ah sorry about the odd title -- I accidently hit the "enter" button prematurely and it posted my query. Ah well--- at least everything else is in order!
Mine was an heirloom passed down from FI's great-grandmother. When his Mom first gave it to him with the intention of giving it to me, I was there and, well, she messed up the surprise by showing it to me (she's no good at surprises). I didn't quite "get it" ar first and I put the ring on my right hand and wore it for a long time and my FI thought he would have to buy another engagement ring. I had been looking at them on Blue Nile and thought I wanted a princess cut with two pear shaped rubies on either side. Well, I realized that I was being a spoiled brat, and I gave FI the ring back and told him to give it back to me when he was ready. He waited a while and I was completely surprised by the proposal, but I already knew what the ring looked like. Now, I can't believe I ever wanted anything else. It's so beautiful and unique and I feel honored to wear it.
We went shopping together three days after getting engaged, lol!
We discussed and decided to get married, and figured out I needed a ring, so I suggested I go with him so it's less stressful for him and we're both sure I like what I get. Fortunately, we did have similar taste for the ring and agreed on one right away!
my bf and I have been talking about getting engaged for some time now.Last weekend we popped into a jewelry store "just to look" at what they had. We didn't really talk about it before hand so instead of trying on one when the salesperson offered, I got shy and we left. He let me know that evening he wished I had tried a few on.
So last Monday when he got off work we went back out, this time to try things out, see what we like, and get a true fitting. We were there for about 45 minutes trying on bands with different carat weights and wow!!! I'm glad we did. Even though my bf and I have a very similar taste in jewelry i feel so much better knowing we walked out of there and he knows, with all certainty, what I love. The proposal is still a huge mystery, as is when he;ll even buy the ring-- I'm guessing he'll take his mother or close friend in with him within a few weeks to check it back out and perhaps even buy it.
We went to a few places and looked around together so he could get an idea of what I liked. Then, he went back on his own at a later time and bought what he thought I would want.
We looked around together, and I emailed him rings I saw online that I liked. He ended up picking one of the ones I emailed him, hee hee. :)
He picked it out all by himself :) I wasn't sure what I wanted (to me DIAMONDS in general are pretty! hehe). I was very proud, it was a simple round cut diamond and it is perfect! It it just about 1 carat and it looks perfect on my fingers (not tiny but pretty small compared to most)
I wanted to vote for 2 categories....we picked the ring together and its an heirloom.
The fi and I went looking for a ring setting together once and found "the one." The center diamond of my ring was my FMIL, its 26 yrs old and will be continued to be passed on! I was so forturnate that my FMIL gave up her beautiful diamond to me!! I guess she loves me (thats a good thing!)
I told my fiance that I wanted a platinum band, and my input ended there. He worked with a jeweler to design a ring, but didn't like how it turned out. So, he ended up buying a designer ring. And I *love* it. I'm also super-happy that I didn't have to learn about diamonds :)
He was slick with it b/c he showed me a pic from when one of his cousins proposed to his now wife and I told him I didn't like it b/c it was just a big solitaire on a rather plain band. So he asked me what I would want if he were to propose. Bees...let me tell you...I described the ring of my dreams b/c I thought we were just having regular conversation =) He took it all in and desinged my ring himself..he incorporated all of my dreams plus added his own flavor.
I totally hinted at what I wanted (cushion, asscher, or radiant cut solitaire with a thin band). I also hinted that he should maybe ask my bff (now MOH) for help... and he did. Together they picked out a beautiful cushion cut solitaire in a pave setting. <3
I left it up to him. He knows what I like. The only thing he asked was what my size was.
We talked about it, and I gave him a few ideas. He showed me his "rejects", but my ring was a total and complete surprise...and I love it. He's a jewelry genius :)
We picked mine out on a vaca to Cozumel, but I then had to wait 3 weeks for him to propose it was pure torture, lol.
My now DH sent me (I didnt know he sent me) to Tiffany and to the diamond district here in NYC with my sister and aunt under the pretense that my mom was upgrading her ring for her 25th wedding anniversary. My sister said that my dad wanted us to go pick out some rings and stones. Naturally, while we were "looking for mom," I tried on rings for myself, fell in love with mine, and then my sister and DH snuck around and bought the ring for me =o) tricky tricky tricky
Im glad it went that way because round stones do NOT work on my hand, and those are his favorite. Cushions and asschers looked the best on my hand, but I didnt like the step cut of the asscher so cushion it was!
We went and looked a couple of times so he had an idea of what I liked. Then, unknown to me, he had a ring custom designed based on what I liked. It's awesome-simple, unique, and totally me.

Hello Hive :)
I was wondering if any of you took a visit WITH your SO to check out engagement rings, if you just *hinted* at what you liked or if they just took a shot & got you what they thought you'd like best. Or perhaps you already had a ring (or stone) that was in your family and you used that instead?
What did you think about what you did/ plan to do? Would you've done it any differently?
