So I just found out a couple hours ago that the airline has decided to discontinue the route we were on for our honeymoon in Puerto Vallarta! What should we do?

I am assuming that they are refunding your money?  If PV is your dream honeymoon, then find another way to get there.  You have so many options in your part of the country.

Well, we have the option to get a refund on the flight or the whole package.  Part of me thinks we should go somewhere else because it is rainy down in Mexico right now.

Is August rainy season in Mexico?  Or is it just rainy lately?  I think I'd just look for another flight, keep the reservation.  But, it sounds like you'd rather try somewhere else entirely.  See if you can find something comparable and not more expensive.  The caribbean always has deals, I like St. Thomas, Virgin Islands and Turks and Caicos.

Go somewhere else, you'll probably have to pay for more money with another flight this late in the game.

I would have to agree.  With your travel less than a month away, you are going to be paying a lot to rebook the flight and hotel.  Is there somewhere else you have wanted to try?  Sometimes after people make a decision on something that's final, they wish they had chosen something else.  Did this happen to you at all after you booked your trip to Mexico?

    Ouch that really stinks!

I would look at other flights/options and then make your decision.

If you do not have your heart 100% on going there, pick somewhere else.

Are you looking for a relaxing place or an adventure?  Maybe we can suggest some places!

Yes, it is rainy season in Meixco right now and will continue to be during the time we're supposed to be there.  We wanted something affordable, adults only, all-inclusive and away from hurricanes which is why we chose Puerto Vallarta.

Right now i am looking into Barbados and Aruba but I can't find any all-inclusives that would be the same price or cheaper than the package we already bought.  Anyone have leads on where to find good deals?

What kind of budget are you looking for?  If you don't wanna say it here, send me a PM.  I have people I can ask for help.

We spent $2.6K on our Puerto Vallarta trip, and if we change I don't want to spend more money.

It would be a shame to throw out the planning you already did.  I say you should keep the hotel and find an alternate flight if possible.  If you can't, then screw Mexico!  Drive out to the Grand Canyon or something.

We are getting married on the same day as you and heading off to Aruba.  We originally wanted all inclusive, but then really thought about it.  We don't drink enough or eat fancy enough to make it worth it (we usually only wind up eating twice a day on vacation anyways).  So we booked from 8/22 to 8/31 and it was about $1800 (with flights and transport to and from hotel). Maybe something like that would work for you!

I think Mexico would be a lot of fun, but I would be sad to be there while it is raining!

I wouldn't take a chance with a hurricane or rain.  Check out Banff, Alberta, Canada.  It's very pretty (google image search).

Banff is gorgeous, but we are looking for something ocean-side.

Aruba is beautiful, but it doesn't have any all adult, all inclusive resorts.

How about Couples Resorts in Jamaica? Or maybe the Riviera Maya instead? It's absolutely beautiful there. Punta Cana should also have some options that would fit within your budget.

If the airline cancelled your flight they should offer you an alternate or a full refund.

Yes, I'm curious to hear who you booked through as well. Because a few years ago, we booked a trip through Expedia, and our flight got discontinued by the airline. But Expedia made sure that we got booked on a different flight.

Even if you booked through an airline and not an aggregate travel site, they should be able to accomodate your flight somehow, even if it's with a partner airline.

ETA: But you might have to be VERY FIRM with the airline. I spent about 2 hours on the phone before Expedia got us on a flight that didn't have us missing a full day of our vacation.

As far as suggesting alternate locations on which to honeymoon - isn't August hurricane season? I feel like it might be rainy at any of those locales that have been suggested. If that's the case, I'd probably just stick with my first choice.

We booked a trip to PV for our honeymoon through Cheap Caribbean, and leave at the end of September. The Pacific coast is insulated from the hurricane season a little better than the gulf coast. Our flight has changed a number of times, but no cancellations - may be worth looking into CheapCaribbean.com!

The trip was booked through Expedia.  A big part of the reason why we chose our package was the availability of a short, direct flight.  Now with the change they want us to fly to Mexico City (DF), have a retarded layover and then to PV.  I have this gut instinct that maybe this is a sign that we weren't supposed to go to PV.  I feel like one of those brides who goes in to look at more dresses even though she already bought one.

@Bliss Honeymoons:  Sorry we've ruled out the hurricane areas so all those areas are a no-go.

    Hi Date Twin! :)

I am so sorry to hear about your flight! We are going to Aruba (out of Atlanta) but I believe it is sortof their off-season so maybe you could still find something in the price range you're looking for.  I know the Divi and Tamirjin (not spelled right) are sister resorts that we looked into before deciding not to do an all-inclusive.

Good Luck! I'm sure it will work out :)

Renaissance in Aruba is also all adult all inclusive.  It even has a private island to go to!

We decided to go to a hurricane island and buy insurance because it was cheaper than going to one of the ABC islands. Maybe you want to see what other offers you can find and if you can find a better price on an acceptable flight then go somewhere else. I would not rule out the other destinations, you will get more for your money and our insurance was only $120 for both of us.

    Update:

I was able to get another flight booked (on Alaska Airlines, instead of Mexicana) and got a refund from Expedia for the original flight.  Unfortunately we had to pay $160 extra for the last minute change.  I spent an hour on the phone getting the refund and explaining that switching my flight out for one that caused the travel time to DOUBLE was not acceptable, especially when the travel was booked and paid for more than 6 months ago.  I was given a $50 off coupon for future use as my consolation prize.

We decided to save Fiji, Tahiti, Barbados and Aruba for our anniversaries.

Jo Jo if you have the trip insurance, you may be able to claim the change fees. Mexicana went bankrupt.
