So I just read this article about a woman who gave birth to a 13 pound, 13 ounce baby naturally and without an epidural, and that got me thinking about the average weight of babies at birth--well, after I stopped grabbing my crotch and thinking "ow!"

DS was 8lb 1oz and had an "emergency" cesarean.

I love reading things like that... a midwife in my area posted about a women having a hba2c and delivering an 11+ lb baby!

I LOVE our bodies and what they're capable of! =)

LOL! I just posted that link on my BIL's fb page. His wife (SIL) goes in tomorrow for a c-section for their first child. Baby was measuring about 9lb 4oz and a big head, so the doc said c-section, but looks like this lady did just fine!

I am wondering though, why they let her go 9 days over, and weren't they checking the baby's size at appointments?! That almost sounds like she had gestational diabetes.

Both of my DDs were 7 14 1/2  and 19 inches long (yes both) But Fi's aunt had a 11 pound and a 10 pound baby and she gave birth to both babys naturally and early!

@hisgoosiegirl:  Some babies are just big, and as long as her fluids were good and baby & her were good there's really no reason to induce or schedule a cesarean... in most cases anyways. There are times where prior pelvic injury and such would cause issues but for the most part we're able to birth big babies just fine... especially if we can move & birth in positions like squatting where we get almost 2 more cm of pelvis opening. =)

My son was 7lbs 2 oz, natural birth as there was no time for an epi.  My aunt had three boys naturally and they were 9, 11, and 13 lbs.   I totally get whey they stopped going for their girl, LOL, I mean how big would the next one have been?  That is what worried her too and why they stopped, she still jokes about it.

I'm happy to see the poll results are showing an average of  7 - 8 lbs baby!  I have absolutely no desire to have a big baby - not only because of the labour issues, but then because they're so big and heavy already!  My SIL had a 10 lbs baby last year and by six months, he was already 20 lbs.  UGH!  I'd prefer to hit that 20 lbs mark around a year or so!

Keeping my fingers crossed that our little bub will be in the 7 - 8 lbs range.   DH and I are both tall and skinny so hopefully that helps things out - I don't mind a long/tall baby so long as it's not a cannon ball girth wise to go with it!  :-)

We've had 3! Our first was 7 lbs. 6 oz and 20.2 inches long, our second was 8 lbs. 4 oz and 18 inches long, and the third was 9 lbs. 4 oz and 20 inches long. The deliveries were vaginal but I did have an epidural each time because the labors were induced. I was incredibly lucky to have 3 healthy beautiful babies, but I think I'm done because I am not about to have a 10 pound baby since they seem to go up a pound each time.

@Ree723:  My son was 6lbs 14oz at birth but 20lbs at 4 months, so I don't think birth weight really has anything to do with it lol

@Winter2013:    Oh no! You're dashing my hopes!   :-)   I have several friends who had 7 lbs babies that didn't hit 20 lbs until 12 - 14 months, that's what I've been thinking was the norm.  Sigh.  Maybe it's time to start doing some bicep curls and tricep dips to strengthen these arms just in case...

I don't have any children yet, but I was born at 32 weeks at a little under 3 lbs, and SO was born at 28 weeks (they didn't expect him to make it) just under 2 lbs. I wish small babies (but not preemies!) for you! <3

He ended up being 6lbs 11oz, 21 inches at 39 weeks 1 day (vaginal, epidural turned off)- this was after multiple ultrasounds scaring the crap out of me that he was due to be over 9lbs at 40 weeks (I'm barely 5 feet tall, didn't think he would come naturally).

Both my girls were born at 38 wks and one was 9lbs 5 oz the other was 6lbs even.  My grandmother had huge babies though all over 10.5 lbs. Yikes! Of course she had four boys back when they didn't induce so they hung out in mom for a LONG time LOL.

    I love this thread.

I have not had a baby yet, but my doctor told me that if my baby continues to grow at the exact rate she is growing at (I don't really know if their growth stays constant or not) she will be about 6 lbs and 5-12 ounce at full term. I am excited to see how much she ends up weighing!!!

    DD#1 was 7lbs 2oz

    DD#2 was 7lbs 1oz.

Apparently that is the size babies that I make!  Both were delivered 2 days before their due dates.

My baby was 6lbs 8 and 1/2 oz, and he still got stuck!

I had to have a cesaerian, after 18 hours of labor, why couldn't the doctor figure that out ,like maybe, 1 hour in, why wait 18? LOL

I'm not a momma yet (won't be for several years) but my mother had 3 kids and we were 9+, 7+, and 7+ oz.  My brother was carried full term (he was the one over 9oz) and my sister and I were each 3 weeks early, so we woulda been up there at full term as well.  Some people just have large babies!!

Not a mum yet, but my sister had my nephew at 41 weeks and he was 11lbs. He was so big, his collarbone was broken during delivery. My sister regretted not having a c-section.

My first was 9lbs 12oz at birth. He was delivered by c-section.

My next one (due in June) may be the same, or less. I'm hoping for less! I have to have a c-section anyway...

Our son was 9lbs 2oz at birth. At our last ultrasound they estimated he would be about 7.5 pounds! Not very accurate I guess. No medications for his delivery and we did just fine. He just weighed in at 20 lbs even at his 4 month visit. He's 27 inches which is very long for his age too.
