so tell me bees! what is your dirty little weight loss secret! i would like to know what method you used, how much you lost, and in how much time :)
I've lost 25 pounds so far. I started Weight Watchers in March.
Agreed with the WW. I followed the program and EXERCISED every day...was very dedicated. Lost 40 pounds in 6 months. 3 lbs a week at first, then more like 1 after the first 20.
i didnt eat past 6pm no matter what, and i just watched my calorie in take. i tried to stay right around 1200 for the day. i lost 30 pounds before my wedding.
stress and anxiety. I'm so busy running around doing wedding and work stuff that I don't have time to eat.
Watching my calorie intake and cutting out alcohol. Exercise @ least 3x a wk. I was able to lose 7lbs in 2months. I know its not much but I'm also getting my body ready to get pregnant.
I have successfully lost weight on Weight Watchers a couple of times, 30-40lbs in about 4-5 months. Obviously I have yet to master the maintaining bit ;)
I agree with the PP's. I followed most guidelines for WW and used Jillian Micheals 30 day Shred or participated in Water Aerobics.
I started early and started a realistic workout routine that I will actually do.
I am not over weight so much as I have jiggle where it shouldn't be. I've lost 10 lbs so far and have another 10 to go.
But... I kinda want to have this all off before October when FH and I a pre-wedding moon of sorts (his deployment vacation actually lol)
You have lots of time so don't look for secrets or the "easy way" because they always backfire.
Look to make changes that you can keep for a lifetime and educate yourself.
Simplified this means "Eat quality food, but not a lot and move a lot."
Small changes have big impact.
How much are you looking to lose? Is it really a weight or a body composition/shape problem?

This is also a great article for beginners:

I'd also recommend picking up this book:http://www.stumptuous.com/the-female-body-breakthrough
Lastly, bodies are made in the kitchen.

A good read on fats: http://www.the-natural-health-hub.com/healthy-fat.html
I haven't lost much weight yet, probably only about 8 lbs since I got engaged. I hope to lose at least 5-10 more though by October, but I'm worried that won't happen cuz it's so close. I've been walking about 1.5-3 miles per day 4-5 days a week and eating healthy mostly for the past few months. I also started using the shake weight. It seems to tone my arms up pretty well.
Thanks for the links :)
@2bMrsG: I'm also trying to lose 5-10 lbs. before my October wedding.
I'm cutting out soda, sticking with water. Increasing fruits and veggies on my plate. I'm working out 20 min. a day with Denise Austin DVDs. I know sometimes her positive expressiveness is grating on some people, but I find it silly and she does keep me going which is the important thing. I make sure to work out in the morning before I've had any breakfast as it causes the body to burn stored fat faster. I'm also cutting down on what I eat at night. I don't have any numbers for you yet as I just started my routine, but ask me again in a couple weeks!
@2bMrsG:Does that shake weight really work? Looks so funny on the commercial, but I always pick it up when I'm out. I want to tone up my arms too.
No secrets really. Just watched my calorie intake by using myfitnesspal.com and exercised. I didn't starve myself or deprive myself but let myself have a treat here and there. I lost 35 lbs since last year, 25 while working out for the wedding. I also toned up a lot.
I joined WeightWatchers in April and I've lost 11lbs so far. I'm hoping to lose 9 more before June.
@2bMrsG: You definately could do that!
Instead of walking, I would try internvals. So run the length of one block as fast as you can, then walk to catch your breath one block. Is amazing how fast it goes and intervals burn soooo many more calories, in way less time. And it also boosts your metabolic burn rate for hours after (IE you burn more just living life)
I lost a few before my wedding. I basically just ate less (stress does that to me) and excercised more (elptical, treadmill, weights, pushups, sit ups, lunges etc) and lose a few lbs.
i lost 20 pounds in a year by going to see a nutritionist and somewhat regular exercise.
I did 60 days of P90x and lost 10lbs and mega inches. I could see my self morphing (in a good way) everyday!! Currently I am just watching my caloric intake, not eating pass 7p and working out at least 3 days a week. No soda, bad carbs, or fastfood! First fitting in 2 weeks!!!
I lost 40 pounds in 6 months.
