My FI and I are no where near ready for kids, but we do talk about baby names a lot. I've read a few baby name posts today, and I was curious about the hive's opinion of the name Dorothy.
It was my grandma's name and she passed away about a year ago. We were VERY close and I would love to use her name for a girl if I ever have one. The thing is, I don't love the name, but I do love the meaning behind it. We will probably end up using it as a middle name, but nothing really seems to flow with it (as the middle name).
I like the nickname Dori - but it reminds me of the Finding Nemo fish.
We also like the names Nora, Claire, and Violet but they hold no sentimental value.
Thoughts????
I actually love Dorothy, especially using "Dot" as a nickname. I always thought that was cute. Or I just loved Animaniacs too much as a child.
Honestly, I don't care for the name Dorothy. And I really only think of the Wizard of Oz when I hear it. But it shouldn't matter what everybody else thinks. You should pick the name you love! I LOVE Nora and Claire. I love that Dorothy holds sentimental value, but if you don't love it, perhaps that isn't the name for you? Maybe it would work as a middle name somehow as you said?
I'm not a big fan of Dorothy, but I think Dottie would be cute for a baby!
I think it sounds like a grandma's name (sorry) but calling her Dot or Dori is cute. I would probably use it as a middle name and do something more contemporary for the first name.
I only associate it with The Wizard of Oz, but as a name I like it. Maybe it's time for Dorothy to have a comeback!
My MIL is named Dorothy but goes by Dee. When I was an intern, my supervisor's name was also Dorothy. She goes by her middle name of Beth. Personally, I wouldn't name a child that.
I love the name Dorothy, it was my grandmother's name as well. Dottie would be a cute nickname! My grandma's nickname was Gert... not sure how that one happened! Lol
I don't care for it as a first name but I love the meaning behind it and I think it would make a cute middle name.
As soon as i saw the post i started singing songs from The wizard of Oz... Now Fi is looking at me funny... But I think I would like the name if it wasnt for The Wizard of Oz
i had a childhood friend damed dorothy - we called her dot. i really love the name
My grandmother's name is Dorothy and everyone calls her Dot, so for me the name holds the connotation of an older woman, but if you love it- go for it!
It was my Mom Mom's name, too. But honestly, it's just not my cuppa tea. Maybe as a middle name?
@cannon: My grandma went by Dot! I totally forgot about the Animaniacs, but I loved them too.
@hisgoosiegirl: Don't be sorry - it is a grandma's name!
Anyone have any suggestions for a first name that flows well with Dorothy as a middle name?
I think Nora Dorothy, Claire Dorothy, and Violet Dorothy all sound awkward.
I guess I am kinda hoping it gets popular again. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it will anytime soon. I found this article Vintage Names: 100-Year Names That Sound New Again but Dorothy wasn't on it.
Ditto to all the Grandma comments, and ditto to the nicknames "Dot" and "Dottie. My one warning is that the name can sound beautiful, or ugly depending on how it's pronounced. My Grandfather was welsh, and he said her name with drawn out vowel sounds "Dara-Thee" (which sounds pretty) instead of "Dor-thee" (which doesn't).
@Crabbabs: You have fabulous taste in baby names! Nora and Violet are our top contenders if/when we have a daughter. Clare would be on our list too but our friends little girl is Clara.
As for Dorothy, I don't love it. I'm all for older names but I cant picture an adorable 6 year old girl named Dorothy. All I see are ruby slipperers and grandmas. My grandmother is Doris and I feel the same way about her name (well, minus the ruby slippers).
What about Dora? I don't know about you but when I pronounce Dorothy, I say it like Dorathy. Dora could be a great compromise. It's pretty damn close to Nora, it will remind you of your grandmother and it's cute!
It reminds me of Golden Girls... how's that for a "grandmother" name?
But really, I think the nicknames make it cute for a little girl, and if she chooses, she can use her full name when she's older. So if you love it, go for it!
