- Wedding: October 2012
How did he propose? (Or did you propose?) Was it a total surprise or did you know it was coming? Did he pick out the ring by himself (if you have one; not all women want one) or did you shop together?
For me, the entire thing was a surprise. I had absolutely no idea that it was coming. We’d been talking a lot about getting married one day and then we were chatting online (we didn’t live together yet and found / find it fun to IM even if we’re not up for a phone conversation) and sending links back and forth of rings and extravagant houses and crazy dresses and suits and super crazy (to us) weddings.
A few nights later we went out on a simple, casual, nice date. When he dropped me off, we sat in the car talking for a bit. I was exhausted because I had worked that day and I had a bit of a migraine. He offered to walk me up to my apartment but I was afraid of what the dogs’ barking would do to my head. I wasn’t trying to ditch him, I was just ready to crawl into bed and sleep for two days.
He gave me a kiss goodnight and I had my hand on the door handle when he said, “Oh! I completely forgot. I have something for you.”
And he opened the between-the-seats console and took out the little box and my heart stopped and he opened it and neither of us said anything. Then I kissed him — several times over the next few minutes — and I reached out and touched the ring and I was actually speechless. He cleared his throat and said, “So, what do you think?”
As is the nature of our relationship, I smiled and kind of laughed and said, “What do I think about what? You haven’t asked me anything.”
And he cleared his throat again and took a deep breath and said, “Will you marry me?”
And, of course, I said yes. And he put the ring on my finger and it fit perfectly. Then he did come upstairs and the dogs did bark their unending excitement to see him, but I barely noticed. My migraine seemed to have taken a break and we spent the next few hours celebrating and feeling sexy and loved and wanted and completely amazed that we had found each other.
