub
Kitchen:
New cabinet doors/hardware, new countertops, new flooring, stainless steel appliances: priority is dishwasher and then stove. new sink and faucet
Bathroom: new faucet
If I really, really had an extra 20-40K, this is what I would do:
Convert my carport to a new master bedroom/bath, convert my daughter's bedroom (smallest of 3) to a dining room since it is across the hall from the kitchen and on the other side of the wall from the living room. Knock down all of the walls around it and put in a see-through fireplace between the living room and dining room. And if there is any money left over, possibly begin finishing the basement.
Here is an example of the fireplace if it makes sense

What I have already done:
I'm with twentyeleven, I think it'd be easier to respond with what I would keep! haha! We bought a pre-owned home (built in 1982) that looked like it retained all the original interior components and have already begun renovations. Fun topic btw. Here's my list of what's left:
Will do this year:
What else is high-priority for doing:
There's also tons of other things I'd like to do, but those are things that we NEED to do.
Wow, the list is endless! And I feel like by the time you get to the end of the list (if thats even possible) that it'll be so long that you'll want to start it all over again. We just bought our house a few months ago and have done nothing... luckily it already has nice hardwood floors, updated kitchen, and at least updated tile bathroom floor. First thing I want to do is just paint a few of the rooms. Then....in no particular order
- Update the HVAC systems- Remodel the bathrooms- Change the lighting fixtures- Paint the exterior- Refinish the deck- Fireplace insert or woodstove
And the improvements that just involve buying stuff and making it feel like home..- curtains- dining table- new bedroom set
My boyfriend and I actually do quite a few renovations for our places.. We bought our house last month and so far we have done:
Otherwise I want to:
Our last condo we completely renovated it top to bottom.. Spent around $35,000 on it and it looked gorgeous.. Now I wish we had many of those things in this house since I enjoyed them before!
We have quite a few ideas of what we want to do to this house but it will just take time. I'm sure there is more haha.
We're doing a big remodel project this Spring/early Summer (hiring contractors for most of it).
- New flooring in the entire house - new wood floors downstairs, new carpets upstairs, and new travertine floors in the bathrooms
- Kitchen - new backsplash, cabinets repainted, ugly florecent box fixture removed, canned lighting installed
- Bathrooms - cabinets repainted, new counter tops, new fixtures, new travertine in the shower, new shower door.
- trim painted in the entire house, entryway painted
Our big DIY project (other than cleaning and organizing the entire house) - is relandscaping the yard.
If I just put my things to do, it'll depress myself so I've added what's already been done.
Already done

We really want new kitchen counters. Our counters are cheap and old - they're literally crumbling in some spots. I'd like granite, or even corian!
What's the next home project that you'd like to tackle (or pay someone else to tackle for you)?
