We decided to go to Australia and New Zealand, because we have a bucket list (written down! lol) and wanted to make sure that we traveled to one place on our list. So, we wanted to scuba dive the Great Barrier Reef. Also, our wedding is in November and Aus/NZ is one of the only places that’s really nice and warm in November, since it’s the beginning of summer there.

We didn’t want to travel too far so we decided on Turks and Caicos.

These were the main factors we considered:

1. weather – we’re getting married in November and not everywhere is nice that time of year

2. length of trip – certain far-flung places need at least a 2 week vacation in my opinion

3. amount we wanted to spend

4. type of trip we wanted – beach, city, adventure

5. how much effort we want to expend – we decided we didn’t want to deal with any of the hard parts of traveling on our honeymoon, i.e. major jetlag, language barriers, foreign customs, unsafe water, etc.

6. Whether we or our family had visited the spot before – we wanted to go to a place that was new to both of us, so we didn’t have any competing memories of the place.  We also wanted to avoid places that our families had traveled to because we didn’t want to deal with people second-guessing our choices (oh you should have stayed there, oh you didn’t get to see this?, etc, etc)

ETA: 7. Likliness of us vacationing there in the future – we wanted to pick something “honeymoon worthy,” and something that we wouldn’t do for just any old vacation.

In the end we chose the Caribbean because it is easy to get to and very traveler-friendly.  We chose St. Lucia because we’d never been there before (and neither had our families) and it offered both relaxing beach time and the rainforest and mountains on the southern end.  And being one of the most expensive Caribbean islands, we figured we were unlikely to choose it for a future vacay.  Ta-da!

I still don’t know if we did! It’s hard to know if it’s the right place, we debated for a VERY long time too. The places we (seriously) considered were the following (among MANY ‘if only we were rich’ options:

– mediterranian cruise
– cruise from vancouver to hawaii
– fly to hawaii and cruise around the islands
– italy
– france
– turks and caicos
– st lucia

And for each place we had reasons against them.. eventually decided on Antigua as it seemed to meet our list of criteria. We got a private little hut right on the beach and I really hope it’s the right choice! We’ll never know what our other choices could have held but I know we’ll enjoy this trip!

We wanted tropical for sure, and didn’t want to waste a whole day traveling, so we decided first we wanted the Carribean. Secondly, we wanted to register for our honeymoon instead of gifts we don’t need (we already live together) so we narrowed it down to Sandals Resorts. Sandals offers honeymoon registry on their website, so our guests may contribute if they’d like to. Or they can gift us a massage, private dinner on the beach so on and so forth. They are on many islands in the Caribean so I looked for an island that had two things on my list: volcanoes and waterfalls. This narrowed down my search to St. Lucia. We will be staying there for 1 week. I’m excited about the wedding but even more so about our honeymoon!!

@babu22:  Yep, this is basically how we decided, too.  We chose Tortola in the BVI.  We were beyond pleased with our choice!

We knew we wanted to go somewhere in the Caribbean general area so we wouldn’t be on a plane forever.  We really wanted a non-touristy place without cruise ships, throngs of tourists, and ugly tourist traps and shops.  We wanted beautiful beaches, good food, and options of activites.  We ended up going to Anguilla for 8 days.  It was the best trip of my life.

I wanted to go back to Puerto Rico. Fiance said he wanted to take a cruise since I’d never been on one, but he wanted to go somewhere different than PR (which I understood)

After searching cruises for July, we decided the most appealing was a cruise to Key West, FL, Ocho Rios, Jamaica, and the Grand Cayman Islands. Neither of us have been to any of those places, so it should be a lot of fun.

Our goal was just to get as far away as possible so we can be alone 🙂 I think mission accomplished.

Lots of research!  We just want to relax, lay on the beach and by the pool, and have a lot of just the two of us time 😉

We were initially looking at the “fancier” islands, but then we both realized that we don’t really want to do excursions, so we decided to save St. Lucia, etc. for when we would make the most of it.  We ended up choosing an adults-only all inclusive in Punta Cana.  24 room service, pool and beach service, hot tub in room, hammock on the balcony… I cannot WAIT!
