Well, we picked our honeymoon location by the simple fact that we have A- no money to go on a honeymoon and B- no time to spend on a honeymoon. Thus, 3 days and 2 nights of camping. Whoo.
Our requirements were:
My FI has tons of Hilton points from travelling, so our goal was to basically pay for our honeymoon stay with Hilton points and frequent flyer miles. We decided on Cabo San Lucas, Mexico because the Hilton resort is supposed to be awesome there.
We're going to Las Vegas. We both aren't big fans of sitting on the beach doing nothing vacations (because we don't love the beach), but we also don't like sight-seeing very busy vacations (because we are at heart lazy). So we thought Vegas was a good combination of eating at good restaurants, seeing some shows, and hanging out in a fabulous hotel room. Perfect!
We're going to Costa Rica. Our honeymoon requirements:
- direct flight on Continental from Houston (we're using miles and did not want to deal with layovers and connecting flights)
- somewhere beachy where we can do a little bit of something and a lot of nothing
And viola - Costa Rica it is!
i said since i have to make most of the decisions for the wedding, he has to pick the honeymoon. i'm so sick of decisions! we agreed that we both just wanted to do nothing but relax, which pretty much said beach to us, and he went with it. he picked a cruise.
I think we're going with Costa Rica. Our requirements were:
1. Somewhere that would be okay in June (we're leaving right after the wedding)
2. Somewhere with a beach
3. Somewhere we haven't been yet
4. Somewhere that combines adventure and relaxation
5. Not too "tourist-y"
We've also talked about Costa Rica. Have any of those of you who are planning on Costa Rica, I thought it was rainy season there in June/July?
My FI is supposed to be planning the honeymoon once we decide on a location. We're kinda all over the place. We started with Thailand or Peru, then moved to Rio or a three day European adventure. Now we are trying to set a reasonable budget, so I think we are thinking Central America and/or Eastern Caribbean. I didn't really want to go to the Caribbean because I wanted something more exotic. Now I think we're going to end up somewhere a lot closer to home just because of budget.
@whitesonnet: I'm not sure what TexasMeredith heard, but I heard it's kinda like South Florida in the summer. It *could* rain and if it does, it will downpour for 15 minutes and be done with. I also heard that the jungles, trees, etc. are especially lush as it is their "green" season.
Oh the jealousy! Greece (or Vienna) has always been my dream Honeymoon. I think I've read Mrs. Star's blogs a zillion times. Unfortunately, I don't think we're going to be able to swing it with our budget, although my FMIL is amazing at planning cheap trips. Maybe for our 1yr?
I think we're going to Aruba. We def want to sit on a beach & just chill for a week or so. September is smack in the middle of hurricane season & Aruba's supposed to be a pretty safe bet. It's also a short flight for us and reasonably priced. We had 4 weddings in Aug-Oct and they all went there and had an amazing time.
I was adament about not going anywhere near Hurrican alley in September, so Europe was kind of an obvious choice for us. We're taking a Med cruise so that we can do a blend of beachy lounging and action-packed itinerary.
Ours took no thought. My uncle called and said, "Would you like a cruise for your wedding present?" And we said, yes please! When picking which crusie to go on, we picked one leaving from our city so we had no additional travel.
We decided to go to Excellence Playa Mujeres.
Our requirements:
-Beach
-All-inclusive/adults only
-Reasonably priced airfare & limited travel time
-Good online reviews or feedback from friends
We want a beach location with diving and snorkeling. All-inclusive and not 12 hours in an airport. We've decided on Cozumel and the Wyndham Aura Cozumel Grand Bay which is a small boutique all-inclusive.
I can't wait to go to Greece! My FI spent a semester there in college.
@hotchildinthecity and @WhiteSonnet - I've heard that Coasta Rica can be a lot more rainy than South Florida in June/July. We were there in late May this year and the locals kept telling us that we were lucky to just miss the rainy season. They said it can rain almost all day on the beach. We were in the North by Guancaste/Playa Hermosa. Just a thought!
We already had our World Cup trip booked (we had been saving up since we started dating) so we figured it'd be an easy transition to a honeymoon!
We're actually going to do two honeymoons. One right after the wedding to de-stress and one in 2011. Right after the wedding we're headed to Jamaica. We want to lounge, get sun and have an all-inclusive. I love our resort as well. It's amazing.
In 2011, I think we're taking a train from the top of the boot in Italy down to the heel. 1/2 of my family lives there, so it'll be quite fun.
