hahaha, this made me laugh! I have been obsessing about how dry my hands and cuticles are lately. During cold canadian winters my skin and hair are in trouble! I have been keeping my nails filed and a tiny bit longer than they usually are, usually just a clear polish. My main focus is hydration!
I'm anticipating a holiday proposal as well, and I've been taking extra care to make my nails looks nice even though I rarely paint them.
I bought some of that pretty, pale pink nail polish too but I always seem to run into the same problem when I paint my nails. My nails REFUSE to hold polish. Base coat, two coats of polish, top coat, expensive polish...doesn't matter. Every polish I have ever tried chips off my nails in no time at all. Grrrrrr. I've tried to paint them in the pail pink and make them look nice, but it just chips off and looks weird.
I'll probably just settle for a clear coat to keep them shiny and trim my cuticles after the shower. So annoying!!!
Also, I'm a northern gal like yourselves and my hands are in good shape! I'm using a really fantastic lotion by "Naked." It's kinda spendy, but a little goes a long way and it's TOTALLY worth it!
I love this! I normally keep my nails in good shape with weekly manicures. But lately, I've fallen off the wagon, so to speak. MY nails are a MESS!
I don't think I'll be getting engaged this holiday season, but still...it's nice to be "ring ready!!"
My fave polish is Essie Mademoiselle for my fingernails, and Essie Scarlett for my toes.
To all the other waiting bees: Go do those nails!!!
:-)
I usually keep my nails done-a pink and white-but I've fell off the wagon. My nails are horrible looking. I feel like I'm revolting since I don't feel a proposal coming.LOL
Maybe I'll get back on the wagon in 2011.
I was doing good for a few weeks there. I'm a nail biter, so nails of any kind are pretty much a miracle. But alas, they are all gone and looking HORRID now. I will be making an immediate stop at my favorite nail salon for some pink and white babies to show anything off.
Luckily though, I highly doubt a holidays proposal. Although, SO has been sneaking quite a few peeks while I'm on here, even commenting unprovoked on the pictures in the "bling".... I mean "ring" section.
Heck, last night for some reason I was on a jewelry website and it had one of those "smart value" diamonds, a full carat for $1999.99, and he goes "I like that one" and "that's a really good deal". I was a little taken back as he's kind of frugal. I didn't expect him to think $2K was a good deal! I was thinking $1500 or less out of him. Was a nice surprise :) No holding my breath though. He pointed out a gorgeous three stone 6 months ago and lingered at the engagement section when I was dropping off my promise ring and still no proposal.
lol the last few weeks leading up to proposal I was doing my nails everyday!
They have never been so healthy. I started to push my cuticles back and use a lotion that helps them. Then I started to paint them with Sally Hensen Diamond Shine? Nail color in Blush. If I keep it up, I won't have to get fake nails for wedding nail photos.
Seriously, keep your nails looking great. Because after you get that ring on your finger you are going to be posting photos and everyone is going to want to see your ring up close. You do not want hot mess of nails staring back at someone!
*Oh, and I have one of those 3 sided file/buffer/shine things that I use once a week!*
sleepingbeaty88- Someone else who loves pink and white! My little (17yr old) cousin got me hooked on that.LOL
Boyfriend keeps teasing me, that he's just going to start telling me to get my nails done. "oh how about going out for dinner, maybe you want to get your nails done?"... "remember we're going to the nutcracker tonight... are you going to the nail salon beforehand?". I know a holiday proposal is not in the works (we have appointments at a couple of local jewlers on Dec 28th). So I'll take a couple more weeks spending the cash on wine instead of manicures ;)
BUT I'm wishing the best for you ladies that have that possibility!!!
Glad I'm not the only one who's nail obsessed!
My cuticles are a hot mess right now - My mom suggested I use something called solar oil on them - she uses it to moisturize. I've not done it as much as I should because, surprise surprise, it leaves your hands rather oily - which makes it hard to do things (...like type responses on weddingbee...) I need to step up my moisturizing!
I am visiting FH in Vancouver right now - on my winter break from school. I polished my nails before I left, and they are already getting all chipped and gross. I didn't bring any nail polish remover with me - gonna need to pick some up this weekend.
I figure the proposal isn't going to happen until we are with his family for the holidays, so I've got some time to get my self ring-ready!
@Miss Tattoo: Your nails look amazing! I totally need to get one of those three sided things!
Just because this thread was on my mind, I went and got a manicure before my run tonight. Helps them dry as I run around the track. :-)
hahaha this is awesome, there I was thinking I'm a total freak for obsessing over my nails "just in case"! I've gone with the pale pink too, but will probably get a manicure with french polish in time for christmas... I keep feeling like I'll jinx it if I'm all prepared and expecting it though!! Fun =)
Ohh geeze I am glad I am not the only one worried about my nails. For the past few months I have been doing my own acryllics. I ran out of white tips so I decided to take them off and now I am wearing a cobalt blue I bought at sephora, I don't know the name.
