My friend is a jeweller and told me that toothpaste with a soft toothbrush is the best way to get your ring clean without having to take it to a jeweller. She even cleans her own jewellery that way when she can't be bothered taking it in to work for a proper clean. I do mine every few days (yes I am that anal) because the stone is exposed at the bottom and dust gets caught in it and makes the morganite look a bit cloudy. It works a charm and always makes my ring look the way it did when I first got it!
I work in dental offices, so I just throw my ring into a little bag of soap and put it in the ultrasonic cleaner used for instruments! (Just a tip for anyone else who works in the dental field...?) As for home remedies, not to sure, but I would second the other poster who said not to use toothpaste. You'd probably be scratching up the metal. I wonder if those effervescent denture tablets would work?
I use jerwlery cleaner but when that gets too dirty i stop because the dirt in the water goes in the crevices of my ring so I use dish soap and water and let it soak for 10 min even longer wont hurt then use a soft tooth brush to scrub it then rinse under water for a few seconds and dry it with a soft cloth..
This way is great if you don't have a steam cleaner:
1. Soak your ring in a cup of 1/3 mild dish soap (like Ivory or Dawn) and 2/3 water. While its soaking, place a teakettle on to boil.
2. When it gets close to boiling, take your ring out of the soap and scrub gently with a soft toothbrush.
3. Hold your ring carefully with tweezers or a hair clip. Once the kettle starts steaming, set the ring in the stream of steam. Turn at different angles- especially if you have a complicated setting. Do this to get the steam in all the little crevices of your ring.
4. A nice finishing touch is to dip it or rinse it with rubbing alcohol so it dries with no water marks.
It comes out soooooo shiny! And all you need is a teakettle!
You can also do this with an electric kettle or even an espresso steam nozzel. Just be careful not to burn yourself. I called my jeweler and they said its perfectly safe to use steam to clean your ring.
I do this whenever I make tea and it keeps all my channel set stones pretty clean :)
I told my FI about this thread and he told me that his work has an ultrasonic bath which he'll use to clean it! One of his coworkers uses it to clean her ring and she swears by it. I'm excited to give it a try.
HOT HOT water (same effect as steam) and a toothbrush = amazingly shiny with no harsh chemicals that can wear down the metal.
Half Mr. Clean and Half water works like a charm! My jeweler told me about it.
hmm...would a clothing steamer work? hot water, steamer...same thing. Maybe i'll try it.
I use the little red bottle of cleaner.. cheap and it works great :) When that gets dirty I'll prob give the windex a try bc it sound so easy! I usually clean my ring every Friday, but sometimes more if I'm going to be seeing someone who hasn't seen it yet!
i always take mine to the jeweler but then gain i don't have a diamond s all the chemicals are't safe for my stone...i do his once a month and who cares if they notie.... actually i went 3 months befoe first having it cleaned and the jeweler told me that that will cause the ring to irritate the skin... so now it's monthly for me
I bought a baby toothbrush (re: soft) at the Dollar Store. I scrub the ring with a little avon bubble bath and then rinse with hot water.
The bubble bath is mild but scrubs it up good.
Not to mention cheap!
I totally just went over this with my best friend's dad who is a gemologist and the post caught my eye.
For ladies who have white gold or gold rings, make sure that you don't use ammonia because it breaks down the metal over time. It will actually strip the plating of white gold so your rings will become more yellow-tinted over time. Windex and some other cleaners have ammonia in it too so make sure you check.
My ring is platinum so I use windex with ammonia and a soft toothbrush and he said that was fine.
Ultrasonic cleaners aren't good for pave or micropave because people lose stones inside all the time.
The best way is steam like they do at the jewelry store so a clothing steamer would be awesome and I'm totally going to try it.
I talked with my jeweler, and they told me that windex and toothpaste are "abrasives" and like previously mentioned, they can break the metal compounds down of your ring. When I went there, they offered a free at home cleaner to take with me...Im sure its complimentary at ALL places...?
I clean my rings in a 50mL breaker, with 40mL of a 1:1 ethanol/Millipore water mixture. I then place in a Branson 2510 sonicator at 25ºC for 15 minutes.
:)
