We recently purchased a house. I'm more of an artsy person, and I was excited to make our house bright and fun. The house is white and we painted the trim yellow and green, and while I admit it is pretty bright, I still love it. Our neighbors... I guess not so much. The HOA (we called them before we painted and they OKed the colors) called and said they've had a complaint from one of the neighbors. They can't tell us to change it, but they wanted to let us know.

We aren't even moved in yet and we have neighbors complaining about us! So what do you think, repaint (which means spending more money on paint and someone to paint it, and I wouldn't be as happy with the colors) to please the neighbors or keep the colors I love and say screw the neighbors?

Its your choice but if resale value is a factor to you then I would consider it. I will admit, there are homes in a town not too far from us that I wonder WTH were they thinking when painting their home? Really, one house is violet, there is one that is bright pink. I am sorry, it does make these homes stick out and not in a good way. While I don't think it would bother me enough to complain, it may bother me enough to ever buy in that area and I think that maybe why some are upset.

Do you have pictures that show the colors? I'd love to see to answer honestly whether or not I'd repaint.

I'd love to see pictures because I love bright colors as well.  Anyways, it's your decision/house.  I've seen some crazy/wacky house colors and shutters (pink house with purple shutters).  Talk about unpleasing, but hey, whatever floats their boat.

I would also love to see photos to see what it looks like, but I think the fact that you kept the house white and it is just the trim that is colorful that they don't really have much to complain about.

I think it is far worse if people leave their front lawns to be dumping grounds for rubbish or don't mow their lawns and leave it to be overgrown, rather than the colors on the house.   I think leave it!

I also would never complain to an HOA but houses that are painted as you say more "artsy" are sore thumbs and people tend to stay away from them when looking to buy. I am torn on what I would do. On one hand I say screw them they prob have nothing else going on in their life and need to complain. But on the other hand as a homeowner I wouldn't want to move into a house where someone has already judged me and complained, silly I know, but I have had crappy neighbors before and it sucked big time. So I would prob leave the outside of my house pretty neutral and keep my artsy ideas for the inside for me to enjoy. But to each their own.

If you like the color of your house, then no, don't repaint it. With that said, if you paint your house colors that could be considered unusual, then be prepaired for your neighbors to dissapprove.

As long as the HOA approved I would say screw em'. It sounds like your new neighbors are just boring. I would, however, be aware that when it comes time to sell the house it may be worth repainting. I think the colors sound nifty but not everybody else may think the same.

Also, be nice to the new neighbors who move in. Share your fun personality with them and maybe they won't think it's so bad. It's very easy to judge people you don't know and my guess is that the folks who complained about the color choice were just itching to complain about something.

I don't have a picture of the house yet, but here are the colors. The green is just around the windows, and the yellow is the trim. Like I said, the majority of the house is white.

We aren't planning on moving any time soon.... I would actually like this to be our one and only home. My parents have lived in their house for over 30 years and I'm hoping to do the same, so I'm not too worried about reselling. And the paint is brand new, I'm assuming it will fade over the years.

I think my problem is that I can't decide if I want to make my neighbors happy since I'm new to the neighborhood, or if I don't really want to be friends with people who care that much about a color of a house to complain about it anyway so who cares. I think I'm leaning toward the latter.

FYI, the house across the street from us is salmon (and we know they also got in trouble for painting it that color, maybe we should be friends with them!), and there's also a bright orange house on our street. The whole house, not just the trim.

    Omg.

So I'm invisioning Lemon & Lime paint. You're colorus are totally fine. The neighbours will get used to it with time. You have to remember some people just don't deal well with change.

Our neighbours have lived here for 30 years and got really upset when we started re-doing the landscape -telling me the plants we picked are inapropriate or will get too big (because clearly the bushes that were there were not over grown at all). They also complainted when we painted our house because they felt the navy blue clashed with the red...whatever.

