We decided to regsiter at three different places to ensure that there would be enough gifts at various price points for all of our guests. One high end store, one middle of the road and one big-box store.
Target was a no-brainer since everyone has access to one (including/especially the people from my small hometown where the nearest Wal-Mart is 30 mins away) and they're merchandise. Yes, their return policy is a PITA and we actually ran into an issue, but c'est le vie.
Bed, Bath, and Beyond was chose because my friend raved about their customer service in regards to their registry (which is top notch, IMO). I also know that their free wrapping policy makes them a favorite with guests.
We picked Crate and Barrel because of a pre-existing love of the store, and the fact that it's very easy on the wallet for the things they offer. Our second store was BBB, and we mainly picked that one because both our hometowns had a BBB store near them, and their return policy is amazing (they'll take stuff without a receipt for store credit). Lastly we picked Target because there were a few items, like board games, we wanted to register for, and it was a good "all-purpose" store that we wouldn't mind getting gift cards for if people decided to go that route.
I think it's important to find a store that reflects your personal style and has an easy online ordering system for people who don't have a store near them.
Now that I think about it, we never really even thought about where to register when we started. We just both were like, "well, duh, C&B, BBB and Target!"
We only have 1 right now. I've been obsessed with Pottery Barn forever, so that was a given. I know some people hate it but I can't help it. I drank the PB kool-aid.
It kills my mom that Fortunoff went out of business & we can't register there. LOL We were looking for another high-end store so we went to Macy's & Bloomingdales but we found that the same fine china patters, stemware, etc were also available at Bed Bath & Beyond for less and people can use those coupons that come in the mail too.
Most of my friends say you should have 3 registries but I think we'll just stick with the 2 and make the BB&B one pretty big so people have choices in various price ranges.
we did stores that were close in distance to us and our guests and that have the type of things that we want for a good price. after i got engaged i paid particularly close attention to registries, and there would be $100 picture frames and $300 vases. i'm not that kind of girl, just because other people are paying doesn't mean i want them spending that much! we went to target and BB&B.

I am curious how people decided where to register. Was the decision mostly based on pre-existing preferences to stores? On registry policies of certain stores? On what types of items you were registering for? Something else? Which stores did you end up choosing?
