Now that it’s getting dark and cold out, the last thing I want to do is walk to the gym when I get home from work. (Mornings don’t work for me because the gym doesn’t open early enough, and I can’t/wouldn’t go during lunch).
When I get to my apartment from the train, I end up plopping on my bed, turning on E! News and oinking out. I used to be so in shape in college, and now I’m ten pounds heavier and LAZY.
Any tips? 🙂

@chicagoworkinggirl: I can NOT go home first. If my butt hits that couch it’s game over. “No sitting before sweating”. I have to take a gym bag and skip going home first.

Almost everyone I know that works out after work goes directly to the gym. I do have a friend who lays her gym clothes out on her bed and puts her shoes out and stuff so as soon as she gets home, it’s in her face and she has to actively avoid it and put it away, which makes it much harder to say no.

I drink a cup of coffee ~45 minutes beforehand (lots of research shows that caffeine = longer or better workout) and go straight to the gym BEFORE going home. Once I get home, the couch and kittens and wine and husband definitely kill my motivation.

@chicagoworkinggirl: I ditto what Mars62312 said.. If you can avoid going home, that’s the way to do it. If you can’t, maybe have your bag ready and go in and out. Dont even look around 😉
Props to you though. By the end of the day, the gym is the LAST thing on my mind!

@chicagoworkinggirl: Don’t go home first – bring your gym clothes with you to work, change at work, and head straight to the gym!

Just workout at home. YouTube has lots of exercise videos. I recommend the BeFit channel.
If you absolutely have to go to the gym then what the other commenters advise is perfect. Go straight to the gym.

@chicagoworkinggirl: My motivation is TV. Yup. I’m a TV fiend and I love watching entire series on Netflix. So I take my iPad to the gym, connect to the wifi, and watch while I bike/run/walk/whatever. I am NOT allowed to watch at home, so if I want to see what happens next I have to get my butt to the gym. It also gives me a chance to watch the girly shows that FI hates. Even on the days I start making excuses, and think about just going home, I consider exactly what I’d be doing if I went straight home from work — still watching TV, but sitting on my ass while doing it. Generally that makes me feel guilty enough that I wind up on the treadmill.

I can’t go home first. It NEVER works. I also sign up for classes, so it gives me a reason to show up.

DONT GO HOME! same here. i will lay down if i go home. luckily my gym is down the street from work so i have to go right away.when you do go right after it saves so much time. by the time you get home you feel great!!
other days i have class hours after i get off and it takes a little bit but then ill go on a monday and thursday night to those since its football. lol not that i dont like football but theres always all day sunday to tune in. Some times i do go home and without DH (if hes working on a project) i feel bored and end up doing something. Today im going to try to go to swim at 8 😛 so late but i really need to swim. if i just get there i keep telling myself. if i just get there!

I HAVE to go to the gym in the morning. I just don’t work out well at night!
But I agree with PPs–Go straight from work to the gym!

I go home first, but I don’t sit down. I go in, change, say hi to the kitties and leave! It’s hard sometimes, but so worth it!

I say to myself that a 45min-60min workout is only ~3-4% of your day, so I have no excuses

@chicagoworkinggirl: I come home (let the dog out) & immediately jump into my workout clothes & shoes and get right back in the car to the gym!