@kermie: Wow, people are crazy! It makes me feel better to know that I'm not the only one going through this. I think it doesn't help that I'm 7 1/2 months preggo so 1) I'm over emotional right now and 2) I just don't give a damn about the small stuff. I'm popping out a baby soon, I have enough to worry about!

I think its fine and you should keep it. However, theres nothing worse than annoying neighbours.. so sometimes i would tread on caution. If they seem like the nieghbour that is going to be a pain in the whatsit for the next twenty years. I would paint again. keep the peace.

Don't repaint, I'm sure it's just a neighbor with too much time on their hands and it's not even that you used rediculous colors. Growing up my brother had a friend who lived in a lilac house (his mom also drove a purple pickup truck), this was painted as soon as she wanted to sell the house because she knew it was her taste and not everyone elsse's. Your colors are so minor and as accents, I don't think you need to worry about anyone being upset for long and if they are, chances are you wouldn't have much in common anyway.

Thanks for all of you opinions ladies! It makes me feel a lot better about keeping our colors. I have another question though. We haven't painted the door yet, we were planning on doing it green to match, but we feel like it will just be better to do it neutral so we don't cause any more trouble. Any ideas on colors that would go well with the green and yellow, but not stand out too much?

Those colors are muted and light! I voted to not repaint. If HOA doesn't make you change it, then screw them! You can't please everyone, so just please yourselves.

BTW, I think your colors are lovely Smile

I'm with some of the previous posts, when you said that people complained about the colors, I was expecting something like neon green and electric yellow.  Your colors are very cute and you shouldn't repaint.  I'm sure your house looks beautiful with a white base and the green and yellow accents.  I can't figure out what they are complaining about.  Did the HOA say how many people talked to them?  My guess would be that it's only one or two people who think that every house should be some shade of tan and should all look alike.

Keep your colors as-is and go about meeting your neighbors and getting to know everyone as though you hadn't heard anything about your paint.  Within a month, you'll have a block full of new friends and they might even tell you who it is that complains about paint.  It's probably the same person that complains about shrub height, front yard flower color, and kids drawing on the sidewalk with chalk.

@Anne9091: In our neighbor's defense, the colors do look brighter on the house. My fault for not getting a sample and trying it out first, but it's not like I painted the whole house purple with pink dots. It's just yellow and green trim. One person complained, but it was just 2 days after we painted so there's plenty of time for more.

Who would complain about kids drawing using side walk chalk? Our neighbors do it now and I love it, it's always a fun surprise to walk outside to!

These people are probably used to boring, bland, cookie cutter housing developments where the entire paint palette is in the beige color family.

Feel sorry for the people who were so challenged by some thoughtful, out of the box, paint selection that they had to complain to the HOA. It's probably ONE person who is the neighborhood nut, calling people in the moment their grass grows over the sanctioned length.

BTW, one of the coolest, most affluent neighborhoods where I used to live was full of traditionally painted victorian homes.  The colors are awesome.  PBS's This Old House has been in the area, too.  They are multi-million dollar homes...

@Jeannine @ Small Chic: omg!  I know exactly where that is.   I use to live about 5 minutes from there.

I wouldnt change the colors unless they want to pay for the paint.  If you're worried about resale, at worse, repaint it back to 'normal' colors before you try to sell... but for now, I say enjoy your new colors!

Enjoy your colors. Some of the most beautiful homes in the world on Martha's Vineyard (my favorite) and Key West are wild colors! If I ever buy a home it will likely be violet with lime green shutters and we will throw a Hawaiian luau block party every year. If people don't like it, they don't have to look!

I can't resist adding a picture from one of the most famous streets in the world.  Here are some pantied ladies in San Francisco.

If you can't tell, I LOVE it when people paint victorians in historically accurate colors. :)

From wiki:"As one newspaper critic noted in 1885, '...red, yellow, chocolate, orange, everything that is loud is in fashion...if the upper stories are not of red or blue... they are painted up into uncouth panels of yellow and brown...'"
