i love to take a long bubble bath to relax. Put on some good music, get a gossip magazine, wine. Have your man give you a massage...that always works for me! online shopping helps too :)
I like to play my favourite music softly in the background and work on some little project like for the wedding or just simply cross-stitching while drinking a glass of wine :)
When I'm stressed and cranky, I have sex. And I feel a million times better!!! I say go and do the no-pants dance with your man!
Aww your advice is all so wonderful. Unfortunately, much of your advice is not possible for me because my SO is out of town at the moment.
I wish my brain had an "off" button.
@MissHobbit: Sweetie, sorry to hear you are going through a rough patch. Sometimes it helps me to light a few scented candles and take a hot shower or bath to melt away stress. Hope you feel better soon :)
@MissHobbit: I'm with those bees who like their bath and candles and some music (but I like to listen to hip hop and dance music, I'm just not a classical gal). I also rub my shoulders and neck with icyhot before laying down to bed. If Mr.ND isn't there to give me a massage, it's the next best thing :-) Little bath, little hot cocoa, and then snuggling in bed with nice relaxed muscles.
Watch that stupid movie that's your secret favorite. For me, it's "The Wedding Singer" with Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. I also am having to work harder to find comfort these days.
I snuggle my cat. :) Also...there's something else that helps. I wouldn't normally say this, but I have a feeling with an ID like yours, you will understand: I watch The Fellowship of the Ring. It is such an outstanding movie, and let me just say that there's something comforting in its reminders of life's journey, finding our way through the fires that come. I realize I tend to watch it when I am at a crossroads in life. It helps that I live in Northern California and, with its hills and colorful fun people who have helped make this my home over the past 8 years, it is very much Hobbiton to me. So, for what it's worth, perhaps you need a little Shire boost to help ya through. :)
@Cornflakegirl: That is so thoughtful, I almost teared up (admittedly, it's been a pretty emotional day). Thank you; thank you very much, everybody.
@MissHobbit: *hugs* I hope you feel better soon sweety, I'm praying for ya :)
@MissHobbit: Aww! I was a little shy about admitting it but I took a chance and I'm glad it touched you so! Then again, my bridal party is walking down the aisle to "Concerning Hobbits"... who am I kidding? Ha! :) Chin up, lady, you'll get through this rough patch in no time.
i usually try to watch a funny movie, surf the internet (or just look around on WB!), take a bubble bath and listen to some good music, clean (i have no idea why, but this always makes me feel better), work-out... or honestly, sometimes i just go to bed. feel better :)
@MissHobbit: I've had some stress with my family recently. One thing that ended up taking a HUGE load off of my shoulders was writting a letter to them (but not sending it). There were so many things that I felt needed to be said, and I didn't always have those at the ready when we discussed the issue. This way I feel like it's been said.
online shopping.
also, dance parties. if i want to cry after a hard day, i'll pump up Ke$ha and dance like a crazy person.
but mostly? BOOKS. best escapism in the world. a good book is my brain's "off button."
@prairiedog: Yesterday when I was feeling the most down, I tried your Ke$ha trick. It did help.
In addition to the ones already mentioned (reading, wine) I recommend yoga, a phone call to a close friend or family member, listening to your favorite comforting songs, and looking a cute pictures of baby animals on the internet. :)
Big hugs and I hope you feel better soon! I totally understand, I've been going through a hard time with stress lately myself and it can be hard to pull yourself out of it.
oh I also like watching videos of cute kittens on youtube. or reading the blog "hyperbole and a half". Those two things always make me smile or laugh.
I sure fire way to get me in a good mood is: wine, chocolate and cheese.
Throw in a funny movie -- BLISS :)
<3 Hyperbole and a Half. Also xkcd, if you're nerdy in a particular way. Oh, and cakewrecks! Cakewrecks always makes me laugh.
Honestly- to bring my stress levels from thrrough the roof- going to implode/explode simualtaneously... back down to zero, I go for a run, its a superb stress buster!
If you dont run, powerwalk to the point of being slightly out of breath- it time to yourself, you can sort out all the mess in your head and your natural calmer hormones come out in force.
A quick fix when your reaaly worked up, press your fingers over your (closed) eyes, applying some pressure- this slows the heartrate down!
:) and chocolate¬!
I go to the local animal shelter and see the puppies and kitties. Or I look at them online. They are just soooo cute! You can't help but ooh and ahh and squee at them!
Watch a comedy (highly suggest Forgetting Sarah Marshall) and/or listen to music. Sometimes I'd indulge in chocolate as well.
ETA: Exercise would help as well! Hope you feel better soon!
If it's during the day I stop by McDonald's to get a large sweet tea, roll down my windows, and crank up some feel good music!
youtube! works wonders..here are my favorites..

FREAKIN HYSTERICAL..warning..NOT WORK APPROPRIATE! Katy Perry's song "Peacock" on Chat Roulette..seriously. a riot.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQ1HKCYJM5U
just..HAHAHA. that is all. ^^
@MissHobbit: Ha! That music is the best. :) Hmm...all this talk of LOTR...I think I'm due for a viewing m'self. Yay for shoe shopping. Whatcha get may I ask?
I like to put up some of my favorite songs and just start singing at the top of my lungs. :P
You all are so wonderful!
@sorrycharlie: Youtube really does do the trick! I watched videos from the Trevor Project's "it gets better" campaign The target audince is LGBQ youth, but the message is pretty universal and inspiring.
@Cornflakegirl: A pair of grey kitten heels, new sneakers, chocolate brown ballet flats and new work shoes. :)
i watch one of my favorite movies and tune out the rest of the world some of my favorite feel good movies are ...
Mary Poppins *hangs head in shame*, the sandlot, legally blonde, lucas, clueless, and a few others. Pop one of those in and sit down with a skinny cow ice cream cone and im good to go....
Physical activity always seems to do the trick. I put a bunch of loud fast music on my mp3 player and go for a run. Or in the summer I'll hop on my motorcycle and go for a rip. Fresh air and sunshine never fails.
The catch is, when I'm feeling really crappy, it's hard to motivate myself to change out of my pjs and sweats and leave the house. When I'm at my absolute most stressed out and unhappy, I get out my guitar and look up tabs to my favorite songs. It always feels so therapeutic to get out all the negative feelings in musical form. It never fails to cheer me up to the point where I feel like going out and doing something productive.

I've had a lot of stress this week in my personal life, particularly with regard to my family, and it's really got me down. Even my normal remedy of a glass of wine and a good book doesn't seem to be working.
What do you do to cheer yourselves up? Maybe I need to update my technique.