I also have a problem with dry skin, but luckily it is only on my left hand the hand that I use to wash dishes with. Every single winter this happens to me, it is so annyoing. Has anyone ever used that Dawn soap with the Olay in it? If so, does it help?
Thanks for the reminder. As of last night I have a really strong feeling there maaaay be a holiday proposal, so I guess it's time to get out the nail polish! Even if it doesn't happen yet, who doesn't like pretty nails?!
@LetsGoPens: We actually use the Dawn dish soap with the hand-protector stuff in it and it works pretty darn well! I swear my hands are softer after I'm done doing dishes than they are before I start. That's a difficult thing to manage up here in the Northern Tundra. The high temp this Sunday is supposed to be ZERO degrees with windchills in the -20 to -30 range. Great.
LOL I'm thinking my proposal may be next week! And my nails are NOT ready! I've been trying but this Pittsburgh cold weather is killing me!! I'm going to have to find some magic in a bottle to save mine as fast as I might need it! lol
I'm using Aveeno Intense Relief Hand Cream. It doesn't wash off through hand washing and I only have to put it on once a day. My Dermatologist actually recommended it because we all know how dry the winter is here in Pittsburgh.
I'm using Aveeno too! The 24hour stuff. And for doing dishes, I wear rubber gloves. And before bed, I use baby oil on my hands. I don't feel like any of this is really working tho, I STILL have dry hands. >:(
That Aveeno stuff sounds great! I will have to look for it this weekend.
I've come down with some sort of winter illness (always happens to me when i travel this time of year) so as I lay around feeling like crap today, I'm going to at least attempt to stay moisturized!
I had a feeling a proposal was coming over my birthday weekend so I went and get a manicure just in case and told him it was an early birthday treat to myself. Well I'm glad I did because he ended up proposing to me the next day on my actual birthday and I got to go home and show off my ring to all my friends and family :)
I am one that always gets my nails done so this isn't anything new to me. However, I am extra cautious as to how my nails look and have been making it a point to keep them looking good.
Two and 1/2 weeks ago I went and got them done and tried the new Gel paint on my nails over the acrylic! I LOVE IT!!! I only wish there were so many more colors available. Not many places have it and it's hard to find. NO it's NOT the same as the gel that goes over any color of polish you have to secure the color longer, it's actually gel nail color so it goes on and dries so much quicker and my nails haven't chipped and they still look like I just went and had them done except for the fact you can see where I need a fill done. It's new and a lot of people don't know about it or have it. Some salons look at you weird when you ask about it.
I am also having to moisturize like crazy because my hands/skin has been so dry. I hate the winter.
When I found out SO bought the ring, I bought a whole bunch of OPI nailpolish from the soft shades collection. I have been trialing the colours I bought to find the perect 'proposal polish' :)
hahaha, I've had this exact obsession lately!! :) So funny you brought this up, I was just talking about this with my mom today!
Ah - I forgot about this - I have pretty fair skin and dark hair, so even though my fingers aren't "hairy" so to speak, I noticed when I was looking at my hand I saw some of the little hairs there. I figured they would be visible so I got a home waxing kit and took 'em right off!
@dreamingofbling: Which shades are you liking? I want to try Samoan Sand and Mimosas for Mr. and Mrs. They have such nice shades! I got a manicure with Panda-monium and it was waaay too lavender for my skin tone. I'm liking Sweet Memories a lot though.
Me too!! I've been trying to keep my nails in good condition. Unfortunately, last week when I was babysitting, I caught my left middle finger on something and it broke the whole thing off! I had to cut them all super short so it wouldn't look weird. I'm still focusing on keeping them nicely filed and the cuticles trimmed, though :-) I actually painted them tonight, a sparkley festive red shade (OPI The Show Must Go On). I think I'm going to take stuff with me for french manicures when we go down to Florida over Christmas and New Years.
There's no hope for me-- so I'm just going to get acryllics. :)
I'm getting a black diamond-- should I do french-tip or bright red?
Hahaha I totally did this! Well I'm engaged now but a few months before I was my mom told me to start taking better care of my nails. Right now I'm using a clear extra strength polish to let the grow, but ow you've put me in the mood to try on a light pink.
I had to comment on this thread purely b/c of the title. Love it!
I have no idea when I'll be proposed too. My nails are manicured about 60% of the time. Hopefully he notices and proposes when they look good!
@MrsCarnival: Have you tried gel polish? I think you have to go to a salon to get it, but I was having the same prob. till I started getting it. It stays on super well!
Anyways, I went out and got mine done today. I have the feeling its coming soon!

So Bees, ever since I found out that a holiday proposal may be in the works for me, I have been super preoccupied with my nails! I know it may seem silly, but I am trying to keep my nails in extra good condition so that in the event something exciting happens, I'll have nice looking nails to show off with a ring. I enjoy having polished nails in general, but this seems like some fun extra incentive!
Right now I am sporting a very pale pink by O.P.I called Sweet Memories. It gives a nice, natural, barely pink look. I'm in trouble though with this dry winter weather - I have to moisturize!
Are any of you other waiting ladies working on your nails? What color are you sporting?