However, I adore Claire and plan to name my daughter that if I ever have one :)
@UpstateCait: I forgot about Dora! I think FI said he didn't like it, but he also said he didn't like Claire the first time I brought it up. He later came up with it himself and said he liked it.
Would you consider an alternate form of Dorothy that would still honor your grandmother, but perhaps flow better for you? You could use Dora, Dorothea, Doreen, Theodora?
Dorothy just feels like a very old lady name to me. I'm not a fan as a first name but I do like the sentiment of using it for a middle name.
I love the name Claire though!
I like Dorothy. You can always call her by a nickname until she's old enough to decide what to be called. Or you can make that the middle name.
I'm trying to come up with some first names that would flow with Dorothy as the middle name. What do you think of these?
@Mrs.KMM: Oh thanks! I really like Eliza!!
It's curious that most of the names you came up with have three syllables. I wonder if that's what makes them flow better? Might have to look more into that.
I Like Dorothy, especially since it's your gma's name, but I like old-fashion names. But if you want to modernize it, I really like @Neva: suggestion of Dorthea. I like Violet Dorthea
I love the idea of honoring your grandmother (I'm named after my grandmother!), but I think Dorothy sounds old-fashioned... I do like the suggestions of Dora and Dori:)
@Crabbabs: I was actually just going to say three syllable names would work well with Dorothy for the middle name! Mostly because my daughter's name has three syllables and I think it works. (PM me if you want the name, I don't like to put her name on WB since blogging makes me less anonymous.)
I love the name Dorothy. It's time for a comeback in my opinion.
Oh, and there is no way I could name my daughter Dora right now with Dora the Explorer. My mom has a Diego in her class at school and the kids sing the Diego theme song to him all the time!
@cannon: Duh! That's why my FI didn't like it. I totally forgot about Dora the Explorer!
I don't really like Dorothy either, I just can't picture a young girl being called that.
I love Dorothy; it was my grandma's name, too. :) Personally, our daughter has an old-fashioned name, but right now we call her by a very young-sounding nickname. I figure she has plenty of time to mature into her "grown up" name, and until then, we'll just keep calling her by her nickname. Best of both worlds!
Not a fan...sorry. My next door neighbor's name was Dorothy when I was growing up, and her nickname was Dotsy...it stuck forever. Kinda weird seeing her now as a 50 something with such a silly name.
I like Dorothea and you could still use Dot or Dottie.
But . . . I would avoid anything like Violet Dorothea/Dorothy. Then her first initials would be V.D. and it wouldn't take long for kids to figure that out.
I also like Theodora - turning the name around so it still has meaning but might be something you like more. And if you have a boy, you could still use Theodore.
Thanks so much for everyone's input!
I’m really liking the Eliza Dorothy combo. And, because I don’t particularly like Ellie or Liz/Lizzie as nicknames for Eliza we could call her Dot or Dori as a nickname. If we have two girls, we’ll probably go with Nora(h) Claire.
My mom's name was Dorothy, she passed away a while ago. Mom was named after her aunt, that lived with her. My aunt went by Dot and my mom growing up was Little Dot...Dot & little Dot ... yuck, She also hated Dottie, or Dora. She stuck with Dorothy.
She forbade anyone to name their kids using her first name, she threatened to come back and haunt us! I plan, if we are lucky enough to have a daughter, to name her Isadora, incorporating some of the Dorothy in there, and I think it's different enough were she won't come haunting lol
So here is a crazy idea for you.... I know of someone who has a child named "Daralee" or " Dara Lee" no clue who she spells it but how about a spin on Dorothy to "Dora Thee"????? Since differernt spellings and spin offs are en vogue.
I don't mind it... I think for the sentimental reasons you mentioned I would definitely be inclined to have it as a middle name. But I just think of a) the wizard of oz (not a bad thing) and b) Dot Cotton - a character in a British soap (not great); thats one too many associations for me.