@Gator: Thanks. FI is doing all the honeymoon work so I'll have him look into it. I was really hoping to do the Costa Rica thing because beyond that, we're kinda running out of ideas!
my fiance also did the honeymoon planning. Were going to the st regis bora bora, so excited!
@hotchildinthecity we are also going right after our wedding (ours is in July) and are trying to take weather into consideration. My FI had his heart set on New Zealand but it will be winter there, and will be all crappy/rainy and cold! That also kind of ruled out Fiji and Tahiti because they are nearby and also will be in the middle of winter. Not nearly as cold as New Zealand, but still a little rainy, plus my fiance thinks he will get bored on an island... (My list of requirements is almost the same as yours except the beach part is more for me).
So FINALLY - I think we are settling on Costa Brava/Catalonia, along the northern coast of Spain just below the French Border! There are tons of quaint villages there dotting the coastline, you have your mediterranean beaches and great weather but also lots of culture (Salvador Dahli and Picasso both lived in the town of Cadaques) and there is some night life not to mention amazing food. And it's only a 2 hour drive from Barcelona and just across the border from France so you could get in more of Europe if you wanted to spend the first part relaxing on the beach and then squeeze in some adventure/sight-seeing. So maybe check out Costa Brava - everyone I know who has gone is obsessed w/ it, and it's sort of a hidden gem because it's off the beaten path away from all the big cities! Our summer is their "touristy" season but it's not nearly as bad as the bigger cities in europe, and it's more July and August so I think you would be okay in June.
We were all over the map at first, too. We've considered Scotland, Costa Rica, Peru, Croatia, S. Africa, Italy, Germany, and a tour of through Western US national parks. Our criteria:
* A place where we can relax for a few days then take in good sites
* Good food & wine
* Relatively easy travel
* Somewhere we've never been
* Scenic hiking
* Somewhere not too sunny (he hates that) and not too cold/ rainy (I hate it)
We have *just about* decided on Tuscany. Still waiting for those airfare prices to go down!
We were SUPPOSED to do a 10 day mediteranean cruise to Greece, Italy and Turkey but I got laid off last year about 3 months before the wedding
We ended up on an 8 day cruise to San Juan, St. Thomas, Nassau, Tortola and Antigua. It was cheap, sunny, tropical and it left the day after our wedding, giving us enough time for me to get back for a wedding I was a bridesmaid in, two weeks to the day after our wedding.
We'll make it to Greece one day!!!
We originally were not going to have one, but on a whim, I checked out cruises and since we live in FL, there is no travel fee to the port! On top of that, we were engaged on a cruise vacation so it made sense! =D
We never got to do that whole "backpack around Europe" rite of passage throughout college - so we are taking a month to go do it for our honeymoon! I must confess, I am really excited!
I travel A LOT for work...therefore, I have racked up a lot of miles on US Air and hotel points through Marriott. We knew we wanted to go to the Caribbean, so I researched which islands US Air flew to and where Marriott had properties. I've always wanted to go to Aruba so ultimately that's where we decided to go :)
We made our decision based 100% on one thing we really wanted: A private pool. So we found an awesome place in Acapulco, here is a pic of our private pool & pool area! We LOVED the privacy & the view!
We're going to Japan because it's the anime and videogame mecca of the world, and that's what brought us together and that's what we both love most, so it was a no-brainer.
Hot springs and sushi, cannot wait!
We're going to St. Thomas/St. John. We wanted pretty beaches but still a town.
@Jaimea, oh trust me, good food and wine was a must for us too!!!
It's so fun to hear where all of you are going!
We wanted it to be the trip of a lifetime- somewhere we might not be able to go to later in life with work, kids, etc. We ended up doing a one week safari in South Africa and then one week on the beach in Mauritius. Just got back on Thursday and am still amazed at how incredible it was. It's the only time in my life I ever took a vacation that was longer than a week. So worth it!
i wanted beach and sun and drinks in my hand. we're going to punta cana DR to an all-inclusive there. i can't wait to relax after our wedding. we're putting a lot of ourselves into the weekend, so we wanted to make sure we didn't have to do or think about anything if we didn't want to. if we want to be more active, we have activities that we can do!

My fiance and I are ridiculously lucky and have people paying for our honeymoon! :)
We thought about a ton of differnt places to go, and finally settled on GREECE!!!, It was hard to nail somewhere down, but we will be spending four days in a little Greek town outside of Athens, and then one night in Athens. On our way back home, we will stay in Paris for two days! I am so excited.
How did you guys decide on a place?
