So we are STILL in the process of buying our first home.

Our offer was just accepted for a home so now we are just waiting to hear back from the bank!

Our (hopefully) home is 1000sq ft (not including the basement which is partially finished). It feels a bit small but I feel like it is our first home and not our forever home so we could eventually upgrade in the future.

So, how big was your first home?

Its a split level (half basement, half crawlspace) and its 1600 sq ft. Definitely not out forever home, but really nice for our first home. We are actually debating extending out time here, and adding a second story over the living room and creating a master suite

We're still in our first home and I think it is around 1800sq ft.  We're currently in the process of finishing our basement, so that will add some room, too!  It's a little misleading...our house was built in 1940 and it's 1 1/2 stories, so the upstairs has those lovely slanted ceilings that force us to walk bent over in some areas.  It isn't really super usable space to us right now, but we're planning on eventually adding a master suite to the upstairs and then the house will feel really big.  We bought our house almost 3 years ago.

Our first home was around 1800 sqft. Btw-Congrats on putting in an offer! It is sooo exciting! Im sure you will love it! Post pics please!

We are now in our 2nd home(we intend it to be our forever home when we have a family) It is over 3000 sqft  with a fantastic yard but it is a home we intend to grow into not out of. Surprisingly though we still fill cozy in it even though there is only 2 of us in it!

Our first home is 1500 sq ft. It's small but big enough for now! We've been here 2 years now & looking to move in about 2 years to something bigger.

Our place is just under 1,500sqft, if I remember correctly. 3 bed/3 bath, and we plan on refinishing the basement to create a man-cave, and office for FI at some point. It's partially finished right now, but the previous owners didn't take care of it, at all.. or the whole house, for that matter. We're renovating bit-by-bit.
Congrats on putting in an offer! It's exciting!

We're still in our first home, with hope to move in 3 years or so. It's about 2500sqft with very little backyard space as it's a townhouse. While it's great space wise, we'd love to have something larger, and a big yard (considering we have 2 large dogs).

We just purchased our first home and it's just under 2600 sq ft. We waited a little longer so we could get something that we can see ourselves in when we start/finish having children. There are some things we don't love-small yard-land is $$$ here, we'd like a basement, and more storage space....but it's great for now and more than enough room.

We just bought our first home 2 years ago and it is about 2600 square feet. Which is 4 bed, 2.5 bath, and has a dining room and man cave.

I honestly can't think of any reason we'd ever need a bigger house. Even with kids this place seems more than big enough, which was kind of the plan. Given the scary housing market we really didn't want to buy a starter home and then want to move in 5  years and potentially lose money on our house-- so we picked a house that we knew we could be happy in for at LEAST 10 years. And really, I could see us retiring here.

Thats not to say we'll never move. I think it might be kind of fun to do a custom built house at some point (this place was new but had limited options for what could be done) so that everything would be just exactly the way we wanted it. But we'd only do that if we could really afford it.

GOSH! Most of your houses are enormous compared to ours. We have around 1000sqft and that's three bedrooms, one and a half bathrooms, a decent sized kitchen and (what is to us) a big sitting/dining room.

Our first home is 1,552 sq. ft. It's actually a townhouse in a brand new community that they're still building, so it's cool to see the neighborhood grow. Believe it or not, it's NOT noisy! No jackhammers at 6am or anything.

It has 2 full baths and 1 half bath, 3 bedrooms (one's an office and one is a makeshift "man cave") a big living room and kitchen, and a utility room downstairs on ground level.

It's only downfalls are that it would be extremely tight if we had a baby here since there is no place to stash computer desks and very expensive high end audio equipment that would be dangerous for a child to be around. Also if you can imagine a completely blank slate. White EVERYTHING. No character or charm to the house whatsoever. We had to swap out the light fixtures, paint, add crown moulding, etc. We'll probably live here about 4-5 years.

I bought my first place by myself. It was 1600sq ft. I had 2 roomates and it was plenty big enough for us.

DH and I are looking for a forever home now and are looking for something between 2-3,000sq ft. We already have one child and one on the way though, so the space is needed now!

@SpecialSundae: Thats exactly what I thought haha.

Our is a three bedroom one bath semi.

There are just three (DH, Daughter and I) of us for now. We figure by the time we decide to have another munchkin, we will have built some equity and will be comfortable enough to buy something a bit bigger (and hopefully a garage).

DH and I are starting house hunting now for our first home.  We're hoping to find something with at least 2200 - 2600 sq. ft.  We plan to be in this home for at least the next 8 years or so and should have a couple of kids by that time.  So we want to make sure we'll have room for our expanding family and our dog.

