We have ADT.  Yes, I would highly recommend it.  Their service prevented a break-in from happening at our home while we were at work.  I can’t say enough good things about them.

Someone had tried to kick in our side garage door, which is heavy duty metal door with deadbolt locks (the garage is attached to the house by a breezeway); it jiggled the door enough to set off the alarm which scared them off, so nothing was stolen.   ADT called me immediately at work and then called the police and sent them straight to our house.

In my opinion, security systems are well worth the money.

@Bostongrl25:  We’re getting Slomin’s installed this weekend, actually. My parents have the system that we’re getting, and they’ve been very happy with theirs. I can’t comment on ours yet, of course, but I’m happy to keep you updated with the isntallation process and all that!

I will say, however, that we went into our consultation with the Slomin’s rep thinking we wanted one type of system, and he sort of bullied us into getting the other. Now that our installation appointment is so close, I’m really starting to regret going with his suggestion. I’m about to call them and see if we can change it, because I just don’t think the one we agreed to is the best option for us. I let him convince us because I figured, this guy does this for a living, he should know what’s best. But when I think about it logistically, I just don’t think it makes sense. :/

@Bostongrl25:   We have the wired system, where we live wireless isn’t available quite yet.  Or, maybe it is now, I need to check, lol.

It runs on our land line which services our DSL and home phone.  We have a wireless router for our laptops, Roku, etc., but the security system doesn’t run off that.  Possibly it could but we also have the “line cut” feature so that if someone ever cuts the phone line the alarm will go off immediately.  Also, when the power goes out there’s a backup battery system; the company is alerted and will call just to check up on things.  They have great customer service.

They told me over the phone what had happened because the police or us couldn’t figure it out.  When we got home nobody was there and nothing was stolen or disturbed, just the alarm system had been triggered, so at first the police thought it was a false alarm.  I called ADT to have them reset it and they told me to check on “door in zone B” and it turned out to be that particular garage door (there are 3 garage doors).  When we looked at it more closely we could see a muddy footprint and a slight indention where it had been kicked.  We’re thinking it was probably kids since the door didn’t get kicked in very hard.  We called the police back to file a report of an attempted break in and not a false alarm.

We have CPI and they’re great. Most of the people on our street have CPI. Fortunately we haven’t had any close calls yet.

@Sunfire:  We have ADT also.  Our house came with it and we could have uninstalled it but its not a big payment so we decided to keep it.  Plus a lot of the neighbors have it and in our neighborhood a lot of people walk their dogs or just go for walks in general.  It gives me piece of mind while I’m at work.  My oldest who’s 11 has stayed at home by himself when he’s been sick (I work 5 minutes away). The alarms are on and he knows what to do if they go off.  When I was his age I was home alone one day and 2 guys just walked into our house.  They saw me and walked out the door but sat on the porch for several minutes.  I called the police but by the time they got there the men had left.  I was lucky they were surprised to see me.  I don’t know if they figured because I was young and home that my parents were too and that’s why they didn’t do anything else.  Or if they were just intending to rob the place unarmed and leave.  It was so scary.

We don’t have one yet.  We just bought the house and are having all of the windows replaced first but we will have one installed as soon as possible before we start moving things in.  We are pretty sure we are going to go with Cox but we will definitely be getting one that uses Internet instead of a phone line to stay in touch with the company.

We have ADT but don’t use it becasue it costs more a month to run than our home insurance discount.  It’s also annoying to us everytime it beeps when you open the door (we had it shut off).  We do have a 100 lb dog, so that helps.
