In March, a lot of places in Northern CA will still be cold and most likely raining.  It will probably be too cold to camp.  As for hiking, that is always an option.  The Monterey/Carmel area is amazing and would  be a great trip.  It is probably one of the more expensive coastal areas.

Some of my favorite coastal get aways in CA are:

Mendocino – this is northern CA coast.  There are a ton of cute B&B’s and a lot of hiking.  Also, there is some wine tasting near by.  It is a lot cheaper than Monterey/Carmel.

Halfmoon Bay/Pacifica – These are just south of San Francisco and are cute little surf towns.  If you go here, it is convenient to the SF airport and you could spend time in SF, which is always fun.

Santa Cruz  – this is between Halfmoon Bay and Monterey.  Cute little coastal town.  totally laid back.  There are a ton of hikes around.

San Luis Obispo Area – I went to college here and love it around here.  There are a ton of cute little beach towns around here – such as Pismo Beach, Morro Bay, or Cambria.  San Luis itself is a college town, with a great downtown.  There is a ton of hiking and outdoors.  This is on the central coast and a little harder to get to – it is about 3 hours or so south of San Francisco.  Out of all of the places I listed, this will most likely be the warmest since it is the farthest south.  it still gets a fog layer, but not as bad as up north.

Hopefully this helps a little.  There are really a lot of places you could go.  You might also want to consider taking a road trip down the coast.  it is an amazing drive.

I’m from Northern Ca….I think you should opt for San Diego..it will be warmer there:)

However if you choose Monterey area, you can rent a Beach House for not that much for like a whole week…..right on the beachfront, at places like Monterey Dunes(outside of monterey in Moss Landing) or Pajaro Dunes…… You could also go to the aquarium in Monterey….you could hit the Santa Cruz Boardwalk, and you can do some winetasting in Santa cruz mountains….

Also, the Tickle Pink Inn, a bed and breakfast is great in Carmel..I might book it for the night of my wedding! You an even get a hottub in your room, a free box of chocolates/champagne, free wine and cheese, etc….well worth the money.
