Prettysmile40:  I used to work as a seamstress and still tailor all my own clothes, so I hope I can help! Formalwear tends to have wide enough seam allowances to allow it to be taken out an inch or two. If not, it would be easy enough to take the snaps off of the dress and add a corset-style back to give you a little extra room.

Did they measure you?  If they measured you and made a suggestion for a smaller size I would hold them accountable.  Never have I seen a place that has told me to order down.  They took actual measurements and then ordered that size or slightly larger. This sounds like one of their representatives gave you bad advice.  I would see if they would be willing to order you the correct size.

Prettysmile40:  I ordered my dress at DB.  I was between a 10 and a 16 depending on the measurement.  We ordered a 12.  Not a problem at all to let it out almost an inch on each side to accomodate my hips.  Those alterations ladies know what they’re doing.  (we did have alterations come out to make sure before I ordered).

I ordered a preowned dress that was too small and had it let out, but it was lace over charmeuse.  When just letting it out a bit wasn’t enough the seamstress was able to add a few inches of the charmeuse to each side (the lace overlay was big enough, thankfully).  What kind of dress is it?  That will really determine if it can be let out or not.  If I were in your shoes I would be demanding they order the dress in a 12 though!
