How did you find your MUA & Hair Stylist? What did you pay?

@Barbiestylez:  I haven’t booked mine yet but both quotes I got were $220 for my hair/makeup and then $85 a person for hair, plus $85 a person for makeup.  I think $170 for bridesmaids hair and makeup is a little ridiculous to be honest, but then again I’ve never hired a MUA before..

@Barbiestylez:  I called gay bars, found a drag queen who has a salon, called him, and scheduled my trial. My trial was $50 for both hair and makeup. Day-of he did my mom and I both for $100 (it was supposed to be $200!) and two of my bridesmaids for $100 each.

ETA: I had my trial in early August and the wedding was October 27.

@Barbiestylez:  It was definitely a good choice! Not bragging or anything, but I think I looked perfect on my wedding day!

@Barbiestylez:  He is one of my best friends who happens to own his own salon and does freelance work (including hair and make up for celebrities and photoshoots for magazines and catalogs, etc.)  I love him dearly and had been going to him for hair services for many years.  His book fills a couple of months in advance, and, for my wedding, I was able to book even farther in advance.  I paid $150 for hair and make up services, plus a 20 percent tip.

I’m lucky – a good friend is a makeup artist so that was booked about 10 seconds after I told her we were engaged! She is a private MUA who uses mostly MAC products.

For hair, I’ve just booked a stylist who I first met when she did my friend’s wedding (I was a BM). I booked her about a year in advance – once I had a date I figured I might as well lock them in.

Makeup is mates rates, hair is $90 (same price for bride and bridesmaids).

Both my MUA and hair stylist advertise online, facebook pages, and through agencies (Living Dolls is a big one where I live). Facebook is good – you can usually see other work people have done.

@Barbiestylez:  I am using a friend from highschool who is now a makeup artist – she charges $40 a person for makeup (whether you are bride or bridesmaid) and she does a fantastic job!

My hair I am using a friend of a friend who works at a local salon.  They come to you, and bring as many people as you need.  They charge $50 for a style like you want (down and curly) or $60 for up dos.

I saw just ask around! Ask other people who have been married in your area and go from there!!

Edit: To answer you last question, I booked with them about a month ago.  So about 10 months in advance – we are getting married at a very popular time of year!

@Barbiestylez:  My hair and makeup will be down by the salon I go to. $95 for very simple hair and up from there. $85 for makeup application. Since I recently cut off all of my hair, I’m thinking about going with finger waves so I’m looking at about $95 for hair.

Does your salon offer the services you are looking for? That’s where I’d start. After that, I’d go to some boutique cosmetic stores or ask the gals at MAC if they do it on the side (i’m sure they do).

@Barbiestylez:  Yes, I would just ask them. I was in my salon and when I was checking in for a mani, I just inquired. You can just go into a salon that looks good to you and ask right up front. They should be more than happy to help you and if they don’t provide the services you need, direct you to other salons that do.

You can always ask for recommendations from your bridal boutique, photographer or anyone else in the industry who works directly with the bridal party.
