@seevan07:  I’ve been doing this at my internship and it has gone over well. Basically I work in a museum with a staff of 2 and a whole bunch of interns who just do what they’re told. I wanted to work more hours, so I pointed out a bunch of projects that I could do that would 1) improve the museum and 2) require minimal input from them.

The difference between my job is probably that I’ve been working there for 2 years and am as close to an equal as you can be while still being an intern. So it was easy to bring up that topic naturally.

You are interested in the billing position, but it “could take weeks”…to do what?  Be available? What is it exactly that you want to do?

Then I would email or call her, and say, “I am very interested in the billing position that we talked about earlier this year.  While I will definitely come back to work as a floater, is there anything I can do to make myself the best candidate for the billing position?”

Something like that.

@seevan07:  Oh, I see.  That’s what I thought!  Don’t feel like a “doofus” (good word).  I would just say what I suggested: “I’m really looking forward to coming back to work, as a floater or anything.  Is there anything I can do to help set up the billing position we talked about?  I am so excited for that opportunity.”

Don’t ask in a way that sounds like you are only interested in the one position…and good luck!
