Some keys are to use quality coffee and then to brew double strength. If you brew it hot coffee strength and then dilute it with ice, it’ll be really watery. If I’m making it from coffee beans, I usually buy the Starbucks iced coffee blend, which used to be Gazebo, I think.

Honestly, though, I usually make mine with espresso. I brew the espresso over sugar to melt the sugar and then add ice and a super small splash milk and shake, shake, shake.

The Starbucks method since I worked there- Brew to double strength, add ice and refrigerate. To serve, pour over ice. I make a simple syrup of water and melted sugar.

The restaurants use a LOT of ice, which helps.  I use instant coffee (no flames, please, Pilon is excellent and I drink it hot every day, too!) and I stir in the milk, sugar, and water first, then pour that over another glass or thermos full of ice.  Straws make it more fun and more Dunkin-Donuts-y.  Good luck!

@rurahrah:  Oh, yeah, a straw. Makes  a world of difference for some reason!

@limegreenbride:  I got some awesome plastic, reusable, dishwasher safe straws at the Crate and Barrel outlet for like $1.50 for 6. I love those things. Starbucks usually sells them too. I get annoyed with disposable ones… always running out and so much waste.

If I have time, I brew coffee and let it sit for a little bit to cool down.  I then have those plastic ice cubes that you freeze so they don’t melt.  I only use french vanilla creamer in mine.

@limegreenbride:  I got the ice cubes at Bed, Bath, and Beyond.  Now I need to invest in plastic straws because that’s how I drink my water – through a straw.  Can’t believe I never thought of that.

Freeze normal/weak coffee in an ice cube tray.  Then brew your coffee strong (I use my Keurig) and add sugar (simple syrup works well ’cause it dissolves – if you add granulated, add it to the hot coffee).  Pour hot coffee over coffee cubes.  If it ends up too strong use half coffee cubes half ice cubes.  Add cream.  Delish.

Also, my mom showed me a ‘recipe’ she found.  12oz coffee grounds + 7 cups of cold water.  Mix well, let stand (I put in the fridge) for 15-16 hours.  Filter once through cheesecloth, then through coffee filter (will take a while!).  “Brewing” coffee cold makes it not be bitter like when brewed hot.  So so so good for iced coffee.  This makes it really strong – use it half/half with milk or icewater.  I don’t even need sugar in it, but you could add simply syrup.

ETA: I got mine free at a career fair, but I love the double-walled plastic cups with screw-on lids and straws, it’s perfect for iced coffee!
