Hello there bees, I’m just starting out with the planning and then I saw a commercial for Sandals… so of course I started looking and dreaming lol but most of those places are expensive! Which then got me thinking… do we want to spend all this money to go to a place that we will probably never see the surrounding area? (or maybe not even see the outside of the room) 😉 lol what are you bees thinking?

@annasaf83: we are doing sandals grande in St. lucia. We have heard great great things and have heard there are awesome things to do outside of the resort. If you keep an eye out, they do run great offers. We got ours for 55% off plus some free excursions and. A free beach candlelit dinner.

@annasaf83: we booked our honeymoon to Sandals Emerald Bay in the Bahamas. One of the things I loved about Sandals is that it is all inclusive including alcohol and a lot of their watersports are included too! FI and I are considering getting certified for scuba diving because if you are certified scuba diving is free! Check out trip advisor!

We are doing Couples Swept Away. It was $3500 for a week. Only have a honeymoon once! 🙂

If you choose a Caribbean Destination (be it an AI or Hotel you book on your own) that is a relatively safe place… based on economics & political situation, you can easily enjoy the best of BOTH worlds. Life on the resort with life off the compound, easily & safely on your own without too many cares.
You’ll find that when it comes to Caribbean Vacations that the most expensive places are generally gonna be found due to a combo of airfare costs (not cheap)… and the cost of the AI / Resort.
The cheapest AIs tend to be on the most issue prone Destinations… (due to politics or economics)… so not always the best places to explore on your own or in some cases even leave the compound.
Some of my personal favourite islands are… The Bahamas, Bermuda, Barbados, St Lucia, Antigua and Sint Maarten / Saint Martin.
St Thomas and Puerto Rico are also nice (although BOTH have some issues with safety particularly after dark)
All of these islands are quite developed, and therefore also offer tons to do… and some of them like Barbados, so developed, that there is almost NO AIs (they don’t need them to attract tourists)
Next up for us… Cuba, Grand Cayman and possibly a cruise to the Southern Caribbean and the ABC Islands.
Islands I am yet to explore and would LOVE to see… but as they have a very secure economy are quite expensive are… the British Virgin Islands.
Hope this helps,
PS… And YES many great Honeymoon choices are expensive… but quite honestly that is because they ARE SOOO WORTH IT. Honeymoons are fantastic… splurge, you don’t know how great this is till you do it, and besides you don’t know how long it will be again to you get to go on such an amazing vacation as a couple !!

Thanks ladies, I’m just kinda worried that we’ll spend alot of money to go to a place we’ll never get back to and while we’re there we’ll be holed up in the room or lounging by the pool and therefore we won’t have really ‘seen’ the area. You know?

TO @annasaf83: Re – Your Reply # 6
In that case look at the Islands that have a better economic / policitical situation = safety.
IF you are insistent on the AI experience…
Beaches… the Sandals Family Brand are located on Turks & Caicos (in addition to Jamaica)
There are also many smaller brands of AIs on some of the safer islands I mentioned before… some for Families some for Couples Only.
Take a look at the WBee Blog, and the BEE Mrs. Beanstalk… she spent her Honeymoon in St Lucia at the Jalhousie Plantation / Sugar Bay Resort… and she had an amazing time… and the resort looks awesome (we went snorkelling on their Beach on our own Honeymoon Cruise back in January)
When it comes to Adults ONLY…
There are Sandals on St Lucia – Antigua – and The Bahamas (in addition to Jamaica)
Couples just opened a resort on Barbados (in addition to Jamaica)
Islands that are safe mean that you won’t have to worry a lot about leaving the resort to take in the sights or do activities… and organizing them on your own will be much cheaper than as a Resort Excursion (check TripAdvisor OR Cruise Critic for help / TIPS )
BUT if you are on Islands that aren’t as safe, then you’ll want to stick with the Resort Organized / Escorted Excursions
Hope this helps,
PS… You can always PM if you are still overwhelmed / looking for advice / help… and we can talk more fully about my experiences and what might work for you
