Our Corgi Eva is named after the pixar character (from WALL-E) although she was originally going to be named Careful (short for Careful what you wish for) because I had been BEGGING for a dog for almost a year before my husband surprised me with a puppy on my birthday. We sat for an hour or so and played with different names (other thoughts were Willow , Winnifred and Grace) but Eva was the first one she came running to.

Stella (grey) is named after Stella McCartney and Vera (caramel) is named after Vera Wang.
My chow chow's name is Kyra. I chose that name b/c her mommy's
name was Kita and I wanted to keep the "starts with a K" theme going. All of the female pups have "K" names. Her eis a picture of her lounging on my daughter's bed.
I named her Chula because in spanish "Chula" Means Cute/Pretty.
and she was such a cute puppy

Believe it or not, I've always had a little pool of named I've liked for dogs, haha. So whenever we get one, we pick which name from the pool best matches the dog's personality :)
Oh yes, and it will be the same for our kids. We already have a pool of names reserved for them :)
My FI named the dog Indiana after one of his favorite movies, Indiana Jones. I wanted to name the cat after a Harry Potter character and settled on Bellatrix because I thought it was different and cute.

Our dog was a rescue and her original name was "Princess". As must as we loved her we just didn't love her name, but we wanted her new name to honor her old life - she was 10 when we got her, she'd been around. So we named her after Princess Aurora from Sleeping Beauty, and her nickname is Rory.
We discussed pet names for MONTHS before getting a dog. The boy wanted to name him Skeletor (I wish I was kidding) and Ahab but I wanted a person's name. After a long, long, LONG debate, the boy suggested Basil (pronounced "bazzle," NOT "bay-zle") and I liked it.

We already have our next male dog's name picked out. Franklin.
When we come acros names in books that we really like for pets or kids, we save them on a list! FH is a political science professor, and Tammany was named after Tammany Hall. It's turned out to be an appropriate moniker, as she is bossy! ;)
@jaylovessteez: Love the purple nail polish! Such diva-tude!
Bitey is Bitey because first of all she'd always chew on my hands as a puppy and also after a Simpons episode (Marge vs. The Monorail):
Marge: "Homer, there's a family of opossums in here!"
Homer: "I call the big one Bitey."
Needless to stay it stuck.
Satchel is named after the lead guitarist in Steel Panther (do not google them if you're easily offended). My FI named him.

We named our dog, Cooper, because it just seemed to fit him. Plus he is brindle & we got reminded of the brand Cooper Tire, it looks like a tire ran over him so he has tire marks :)
& then my other dog, Minni, is a chihuahua & we named him Minni because he's like a Miniature Version of Cooper. Get it - Minni Cooper :)
(That's the only picture I could find of Minni on my work computer, and that's my husband :) )
My Fiance is part of the open source community (computer stuff). So our first cat is named after the penguin mascot "Tux". Then our next cat is named after Mozilla's web browser "Firefox". Our third cat is named Cisco, we like their routers. Originally we were going to name her Linksys but Cisco fit better.
Well, FI and I dog (and puppy) sat for a friend for 1 week, and the litter was about 3-4 weeks old. All the pups had markings, and were nicknamed based on that (star, tree, ring... etc) but the smallest of them all had no markings, so he was nameless. FI kept saying he was the coolest puppy from the litter... eventually it became "He's so cool he's chilly" and thus the name Chilly.
We adopted Leah, and she already had a name, so it stayed.
My cat's name is Martini, after the drink. I wanted to name her Cosmo, but that reminded me to much of Cosmo Cramer. We all her Tini for short.
My BF and I got our pup about a year ago. He has always had boy dogs named Rocky growing up. We choose a cute little girl lab mix, which we obviously cannot name Rocky. So our sweet puppy came to be known as Roxy! Haha!

