sbruin99:  Do you want all inclusive? If not a good place to check out in the carribbean that is pretty budget friendly is Costa Rica. Everthing is relatively cheap there and flights are not terrible if you book early. There are a lot of places to explore (that does not involve just laying on the beach). My friend went there for 7 days and spent a little under 1200$ including flights.

Keep checking around, you will find something. 🙂

sbruin99:  Do you want to go abroad? Do you mind if the weather is cold? There are lots of neat places to see in the US, if you’re up for that.

I’m not sure where you could go for almost two weeks within a $4000 budget. Perhaps you could try Hawai’i but not stay as long.. you have beaches, but you also have plenty of other stuff to go do and see.

sbruin99:  I also probably should have mentioned Thailand. The flights can cost around $1k to get there, but once you get there I’ve heard it’s pretty cheap. There is so much culture and beauty there, plus beaches. My friends went recently and got a luxurious hotel for around $70/night. A plate of Pad Thai  is supposed to be around $0.50.

They are in a coup right now due to civil unrest in the Bankok areas. However, the US government isn’t particular advising against travel there- they are just warning of areas to avoid.

DH is not a beach person at all and I could do a beach vacation for a weekend but not an entire week.

We went to Italy for 2 weeks.  It was $2700/person for airfare, hotels, and train from city city city.  And we spent another $1000/person on food, museums, entertainment, etc.

I know your budget is only $4000, but maybe you are looking at a shorter time.

Groupon also had great vacation deals.

sbruin99:  we booked through europeandestinations.com.  it was a great site to work with.

we priced it out with a travel agent as well and the travel agent was 3x as much.

Belize. I love, love, love Belize. The excursions were wonderful… things you would never, ever get to see or do back home. The snorkeling was amazing. The people were amazing… they wanted you to have a good time and were not there to take your money. Our guides took us deep into the Mayan caves. We spent half of our time in the rainforest and the other half on the beach. I loved waking up to monkeys on our front porch. We spent maybe $4500 on that trip, I forget.

Costa Rica is somewhat like Belize. We did the same thing here as in Belize… half in the rainforest, half on the beach. I hated the snorkeling in CR. I felt like the people were there to take our money. We spent about $4500 on that trip as well.

Have you thought about a cruise in the Caribbean? While on the ship, all your food is included, but drinks are extra, so that should work with your priorities 🙂 You’ll wake up every morning in a new place to explore and can relax by the pool while on the ship. You can definitely do a 10-14 day cruise on your budget (if you don’t mind a room without a view), though I don’t know how much flights are from Canada.

sbruin99:  This sounds like our honeymoon wish list too!  We originally wanted Hawaii but the flights blew our budget.  We would have done Costa Rica in a heart beat if October wasn’t their rainy season.  We finally settled on Negril, Jamaica.  Our budget, including flights is $5000 and we are staying for 9 nights/10 days.  Jamaica was not even on my radar until a travel agent suggested it.  We are staying at an all inclusive but they offer a ton of excursions as well (we are not lounge on the beach people either…) like horseback riding, ATV type tours, zip lining, etc.

Choosing a place to honeymoon was the most difficult part for us!  Good luck!

sbruin99:  if you’re in canada why not go to Cuba.  My fi has been there twice and loved it. He stayed in varadero and went to Havana as well.  Florida, Vegas or California would be fun too. We’re going to Florida and driving to the keys.