3 keys for me:
1. Diet: I did Paleo/Primal (I cut out most processed foods). Tried to cut out as much sugar, flour, etc as possible. My focus was and has been on eating 'whole' foods - so, lots of veggies, eggs, animal protein, fruit...
2. Exercise: 3x's a week, 45 minute sessions each
3. Sleep: I think this is the most overlooked key to weight loss - without enough sleep, cortisol levels are up - sleep allows the body to do what it needs to - and getting enough sleep really helped me keep my diet in check
Denise Austin was my next door neighbor for so many years, but I have never even given her DVD's a chance. I think it would be weird now knowing her as I do, haha. I probably wouldn't take it seriously.
I did my first day of the 30 Day Shred and have done it previously with great success. I'm also cutting out soda and alcohol on the weekdays and cutting out starches and fried food (boo).
As for the people who are doing weight watchers...do you all actually sign up for the monthly plan online? Or are you just buying the weight watchers food from the grocery store?
I go through long-term cycles of going to the gym and not going to the gym. On my one concerted attempt at weight loss I lost about 8 lbs by restricting calories--just planning my meals way ahead of time and not setting myself up for failure by having snack foods in the house. At the time I wasn't going to the gym, so I wasn't really happy with the shape I was in despite losing the weight. When I work out regularly on weight machines, my body just looks more fit--my breasts sit higher, my shoulders and arms look firmer... I would really recommend weights. Even if you gain some weight in muscle mass, you won't "bulk up" (women find it virtually impossible to bulk up without testosterone). Cardio is great for you, and increases the benefit you get from weights (as I heard it the theory is that doing cardio first gets your blood pumping out to your extremities so they can take the weight training better), but weights shape you. In my experience. I am not an expert by ANY means.
(Now, I've gained back the weight AND I'm not going to the gym, but I blame a year of working + night classes + weekend volunteering. I had no time, and o-chem drove me to comfort food! But I bought a home elliptical trainer gadget and I'm working out again, although not as much as I used to, so I feel a bit better. I just miss the weight machines SO MUCH.)
@Cornflakegirl: Actually, experts like Jillian Michaels recommend to eat BEFORE your workout (about 45 min before) and also try to eat about 45 to 60 min AFTER you work out. Check it out here! :)
fitness bootcamp and eating healthier (no processed foods). lost 15 lbs so far:)
I do the online WeightWatchers...I dropped 10 pounds between January and May! I've kind of stalled out now, but I didn't have a lot to go in the first place so I'm thinking this may be where I settle out.
Portion control, cutting way back on sweets, and cutting down on pasta and bread. I've lost 12 in the last few months.
i think im going to sign up for weight watchers. my problem is that I work until 11:30pm and thats when I eat dinner so I cant do the whole not eating past 6 or 7. I work in a hospital and a nursing home so I am constantly walking/rushing around, and lifting people, I know it is not really a work out, but I dont have the time to hit the gym. When I get home I usually eat dinner then walk a mile or 2 around the block. So what I really need to focus on is my food intake since I do not have the time or energy for a real workout. I think weight watchers will help because I really like guidlines, and also I might try out these workout videos for my days off.
Thanks so much everyone
Good luck with everything! I don't follow the not eating after 6 pm rule myself, I used to work until 8 and didn't eat dinner until after then, It's sort of iffy if calories early late at night are worse than calories at other times. I think the problem is most people sit down at the TV and eat a bowl of icecream or chips and don't think about the extra calories that they are eating at night.
I watch what I eat and work out 3-5 days a week. But, I honestly lost about 5-10 pounds before the wedding just from running around, being busy, being stressed, and not eating NEARLY enough. It wasn't healthy and I did gain it back after the wedding, but I was shocked at how much I lost just from being busy for a few weeks up to the wedding. I've heard of that happening to other brides too, but I wouldn't recommend crash dieting that way or counting on it happening. Be healthy, eat small, regular, whole meals and exercise.
Oh, and I agree with the PP's who said getting plenty of sleep. Also drink PLENTY of water, as your body holds on to water weight when dehydrated.
@2bMrsG: Hahaha people actually use the shake weight? That's hilarious! You've...um...seen the SNL DVD commercial, right?
