@E.Marie:You won’t need a car to explore downtown Honolulu,  but I highly recommend renting one if you would like to get out to Hanauma Bay and Pearl Harbor and North Shore (please please please go to Romy’s Shrimp Truck. It’s amazing). The Polynesian Cultural Center has a shuttle bus that will pick you up in Waikiki – then it’s roughly an 1 1/2 – 2 hour ride depending on traffic to the cultural center. Depending on where you are staying, Diamond Head is accessible by bus from downtown Waikiki, but it’s a 20 minute walk up to the crater as the bus doesn’t go all the way into the park.

The Big Island will definitely require a rental car as there isn’t an extensive public transportation system at the moment. One is in the works, but I’m not sure how far they’ve gotten. Be forewarned though, most rental companies won’t allow you to bring the rental car to certain parts of the Big Island (portions of volcano national park, Mauna Kea, and certain  beaches).

Hope this helps! If you have any more questions feel free to PM me!