We adopted our yellow lab mix when he was 2-3 years old at a local shelter. His shelter name was "Buddie" (yes, even with the cutesy spelling), which I imagine came from his approaching everyone with the wagging tail and smiling face, asking you to play with him! My fiance was in the Marines before I met him, so he wanted to name the dog after a famous Marine. Chesty Puller would have fit perfectly, but eventually we settled on Barney Ross, a former rabbi who gave up his religious teaching as a young man when his father was brutally murdered. He became a famous boxer and a highly decorated Marine. I don't think our Barney's ambitions are quite as lofty. :)
Cullen was named after my boyfriend Edward Cullen (duh!
) and Ranger was named after a character in Janet Evanovitch's Stephanie Plum books!
I'm always thinking of food and sweets, and my Persian cats are fluffy and sweet and look good enough to eat, so they're Muffin and Honey. Even though my husband thinks Muffin is a gay name for a boy cat, I told him our cats' sexual preferences are none of his concern. Here they are kneading bread (food again!) on their favorite blanket.
We named our dog Ace before we met him! It was something my fiance came up with and even though it's common, we loved it! He's our first dog together, our #1, and he was by FAR the best dog in the litter since we had first pick! LOL
@camrie- I love that you named yours "Bitey!" That's so great! (Big Simpsons's fan here.)
@cardigan: HECK YES! STEPHANIE PLUM! Did you know One for the Money might be out next year in the theater and Katherine Heigl is playing her?!
@christalynn11: I did! Sherri Shepherd is playing Lula, which I am unreasonably excited about! :)
I like dorky people names for dogs, so I came up with a potential list and figured out which one best matched his personality. My list was Melvin, Nigel, Reuben, Jethro, and a few others that I can't remember. I went with Melvin, and I think it fits him perfectly. For other animals I've had Oliver, Oscar, Tiberious, Malcolm, and Chester.
The Boy and I decided she needed a girly name since most people would ask what HIS name was. My dog is not a dude, she's a lady! We decided on Petunia since you can't really confused that name as being a boy doggy :)

When I got my cat, he was being called Wall-E, like the movie. But I never saw it, and I wasn't into it. Then the name Ollie popped up because it sounded similar, I'd always liked the name. When I googled the name Oliver I knew it was the right one, it means "army of elves," which is perfect for him since he's a tough little guy that does not realize how small he really is.
The beagle, Simon, was named after a character in a book I liked that the time. The big black mutt is Chloe. She came from the pound with that name and we just left it.
FI made me promise he could name our first joint pet Oscar Zoroaster Phadrig Isaac Norman Henkle Emmanuel Ambrose Diggs (it's the Wizard of Oz'z full name) and we'd just call him Oz.
@Dragonsus: yes she is a DIVA! she is even modeling on the website where i got the puppy nail polish from :) Check her out!

We adopted both of our pooches, Bob & Bella. I'm not sure why Bella is Bella but the Dachshund Rescue told us that the family who had Bob had a 5 year old. Apparently he named him. :)
Normandy was found on the off ramp for the Normandie Ave. exit on a VERY busy freeway here in California. It was a miracle he was found. The woman who rescued him couldn't keep him but was happy to give him to us as long as we kept his name.
@ Meliss - My FI says the same thing about our kitty! Your comment made me laugh! I gotta remember that response for next time.
bailey (the beagle) was our first pup and we named her that after our first attempt at CHLOE being a failed attempt (she wouldn't respond) but she did to bailey!!!! :P *or so we think
buddy (the yorkie) was stuck with his name, cuz FI took a few days to come up with a name, couldn't think of anything, and kept calling him "hey buddy, come here" "hey buddy, dont do that" LOL (i wanted to name him teddy, cuz he looks like a stuffed teddy bear)
when we get our golden, we're gonna name him murphy. (FI wanted to name the yorkie that, but i didn't think it suited him).

I got Hailey from a rescue group & they named her after Hailey's commet. She runs half sitting, it looks like her tail is going faster than the rest of her body. Hard to describe, but it makes everyone laugh when they see her run. Sometimes she runs normal thou. I did change the spelling to Hayley (I like Ys instead of Is).

@jaylovessteez:HAHAHA! I Love it! (Eva would NEVER tolerate nail polish - she chews on her nails when they get too long!)
Josie I named myself. I wanted a fun and girly name, Josie seemed to fit the bill. I actually was looking at names on baby-name sites rather than pet-name sites when I picked her name.
Stormy was named by his breeder. I planned on changing his name, but when I got him it just seemed to fit. I can't imagine him being named anything else. She named him Stormy because the litter was born during a thunderstorm and he was the dog she had kept for herself out of the litter. And it worked great too, because when we went and picked him up, it stormed during our 4-hr drive back to fiance's parents house and again that night.
Rufus was named at the shelter, we just kept his name, didn't even plan on changing it because we liked it.
@meliss: You could also say that a name doesn't have anything to do with sexual orientation. :)
This is Yoshi. His original name was Fluffy but we thought it didn't fit. He's named for the Super Mario Bros character.
