I think it’s going to be challenging. While there are some resorts that fall within that price range, what you’re likely to encounter is a lot of buffet food, restrictions on dining or top shelf liquors, etc. I don’t know how long you were thinking of staying, but I think it’s far better to do 5 nights in an amazing resort, and stay within your budget, than to do 7 nights in a place that is just so so. When you look back on this 10 years from now you’re either going to remember how great it was, or how dissappointed you were. So take a couple of nights off, and stay someplace amazing!

I was going to suggest Excellence (Cancun), since we REALLY enjoyed it, but I guess if it’s out of your price range then you can’t do it.

I would like to suggest though that going the budget route isn’t necessarily for the best. I would rather go somewhere nice and wait a few months (or year or whatever to save up) than be stuck somewhere with mediocre food and not so great rooms.

Realistically when you go to an all inclusive, you will spend most of your time lying by the beach or pools, eating, drinking, and sleeping. If you were going on more of an adventurous honeymoon, I would be open to staying at a cheaper hotel because I wouldn’t be spending as much time there.

I’ve had friends who went to crappier resorts and they didn’t have the best time.

Have you looked at booking a package through an online travel agent?  We booked our Hawaiian honeymoon through Pleasant Holidays and it was massively cheaper than booking directly through the hotel.  We did an air/hotel/car package.  The air portion was the same as booking directly through the airline, but the hotel and car portion of the package was hundreds of dollars less per day.

I stayed at the Gran Porto Real in Playa del Carmen years ago and it was great.

@virgomasala80:  We just got back from Secrets Maroma…it is just North of Playa del Carmen and we received a shuttle from the airport by the resort. It was beautiful and the staff was nice but a little too nice….always calling our room asking if we needed anything. The food was good, not great, and the drinks were strong!! Any where you choose you will love!

@virgomasala80:  We spent $4k and that gave us an ocean view suite, flights, and we were there for a week. To be honest, it was the best $4k that we spent. Once the wedding got closer, we got stressed and we wanted needed a nice refresh and time away to just be us. If you go with a travel agent you can do payements, if you would like I can give you the info for our agent, it was only $300 to reserve our room and flights and we had until 3 weeks before the wedding to pay it off. We made the $300 down payment, and then just started paying $50 here, $100 there and it really does get paid off rather quickly.

I will suggest using an agency to book it, if something goes wrong you need someone in your corner to worry about fixing the problem for you. Our return flight home was cancelled and we were none the wiser because our agent rebooked us and smoothed everything out for us.

@virgomasala80:  Don’t do anything you’re not comfortable with. I guess I am used to traveling in “style” – I’d rather be on a shorter trip (I hate leaving my cat anyway) and stay in luxury vs. going on a long trip and hosteling it. Everyone has different travel styles, though. Excellence isn’t even close to the cost of some top resorts… yeah it’s good, but not Brad & Angelina would stay there good.

I would try to figure out what you really want to get out of this trip. If you don’t care much about food or premium liquor, and you think you’ll do lots of excursions (to ruins, zip lining, etc.), then I think you could get away with something cheaper. If you want this to be a trip where you feel pampered and can really enjoy a great selection of restaurants, pay a bit more.

I agree with @FutureWife517, definitely look into using a travel agent! We are heading to Rivieria Maya later this year (same time you are thinking about traveling) and we booked using our AAA travel agent and only had to put down a $300 deposit. The remainder is due 4 weeks before the trip. We are staying at Valentin Imperial Maya for 10 days and it came out to about $3100 total for the all inclusive, flights, insurance & roundtrip transfers.
