Hi everyone!
I've seen a lot of posts about wedding colors, but I would like to know HOW you chose your colors. Were they your favorites? Was it the flower color symbolism? Did it just work out? Let me know...
I look forward to reading your replies!
I chose "aubergine" (its a fall purple in case you didn't know...I didn't!) and orange. These are NOT my favorite colors (I like them, but I'm more into blues and greens), but we're getting married outside in the fall and it just made sense. I'm really into them now! Good luck finding your colors!
red was my favorite color, and my other colors just went with the fall season - orange, gold, yellow, brown.
I always knew I wanted a black and white wedding. I don't know why... but it's what I've always had in my head! I just think it's classic and simple.
our colors are navy blue and gold. navy blue from my parents' wedding colors and it is very classic to me. Gold is just an accent. Our flowers are hydrangeas: bright blue, light blue, bright green, dark green and bright purple.
i first thought about the tone and "feel" for the wedding i was going for. I knew i wanted something that was elegant, shabby-chic, romantic and reflected my style in general. Thinking about the time of year the wedding was taking place was part of my thinking, but honestly that doesn't mean THAT much to me as i think color palettes can transcend "seasonal" cliches. (In my opinion, October wedding..doesn't have to be oranges, pumpkins, yellows, browns..etc. Christmas doesn't have to mean green and red )
Looking through blogs and such i found myself gravitating towards images like these:

i've always loved loved chocolate brown (one of my fav colors) so i knew i wanted that somehow.... then i love black too (dresses & tuxes)..they speak classic and chic to me. I also LOVE distressed things..... old wood, faded paper..and the like. I'm a designer and if you saw my design style you'd see how much i incorporate weathered objects into my work..so that reflects me for sure.
So the color palette kind of grew from that.. i also love rusty old pink colors or a robins egg blue... not sure exactly where those will come in.. they may, they may not. Everything will evolve most likely but thats where i'm starting. I have yet made an inspiration board but that will be my next step.

i hope my ramblings help in some way... My advice would be to look at images and see what you like... whether thats color, a pattern, a "feel" and begin there. Don't worry so much about the word "theme"... it doesn't have to have one i think. I wouldn't say i have a "theme" but a "shabby-chicy, elegant, rustic-y, romantic-y" styled wedding . Try to incorporate things you like and try to make them work together in a sensible way :)
We knew we wanted something Japanese, and though my favorite color is purple, that is the one color FI did not want. So we started with cherry blossom pink and went from there to the paper store and picked out our other colors (chocolate brown, pool blue/Tiffany blue, and a light tan).
If you need inspiration, check out this book: http://www.amazon.com/Color-Messages-Meanings-PANTONE-Resource/dp/0971401063/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1268451929&sr=8-6#reader_0971401063 At the end, it has color combinations organized by mood. I just love looking at it. Happy searching!
I always always wanted pink and gold because I think they're just gorgeous together...but as I started looking at things in those colors I felt more like I was planning an all girls elegant soiree than a wedding (I mean the groom IS there too haha). So I decided on maroon and gold instead with orange/red/cream etc. fall bouquets
I honestly have no idea from where I picked my colors. I just started thinking about what colors I found pleasant and interesting while still looking elegant. This was before we knew what season we'd get married in, so I didn't take that into account. It took all of five minutes to decide on my colors and fortunately FI liked them as well. I ended up with lavender, navy, pale blue, and cream, with gold accents.
I cant decide between the two choices I made for myself yet.. I have always wanted RED as my main color.. but I cant decide between the two of these
I am still in debate, since I haven't quite determined what season I want it in yet =/
My favorite color is Tiffany blue... and I love it paired w/ burgandy. I was planning to toss in some damask or peacock feathers too...
But then that changed when we upgraded our wedding to October, my favorite holiday = Halloween! So, I still want some peacock, which looks great w/ deep purple. And for the halloween? Burnt orange. Its going to be awesome.
Thx to everyone that helped me find inspiration photos!!!
I have no idea what my colors are yet...blue and yellow? yellow and purple? green and yellow? I'm getting married during the Easter season but everytime I try to negotiate w/ my BM, MOH, and FI; they all disagree..sorry I'm not much help.
:(
I like how clean white and green looks! SO that's what I went with. I didn't want to worry about having to match everything.
Our colors were kind of a work in progress. I originally wanted navy and blush pink as the colors, with navy BM dresses but I didn't find any I liked so I started looking at more taupe-ish shades. Well taupe morphed into ivory which I thought was lovely with pink, and then the BM dresses ended up being more gold in person after we ordered them, so the colors are now gold, ivory, and blush pink. I think it will actually be quite perfect for our formal wedding.
We started with, hmm maybe we can do something near St. Patty's day? Green?
I also knew my FI would NOT be one to go for girly colors. Baby blues, or anything pink/purple... NOT his thing. So b&w and green was born. I LOVE apple green and that's what we went with... interestingly I never realized it was my favorite color til then!
When we decided to have a winter wedding I knew I wanted to stick with the winter wonderland feel and have the whole room shimmer like snow... so blue and silver were obvious choices. But... thinking about a blue/silver/white wedding made the whole thing seem very cold and 2 dimensional, so I decided to add another color in. I spent a while searching and I realized that I really loved the look of mixed metals so I decided to warm things up with gold. Here is the inspiration board I made.
Blue is both my fave color and his. So we always knew that we were going to have blue. When we picked the date our planner suggested black and silver. I liked it because it goes well with a bling theme and cool for a New Years Day wedding.
Our colors are pool, black, sliver, and white.
I keep on seeing all this peacock wedding decor and I am really starting to love it.. I have always wanted red but I dunno the peacock theme keeps sticking in my mind.. Do you ladies think its overdone?
I always thought purple would be my wedding color. But once we decided on a beach local I couldn't help wanting to use the shades of blue for our wedding colors and white as our background color whenever possible to keep in clean. It really is about what inspires you. Check out wedding photos from here, the knot and project wedding and I'm sure you'll be inspired and something is bound to tickle your fancy. I had a basic idea what I wanted to do but found so much inspiration from online. Southern Wedding Magazine blog also has AMAZING photos. My wedding is approaching next month and I'm a little sad that my search for inspiration is about over... but I'm happy to pass it on to others!
Wow. Thank you so much, everyone! All of your comments are helpful... I'm sure I'll be rereading them!
We randomly got the idea for yellow (thinking of "you are my sunshine" and that it represents friendship... we are first and foremost best friends). He jokingly suggested purple (thinking of the Lakers
), but I later found lavender/yellow looked great together! We also have considered yellow/red. So, I'm sure yellow will stay no matter what!
Of course, I have plenty of time to figure all of this out. Thanks again, everyone!
Ummm...I have an unhealthy obsession with boats, water, beaches, and nautical things in general. Seriously, a sailboat makes my head whip around faster then the world's hottest man naked...anywhere. I also love blue. From there, the color and theme have evolved kind of organically. Its Navy blue, White, and bits of red and yellow. I have also been guided by what my FI can and will tolerate- we're more nautical with Navy blue instead of more beachy with pale/medium blues because my FI prefers the dark blue and nautical theme to beachy theme, etc.
I wanted romantic, and vintage feel. To me, that means peach, pink and golds!
Black and silver were a given for us but we wanted something with a little more color with it. We originally chose crimson and then when we went to get BMs dresses, the color had been discontinued. So I searched high and low for a color that I like that would be appropriate for spring and finally settled on watermelon (I wanted red/pink but nothing too light so this seemed the best fit).
I picked blue and green. I just wanted general colors for each of them so that I can use whatever I like and not be tied down. Also, they are our fav colors...well mine is green and FI's is blue. Although, not being colorblind I didn't realise just how much certain shades of green bother FI as he's red/green.
I wanted beautiful, bright summery colours because our wedding is in August. Through my obsessive wedding internet searches I found pics of a pink, orange, and lime wedding and decided to steal the colours/ideas. Yup, I'm a thief.
(But not really a thief, I just stole the colours and SOME ideas. It was exactly what I already had in my mind.)
i chose orange and brown because i SOOO wanted orange lillies at our wedding. but the funny thing is - after i chose the colors/flowers - i couldn't FIND fake orange lillies and went with burnt orange orchids and cream lillies (this was 2 years ago when we got engaged) - this year when I started putting everything together - i FOUND MY ORANGE LILLIES!!! :)
so everything's perfect now. brown bm dresses - and everything else is orange :)
and here are my flowers - which, btw - i am SO blessed that a friend at work is putting together for me as arranging silk flowers is a hobby of hers! this is her first draft:

