How cold is too cold to walk a dog?

I don’t think there is a “too cold”. You can put booties and a sweater on it, which is the only time I would recommend dressing a dog up. They might not be able to be out for very long, but at least won’t get frost bite.

It gets pretty cold here, with a windchill of about -20F sometimes. That’s too cold for anything other than just taking a dog out to do it’s business. I think anything around freezing though isn’t too cold.

@AB Bride:  Dogs need to get exercise, even if it’s cold. I say throw some shoes and a sweater on it, and take it out. Even if it’s only for 5 minutes or so.

@AB Bride:  As I said, there are temperatures that may be too cold to do anything more than letting it out to use the bathroom and walking around for a couple minutes, yes. However, I think dressing it up warmly to prevent frostbite would help a lot and allow it to get a least a little exercise, granted the dog actually wants to be out. I’ve never had a little dog, but my friend’s little one LOVES to be out in super, crazy cold weather.. I’m sure that varies from dog to dog though.

ETA: I see now you mean hypothetically. Yes, I think if its so cold outside, that even when dressed up, you get frostbite after a minute or so.. That’s too cold. At that point, I would be walking the dog around inside the house, lol.

@AB Bride:  I have a lab, so relatively short fur even though he’s bigger than the dog you’re describing. Typically the dog will tell you if it’s too cold to go on a walk, this usually happens when it’s -10 below (F) — I live in Michigan so this is a temperature that happens more than occasionally. If that’s the case, then they go right out to pee and right back in.

There are lots of ways for dogs to get mental and physical exercise without a walk.

i’m pretty sure -75F has never happened, aside from like, in the arctic.

buy a coat and booties for the dog, bring them out for 5-10 minutes, let them pee, and be done.

@AB Bride:  yup. dogs need exercise. bundle up, go out for 5 minutes, then come back.

unless the dog is litterbox trained, and has free reign of a massively huge empty indoor space to run around in, the dog needs to go out.

@AB Bride:  Well, I live in Florida, so honestly, I have no concept of “too cold”. 60 degrees is the dead of winter to me.

I’ve never owned a dog so I have to ask, if it’s too cold to walk them do you just let them go in the house?