Our first is 1507sq. ft. We are still in it. We are planning on moving cities in a year but we will probably find something of similar size until we have 2 children and are busting out of this size!

@tranquility: 3 bedroom/1 bath is a great size for your first home! That is what we have, and it's the prefect size for us. Actually, it's just the two of us so we have 2 bedrooms that we don't even use! We've been here for 2 years, and plan to stay another 5-7 years. We figure when we add a couple of kids it will probably be a tight squeeze, but it's perfect right now.

This is our first home together and is 1700sq ft with 3br, 2.5ba, basement, and a really gorgeous yard with huge trees (can't see the neighbors!), and a little forest with 2 ravines in the back yard.   Oh, and we have a pool, but that's probably getting ripped out soon - just don't use it enough.  And I have a craft cave in the basement  <3

I love the area we live in, and I love our neighborhood (for the most part), but this is definitely not our Forever Home.  I think our next digs will be out west in Colorado on at least an acre in some amazing house in the mountains.  FI likes space, I like charm (and scenery), and we don't want kids so size isn't a factor.  I can't wait :)

Mine (which I bought while still single) is 1100 with 3 bedrooms and 2 baths on the main floor but with a full basement that extends the length of the house, so really it feels like 2200. With my FI, a dog, and 2 kids though it definitely feels like a full house! I worked so hard to get into this house before I met my FI and with the looming wedding budget I never want to leave! lol But with the market the way it is, it will be worth twice what I paid so we'll see:)

Ours is 1600 sq ft. Plus about 300 of finished space in the basement and a 1 car garage. We figure we could be comfortable until we have a second child (right now it's just me, DH, and our dog).

My first home was 900 square feet, excluding the unfinished basement. It was the perfect size for 2 people (myself and DS) and 2 cats. Our current home (a rental) is 2500 square feet, and it is a good size for Mr. LK, DS, myself, and our 2 cats. Our forever home, which we are in the market for now, will be in the 2500-3000 square foot range with a massive yard because we plan to add 2 dogs to the family.

I bought mine 2.5 years ago and it's a 1400 sqft condo.  Perfect for when I was single. No maintenance!! FH only stays a couple nights a week so it is still a good size.  The only place it's lacking sq footage is the kitchen and he LOVES to cook. I Hope to upgrade a few years after we get married. Not looking forward to shelling out another downpayment since we won't get much more than is owed on the house. Frown

Our condo is 673 sq ft. Tiny but cozy. When we buy our next place it will probably a townhouse or a semi similar in size to yours. As much as I love big homes I don't know what I would do with all of that space. I think I'll stick to fantasizing about decorating the huge homes my clients buy, way better for my pocket!

FI and I just bought our first home in July and it's just under 2300 sq ft. It's a little bit bigger than we'd planned (we'd been looking around 1500-1800), but we got lucky and found this home that we probably won't be growing out of anytime soon! It has 4 nice-size bedrooms and 2.5 baths, so we have lots of room for kiddos and dogs. Unfortunately, our yard isn't huge, but there's room for our pup and at least it isn't a pain to mow.

Good luck with your home purchase! It's really exciting despite how nerve-wracking it is!

I think ours is around 2,600 sf. It's a 3/3. I wish it was more like 1,800 sf.

We're about to have our first child, though, so we'll see if I still wish it were smaller. I just feel like we have so much unused space (that still requires being cleaned). And I'm of the mindset that the more room you have, the more stuff you acquire. I hate stuff.

my first home was a 900 sq ft bungalow with 1/2 finished basement.  After my divorce I was lucky enough to actually be able to sell it in this market.  I moved in with my FI - he has a 1000 sq ft ranch.  (his first house)

We didnt want the hassle of a move and trying to sell/buy or search again so we went straight to our forever home with room to grow into.  2800 sf not including finished basement 4bed/2.5 bath on 2 acres.

We just bought our first home in August, and it's an 1800 sqft Townhome with a two car garage (crucial during winters up here). It's 2 bed 1.5 bath and it will work out until we expand too much. The second bedroom is big and could easily be a room for two children, but it would be cramped once the started to get older. We will most likely wait for a few years until the market bounces back and then buy something bigger.

We love it for now though, and it's perfect for us :)

We wanted a house we could grow into and stay forever if we chose. So our house is around 2300 sq ft. 4 bedrooms, 3 baths, 2 car garage.

I'll cross my fingers for you and your offer! =)