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/04/18/shake-weight-snl-video_n_541956.html
Well I jump started my weight loss by having my wisdom teeth pulled and not being able to eat.. haha horrible, but it helped. I lost 8 lbs and now I am just motivated to keep it off and try to lose about 5-10 more. I am a runner and although that is an awesome workout and burns tons of calories I have a hard time losing weight by just running because my body is so used to it. I try to incorporate different classes in the gym like spinning and TRX. I am a pretty healthy eater but I am trying to cut back on carbs... I love breadd!! Good luck to everyone!
I haven't lost any yet. I'm not really hoping to lose weight, as much as change my bod a bit. I just want to be fitter, stronger, healthier and happier. So what I am doing is this:
Try my hardest to work out 4x a week. Up to an hour each time.
Eat healthy. I'll still eat junk and fat and carbs in moderation, but I will munch on an apple, carrots, celery, hot peppers, pepperoni before I grad an icecream or bag of chips.
Drink lots of water
Take green tea pills. Why? Because it's so healthy for you.
Laugh, and enjoy every minute of every day, in the body I have. And appreciate my body, for everything it is. It sounds lame, but to me this is almost revolutionary for me. I'm not going to battle myself anymore to be a certain way, or become something so unattainable. I just want to be the best that I can be, in an attainable, healthy, fun way.
I've lost 14 pounds (out of the 20 I'm hoping to lose by the wedding) by getting regular exercise, eating healthy and regularly, and cutting way down on sugar. I completely cut out soda for a month, and after that, I no longer craved or wanted it, and I rarely eat dessert. Seriously, lots of fruits, veggies, lean meats, and whole grains + exercise = weight loss! And I feel so much better, too! I have more energy, my body feels great, and my clothes fit great (and I even needed some new, smaller clothes!).
I have lost 12 pounds without exercise. I know that I'll never maintain a continual exercise regime, so I need to lose the weight without an exercise plan. I am active, though, with day to day things, like gardening, playing with our dog, cleaning, etc.
I also keep track of what I'm eating on a MyFoodDiary.com. I stopped tracking it for about two months, and I put back on 4 pounds, so now I'm back to tracking it.
I also follow "The French Don't Diet Plan". It's a great book that teaches you how to eat everything you want, stay active naturally, and lose unwanted pounds without diet and exercise. I know a lot of people swear by exercise, but I'm not conviced it's necessary. Being active is necessary, but I don't think it's necessary to exercise 30 minutes a day to get healthy.
I agree that a person doesn't necessarily need mundane excersise to lose weight or maintain a healthy lifestyle. But you have to remember cleaning, gardening, playing with your dog, is excersise, sometimes longer than 30 minutes of excersise, just not running on a treadmill.
It really depends on a persons body, and what it responds to too. Until last week I had stopped doing my daily workouts yet I still was cleaning, playing with my son, going for walks, shopping, yard work ( spring), shoveling snow ( winter), and I still managed to gain 15 lbs. So for me excersise is actually pretty important. My body responds to it, and so does my mind. It keeps me fitter, stronger, happier. Actually, overall, healthier.
@Cash000: I prefer to think of what I do as living life... I know there are some people who swear by exercise, feel more healthy when they do it, get a high off it, etc. I don't enjoy it, because I feel like I'm putting my life on hold for 30 minutes or so that I'm doing it.
It works for you, which is good. I've just always wondered, if I did formal exercise every day and got my body used to it (as you seem to have done), what would happen if/when I'm no longer physically able to keep to that regime. You said once you stopped, you put on 15 pounds.
Please don't take this the wrong way, but my first thought when I read you put on 15 pounds after you stopped exercising was that you probably continued to eat the same amount of food you ate when you had been exercising. I know it would be hard for me to figure out how much fuel my body needed if I stopped an exercise routine. I'd probably even eat a little more, because I'd have more time on my hands.
That's why I don't want to start an exercise routine. I prefer to know that if I put on weight, it's because I've been eating more than my body needs for everyday life, rather than thinking I have to exercise more. I can cut back on the amount of food I eat and still have the same amount of time to do all the things I do now. I can't add a formal exercise routine to my day and still have the same amount of time to do everything else...