Thanks, ladies. All of your colors are great! And, your inspirations are even better!
We've now thought of yellow and blue (a lighter hue). I'm sure we'll go through every color in the rainbow by the time we need to decide.
i chose my favorite color. i pretty much always knew that no matter what season, what formality, what location, etc. of my wedding, it would have to be pink!
i also wanted lots of flowers... which weren't really in the budget, but we helped get that feel by adding lots of spring colors and with the bridesmaids dresses.

Hehe, I know how you feel! I had like 10 different color combinations until FI told me to stop looking. I really wanted red in our color scheme and FI wanted a blue shade, which I thought would look pretty tacky until I was browsing and saw Mrs. Kitten blog about "Poppy and Aqua" from Snippet and Ink (http://snippetandink.blogspot.com/2008/07/board-250-aqua-poppy.html). It looked beautiful even FI loved it! We also want our wedding to be cheerful and a little bit casual and we thought it would be the perfect color combination. Here is my inspiration board that I created with our colors!
I think yellow and a lighter blue will look beautiful and perfect for an August wedding :-).
I LOVE bright colors, so I decided on pink, orange, and yellow, and gerbera daisies! Since our date is in late spring, and the ceremony and reception will be outdoors, I think these colors/flowers will be lovely. My FI told me to do what made me happy, and not spend too much money lol. His only request was that he doesn't have to wear pink.
I love all of these colors! Shushu1208, I really like your inspiration board.
Well my favorite color is purple and i wanted things to be different so started with my e-ring... after looking i couldn't find a purple stone i liked but as you can see to the left i found a pink one that i absolutely loved... so i went from there. and then i found a combination of fuschia and orange and fell in love with so those became my colors
There was never a question for me. My wedding colour would be pink and when people ask my colours I give them a look and they say "ahhhh riiiiight piiiink!" its funny!
I am that girl!
Our colours are green and yellow. Green for me, since it's my favourite colour, and yellow for FH since it's his.
I originally thought I wanted pink and brown, because those are two colors that I love together. But, since we're not having any bridesmaids, just our two little girls standing with us, I couldn't convince them to wear brown dresses & have pink flowers. And, any pink dresses we were finding weren't working for us. So, finally I found some green dresses that we fell in love with. So, then I thought that the green with some pink flowers & touches all around would be great. But....then, I started thinking that we're sort of between summer and fall with our date, so I wanted to lean more toward a fall feel. And, I kept seeing all of these inspiration pics of green with purple, and I absolutely love that together. So, now I've settled on a green and purple theme, with a bit of a winery/vineyard theme going on, because that's a feel that both FI & I love.

for us, we thought about what colours we are always drawn to in decorating our home
dark brown, fresh green, and white
