My fiance and I have bounced around the idea of not doing a honeymoon because of all we have spent on the wedding, but the more I’ve thought about it, the more I realize how much I’ve always dreamed of taking a honeymoon with my new husband and how disappointed I really will be if we don’t go on one.
I’m not talking a big lavish tour of Europe or anything super grand and expensive, but I do want to go SOMEWHERE with him (preferably warm since it is 15 degrees here at the moment). He is stressed right now with work and I am working, going to school, and interning and it would be so amazing to take a vacation together after our April wedding.
My question for you ladies is, can you recommend anything or anywhere we could travel to that isn’t crazy expensive? We have a budget of roughly $2,000. We are leaning toward something all inclusive because we both love to eat and I LOVES me some fruity frozen drinks. I’ve looked around and found some resorts in the Bahamas and Mexico that we could potentially do but am open to ANY and ALL suggestions!! Basically I want to get on a plane and not be freezing to death for 5-7 days if possible.

I am in the same boat with you!! It is -3 degrees here today!! We just booked our honeymoon! We are going to the El Dorado Royale in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. We are staying for 6 days. This one is a little more expensive than you want to spend but while I was looking I saw quite a few all inclusive resorts that would come in at your budget!! We chose the El Dorado because my Brother and his Wife spent their honeymoon there and said it was amazing! I can’t wait to be on the beach in 80 degree weather!!

a cruise is usually more affordable than a resort
especially if you live close enough to drive to the port

Yes i was going to say a Cruise is what we will be doing also.

Unfortunately there aren’t many ports around Indianapolis, but we would be willing to travel to one if the cruise was worth it.

My FI and I went to Bermuda last spring (he proposed there) and we got super cheap flights there (less then $200 person from Toronto). Perhaps that could be an option? The island is really super pretty!

This idea probably won’t help you as you want to get on a plane, so I assume you want to go somewhere far away, but me & my fi will be going to Sybaris as part of our honeymoon. [www.sybaris.com] It would be within your budget, but it is not far away, nor all incusive, they do have rooms with private heated pools though. This is what sold us!

@hlayers: I echo others when I say…take a cruise! It’s warm, and all of your food is included. I’ve been on two (still deciding if I really like them, though – I’m not one for sitting around on vacation), and I’ve felt like 7 days gets to be a little long. Plus, drinks are not included.
So, I’d suggest a 5-day Caribbean cruise, and save around $500 of your budget for those frozen, fruity drinks, excursions (OK, save more than $500 if you want to do more than one, and don’t book them on the ship – they cost WAY more!), specialty dining, souveniers, and transfers to and from the airport! 🙂

Glad you both decided to go on a moon!
Have you thought about Puerto Rico? Flights are generally more affordable than the other islands. And all inclusive is not so prevalent there, which really makes the trip more economical. Old San Juan is really beautiful.
Also, perhaps Key West? I have never been , but have heard wonderful things. You could fly down to Miami and rent a car- the drive down to the Keys is supposed to be gorgeous!

@mmle: +1 on Puerto Rico. My cousin and her boyfriend went and had nothing but good things to say! 🙂

As someone that went international on their honeymoon I can say that I LOVED it!! The only thing that almost killed both of us was getting there and getting home….if your budget allows, it’s awesome to have a tropical getaway!
I also would have loved to just head up to some sleepy mountain town, settle into a cozy love nest and whittle the week away getting used to the idea of being a Mr. and Mrs…shopping and eating in those little nooky restaurants that only exist in towns with a population under 150….is there something within driving distance that you could cruise to and settle into for the week?

Girl…I got ya!
Book a cruise on Carnival in late April/early May. They are priced seasonally so Spring Break and Summer/holidays are peak times. OR book during Sept/Oct/Nov. Since it’s still hurricane season, prices are good. Don’t let the “hurricane season” scare you. If there’s a bad storm, your ship will most likely just redirect (ie switch from an E. Carribean to a Western itinerary). If you are in Indy, your drivable ports are New Orleans, Charleston and maybe Jacksonville. If you drive, come in the night before and get a park/sleep/cruise package to cut parking costs; they will shuttle you to port/back. Look at booking the older ships (most have had significant upgrades in the past two years and are meticulously maintained), avoid the newer mega-ships, book an interior (the cheapest room) and you can absolutely have a week in the Carribean under $2k. If you can afford to fly to any of the major ports, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale or Orlando (Port Canaveral), you’ll have even more options and can just do a fly/park/cruise hotel. You can find port specific info and info on how to save on drinks (they are expensive onboard)/account charges on cruisecritic.com. Ooh..Budget $11-day per person for the automatic gratuities too.
Feel free to pm me if you’d like. Our family vacations on the cheap 🙂 Good luck!

Yup! We did a week in Puerto Rico for $1800, including TONS of great food and drink! Beautiful beaches, awesome sights, nice people, etc.

I’m from Evansville, IN so I feel I can give some decent advice on the subject. Look into all inclusives in Mexico. Flying out of Indy was slightly cheaper than Eville and I think a lot of AI’s there are within your budget depending on when you go. We are going to Couples Swept Away (Jamaica) in July, flying out of Evansville for $3500 if that gives you a frame of reference on pricing. I looked into cruises but by the time we would pay for flights to port of call, a hotel for the night before boarding the ship, etc, this was cheaper. Also if you don’t desperately want Caribbean, look into Vegas. Owensboro KY often has flights there for $99/person. (Owensboro is about 30-45 minutes away from Evansville). Let me know if I can help out any more. I priced everywhere I looked out of Eville, Indy and Louisville.
