If its a friend and you would like to invite them, just let them know you would like them to come as a guest. If not, I would just let them know you have decided to go a different direction with your photography but you greatly appreciate their offer.

Can you spin it that you’ve decided you want him there as a friend to share in your day and not have to just photograph from the outside?

Agree with all previous posters – I was in the same situation, although I didn’t decide not to use him because he wasn’t as skilled.  We actually attended a mutual friend’s wedding where he was the photographer, and I really felt like he could have enjoyed things so much more if he weren’t in the position of wedding photographer.  I would definitely say that you want him to enjoy your wedding as a guest rather than as a contracted vendor AND guest.  You should be quick about it though, because the day is right around the corner!!

If he’s not a particularly close friend then you tell him that you’ve reviewed the style of photography you want at your wedding and, regretfully, will not be using his services.
