chelseakayd:  have you been to the Mayan Riviera? It’s beautiful, and exotic enough for a special honeymoon.

flowercrowns:  I second that! We’re going to Playa del Carmen. FI’s family has been twice and they loved it both times.

I’ll add that when I went, my FI and I did some excursions off the resort while my parents sat by the pools/on the beach with laptops to do work, haha. They never left our resort and had a great time still. Great drinks and good food, which you often don’t get down south at AI places. I can’t remember the resort but I can look it up!

chelseakayd:  We are doing Aruba in July! I’ve never been but I researched the heck out of it, and everyone seems to LOVE IT. It’s very safe and you can go off the resort with no issues.  We chose not to do AI, beacuse the only adults-only resort on the island isn’t – but breakfast is included every day, which is nice! There are also plenty of hotels that are AI that you could look into.

Our airfare cost us $1200 from New Jersey.

I did about 6 months of research before booking our honeymoon. We wanted somewhere warm, AI, with 24-hour room service, adults-only, with good food and relatively small. We chose Sun Palace in Cancun. It’s actually couples-only and adults-only, it’s small (252 rooms I think?) which was important to us because we really just want to relax by the pool for a week. But, you also get access to 4 or 5 other resorts nearby that have a ton of stuff to do (includig parasailing, which FI has always wanted to try!). You also don’t have to make dinner reservations in advance which you have to do at a lot of larger resorts. We haven’t gone yet but I check the Trip Advisor reviews once a week or so. TA is your friend – read the reviews! That was the single biggest help for me when researching. Because we’re going in the middle of June (wedding is 6 weeks from Saturday), we got a pretty decent deal – $2900 all in, flying from Toronto. Good luck! I was really indecisive and it took me forever to decide on a place.

I would NOT recommend Aruba (there are actually a few recent forums discussing this).

I didn’t find the island safe, the beaches are crowded and nasty, food is terrible (and expensive) and overall the island is just not very nice.

Just curious what you’ve heard about Jamaica.  We are actually headed there later this year….

GG_Vega:  Can I ask where you heard this information? I did a ton of research and talked to friends who have been there and they all said its totally safe (obviously use your brains just like you would anywhere)…also that the food is awesome so you shouldnt do all inclusive and that the people are very nice.

Can you link me to the recent forums? I would love to read them.

It is my first hand experience from vacationing there.

We rented a “Jeep” to tour the island and got lost heading back to the resort.  We stopped to asked some locals how to get back to the hotel and they pointed us in the very opposite direction to a very dangerous/secluded part of the island. Luckily, we found our way back…

Also, we were contantly asked by the locals if we wanted to buy drugs.  And even when we ignored them or told them NO, they would follow us around.  After that – we made sure we were back to the hotel before dark.

Lastly, I found the service to be awful every where we went.  The typical “you need me more than I need you” attitude.

We are pretty avid travelers, and in my opinion there are just so many nicer places to travel and vacation.

The forums where here on WeddingBee, so you may have to do some searching.  Here is one that I responded:

After doing a ton of research we decided on Playa Mujeres Mexico! Specifically the Excellence Playa Mujeres. It’s north of Cancun in a bit of an ‘up and coming’ resort area in Mexico. Excellence seemed to really have everything we were looking for for a relaxing and sun-filled Honeymoon!

Here’s the TripAdvisor page for the resort!
