We take classes (sushi, I do photography, we attend lectures together). Also, we do meetup.com stuff to find hiking buddies and stuff (I also have a group of people I shoot photos with that I found that way). Most of my grad school friends left Boston when they got jobs, and my husband is in that same boat. We’re getting ready to move to the Bay Area, so we’ll have to start the process all over again. I think we might try volunteering there, too. Seems like that would be a good way to meet local people as well.

Darling Husband and I talk about this all time. How do we find “our couple”? lol. Our best couple friends both recently moved one to Kentucky and the other to Georgia. It’s tough having to start fresh. It’s much easier when you’re younger I think.

I have great co-workers, but I also think volunteering is a great way to meet people.  Darling Husband is probably THE most outgoing person I have ever met, so we meet people because he just talks to absolutely everyone about anything!  Sometimes it’s just about being friendly and outgoing!

@jindc: I’m really awkward at that too…lol but my fiance says you should just find out what their interests are and then say something like “I love paintball too! We should go sometime” or something similar

I feel like we have been really lucky. Darling Husband didnt know anyone when we moved to the DC area (NoVA) 3 years ago. Since then he has become really good friends with 2 of his coworkers. And we have gone on double dates with one of his coworkers and his fiancee a bunch of times. I grew up in Maryland and I have several friends that moved to NoVA after college. THen DHs 2 friends from his childhood moved up to NoVA so we have just hung out with them and I have become close friends with one of their fiancees. I have also made friends through work. I always think about how if we moved away we would have to make new friends and it would be hard. I think I would try to find friends through my work. I might also try to go to the dog park, take a class that interests me or use Meetup.com. Or, if I was on weddingbee and had the time I would go to a meetup from weddingbee and try to become friends with some girls from there!

You might try signing up for thingstododc.  You get emails with organized outings, embassy nights, scavenger hunts… it’s all lots of fun stuff.  I like to go to the embassy nights with my sisters and friends–last one was the Embassy of New Zealand for a luau.  People who go to these events are all open to meeting new people.

We met our married friends through church- there was group for our “type” (nearly/”young” married without children). I got the impression that when Future Father-In-Law was stationed at the Pentagon they made friends with civil service people who were less likely to be transferred- or just risk not having close friends long term and be friends with military personal who will get a new assignment in a few years.

That being said- it was kind of awkward to make friends with our group from church but we sucked it up through a couple awkward outings and now have 12 people we wish we could invite to the wedding if room existed.
