Are you doing a list or are you having something they actually pick up with their table number on it? If you are doing a list I have most often seen it listed by table. It can take a bit of time because people need to find their names, but it works! Another way would be to list people alphabetically and then list the table number next to their name.
I think we'll do it list style. There's nothing for them to pick up. I'm going to have place cards and favors already on the tables.
Alphabetically would work but how do you group couples who aren't married? Whose last name do you use?
That's where I'm confused...
And how do you do it and still make it look nice? I don't really want just a plain piece of paper taped to the door...
I am going to do the list when people enter the reception then have name cards at the table. But thinking of it now I don't know if name cards at the table are necessary since it's only 8 people at a table I would hope they could figure it out but maybe I'm wrong...
I think it's still good to have place cards... then they know for sure that they're in the right spot (no confusion).
I am planning on having the cards on a table as they walk into the reception, alphabetized and marked by group. (A =Anderson, Anthony, etc) Their table number will be on the card.
For unmarried couples I am using each person's last name.
We'll be doing escort cards that they will take to their table. It will have their name, table number, and table name. which matches what will be on the table.
We're doing what CurlyQ recommends; displayed alphabetically. This way, they go look for their name under "S" for Smith (for ex) and then see their table #. If you display it by table #, people are going to be scanning all the table #'s, be trying to find their name.
You can do the list and then place them on a fabric message board (easy to make your own: http://www.hgtv.com/decorating/fabric-covered-message-board/index.html) which you can create to match your colors/decor. This way it will look nice displayed - not taped to the wall/door! You can place the list on pretty colored card stock which is easy to do on your own computer.
Another option: We are having a table placed near the entrance of the reception. On the table will be different styled frames (all in black) w/ wedding photos of aunt/uncles/cousins/parents, etc). On either side of the table will be tree branches placed in clear vases. Hanging from the tree branches will be fall leaves (our date is in October) w/ each guest's name and table number.
Check this site out to give you an idea for the list format. Hope it helps!http://www.documentsanddesigns.com/index_pages/seating_chart_index.htm

It's pretty easy to figure who is going to sit where, which table, put place cards in front of everyones spot. BUT how do you display this at the door so people know which table to go to?
Do you just put a big list like this? Or is there other ways to do it?
Table 1
Bob and Wilma
George and Linda
Joe and Cindy
Table 2
Dustin & Celine
Kevin & Allison
