Personally, I would go with a balcony and try and get a higher floor, if you can.  In terms of buying excursions through the line or not, I booked with the cruise on the two I have taken and plan on doing this for the honeymoon as well.  I am too nervous about missing the boat to do an excursion not sanction through the cruise.  If you are just going to go around the town, then no reason not to go on your own, but anything further away from the boat, I’d stick with the cruise’s programs.

Which line are you guys going to cruise with?

Hi! I actually went on that exact same cruise 2 years ago. We booked all our excursions through 3rd party people and have no trouble. Actually, I found that a lot of people do it and the excursion operators are in constant contact with the ship so you don’t have to worry about being late. I found all of our information on cruisecritic.com and it was very helpful. We did cave tubing and zip lining in Belize, SNUBA in Isla Roatan and swimming with sting rays in Grand Cayman. No complaints about any of them! Hope this helps!

We’re cruising to Bermuda for our honeymoon in October 2011. This will be our first cruise but we are definitely getting atleast a balcony (we may spring for a suite). I know a number of people who have cruised before and all have suggested a balcony. They’ve said that an inside cabin is not ideal because its basically just a room with no windows. I don’t know about you, but that would drive me insane. I need to atleast know if its light outside! Getting a porthole room is just not appealing to me. My FMIL went on a cruise last January and she said some of the most fun she had was just hanging out on their balcony, drinking wine while cruising the Caribbean.

@Mrs. Boom: Just wanted to say hi from another Jacksonville bride-to-be.

🙂 The first cruise we went on was to Jamaica and a few other places. We didn’t use the cruise ship to book excursions but we were okay with kind of doing things the bobo way. We took a taxi bus around to the falls though so it was super easy…I think it would depend on the places you are going. I’ve never been to the destinations you are planning, so I’m sorry I can’t be more help.

How nice!!!  I LOVE cruising – been going since I was a kid and we’re doing the same thing for our Honeymoon too!  (I’m tellin ya, its the best thing in the world! IMO)

So, definitely get the balcony.  Its a splurge, you’ll have a good time without it.  But, in my opinion, if you can spend the extra, its definitely worth it.  (especially for the honeymoon!)  Its very romantic in the morning to wake up together and look out to sea.

Also, you may be able to get excursions cheaper at port, but I wouldn’t risk it.  If you stick to the excursions offered by the ship, you’re gauranteed to be given what they offer, if the excursion runs late for any reason – the ship will WAIT FOR YOU (so important!!)  I can’t tell you how many people I’ve seen running up to the ship a LITTLE late just as the ladder is going up, and they CANT put it back down.  Turns out everytime that goes up and down, its a tax or cost for the ship to that island/destination. And, best of all, some have all inclusive excursions that are great … food, drink, and fun provided!

Swimming with the dolphins or snorkeling is always A+++ in that area.  🙂

Hope that helps and I hope you have a blast!!!  Again, to me, its the ultimate vacation!!!! Hope you feel the same!

Mrs.Boom, my FI and I just signed up for that exact cruise only its sails May 27, 2012!! What’s awesome about Carnival too, is that they let us do a payment plan so, we both pay like 64$ a month until March 2012, and we will have the cruise paid off!! And we deiced to go with a balcony, mid ship, with an unobstructed view–and it was like $1,700, which isn’t bad at all for 7 days! And we also signed up for Honeymoon wishes! We signed up for a bottle of wine at dinner, and drinks by the pool, and a couples message. But If we don’t get anything we will prob. still do some of the stuff, since it will be paid off and all by the time we go!!

I have never been on a balcony. It would be nice, but I have found that I don’t want to spring the extra funds for it. Besides, you aren’t in your room that much. Well, for a honeymoon, I guess you will be. 🙂 I have done two cruises with inside cabins and I am okay with it, but it has to be what you want to do.

As for excursions, some places are better to just find someone at the port and then do what you want, but you might want to do a bit of research beforehand. Check out cruisecritic.com and you can get some ideas of some fun things to do while at port. I was at Cozumel on my last cruise and we just hung out at the port area and went into town. I know a lot of people who went to an all inclusive beach for the day and had a blast. A lot of people talk about Stingray City at Grand Cayman where you can play with friendly stingrays. Belize is known for diving and I think you can go see Mayan ruins there as well. As for Isla Roatan, I think it is more like a private island type deal, but I think they have some diving and watersports there.  Just figure out what you want to do and do some research. And remember if you go on your own and are late, the ship will leave without you.
