Hi everyone, I know it’s a little odd for a guy to post here, but I wanted to ask for your opinions and experiences (I’m definitely an overthinker).
I’m going to propose to my gf in the next few months, and I’m trying to plan everything out. The one thing I can’t figure out is how to present her the ring when I drop to my knee without ruining the surprise. I’d love to do the traditional ‘open the box’ presentation, but I can’t figure how to walk around with an obvious box bulge in my pocket before its time to propose. I’ve looked for a small ring box, but I’m worried she’ll still be able to tell. It’ll be sometime in the summer, so I won’t be wearing a jacket to help conceal it.
How did your FIs do it? Were they a lot more clever than I am, or did they just hold out the ring without the box (a lot easier to hide). I’ve love to hear your stories!
Thanks a bunch!

@plantobee: This doesnt really apply to me bc we were at home, but where are you planning to do it? If at a restaurant or something, perhaps you could “stage” the scene beforehand and have the box waiting somewhere for you when you arrive? Or if in a hotel room, etc., you could just hide the box somewhere in the room …

FI proposed with the ring in the box and after I said yes he put it on my finger. I think tht you can’t go wrong either way. She most probably won’t even remember. Good luck!

Without…because he wanted to hide it. He gave me the box later.

I’m sorry I should have elaborated a bit more. FI did it at home while getting ready for bed so I was getting into bed and he was just “putting his clothes away” when he turned around and dropped on one knee with the box in his hands.

it was in a box..just not a ring box.
it was in a bix box of macarons on top of the macarons

Mine proposed to me without the box but that’s because he proposed with a plastic toy ring, (long story.) But later when my ring was ready, he presented it to me by opening the box and then taking it out and placing it on my finger.

@wrkbrk: There’s a small ‘lake’ and park near to where we are, so I’m planning to get a hundred or so of floating water lanterns (kind of like the floating lantern ceremony in Hawaii), set them up in the water and on land, and then suggest we go for a walk, leading her to the place.
I thought of putting it in one of the lanterns (on land, I don’t trust them enough for in the water lol), but that involves guiding her to a specific lantern, which is a little harder than just pulling it out of my pants wherever we are. Plus, I’m just quite curious whether guys still do the box opening, or is it only in movies

Mine was in a shell, we got engaged on the beach. Do you know where you’re planning to propose? Maybe you could slip the ring into something that would make sense for where it’s happening like my fiance did?

I actually requested my FI to present the ring without the box long before he proposed. Maybe I’m just odd though haha. I thought it seemed sweeter and more meaningful for some reason…less commercial? Not sure if that makes sense. But I’m also not one for grand gestures, so I don’t know if that has anything to do with it.

my husband put my ring in my birthday card. it was a little girl’s card that came with a poster folded up like a flower. it was tucked in there and he had written “will you marry me?” inside of it.

No box – he had it in a plastic bag but took it out of the bag before holding it out for me to see. LOL

My fiance had the ring, box and all in his jacket pocket? Then again it was 6 degrees in Japan and I absolutely could not tell … lol.

We were at Disney World, at the Magic Kingdom, all day. He proposed after the fireworks at night. So he actually carried the ring in his WALLET all day!! Right before the fireworks, he went to the bathroom and transferred it to his pocket.
It’s funny because at one point during the day we were going to buy a bottle of water. He started to grab his credit card out, and I wondered why he wasn’t just using cash? It was just a bottle of water. But the ring was in where the cash was!
But I think it worked out well for him that way.
