lmao. i've been wondering the same thing. though my dress isn't that TOO big, but still... how??!
2dBride had an awesome post about that here: http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/psa-peeing-while-wearing-your-dress
heh.... having been in a few weddings as a bridesmaid before I have witnessed just exactly how the bride uses the bathroom... (or at least a bride with a ballgown...)
she takes a couple of friends with her in the stall to hold her dress up for her so it doesn't somehow end up in the toilet... and often this means the bathroom stall door is hanging open so everyone can fit in...
it's not pretty but its necessary to keep your dress from getting wet or dirty...
I forget where I read this, but I heard it's good to enlist a good friend or mom, sister, etc. to help you. Ditto on the stuff from glowawber/2dBride above, and also (if you're comfortable with it): have your helper enter the stall first, then you enter. Your helper will hitch up the skirt while you do your business, and I think you get the picture from there. Heehee!
BACKWARDS!!
Seriously! Face towards the toilet instead of away, it's soooo much easier, it totally removes the train issue.
I've been a bridesmaid too many times to count. Usually the bride backs into the handicapped stall and a couple of people hold the back of the dress up over her head.
like texasmeredith I've done the bridesmaid thing 7 times....and it's typically involved holding a dress so someone can pee. I had my MOH help me once, and decided it was crazy to need to pull someone else away from the fun, so I figured out the same thing 2Dbride did, and it worked like a charm the remainder of the evening!
In addition to having a friend hold up the back of my dress, I found her help invaluable in being able to reach the toilet paper! In a ball gown, you're not exactly showing off anything to the friend helping. I did go successfully by myself at our hotel before I took off my dress, but I'd enlist help while it's around!
I know this is awful .... but seriously pee in a cup (in the bathroom of course .. alone) hahaha. just kidding ...
Seriously

I didn't have a big ball gown, but after the ceremony and pictures, I took a potty break and took my dress completely off! Thankfully it was easy to take on/off, not a lot of buttons or anything. Then I didn't go again until the end of the night.
the backwards thing worked like a charm for me. I didn't need anyone's help!
Seriously, it sounds rediculous, but if you don't want the hassle (or embarassment) of having "assistance" just straddle the toilet face first! My make-up artist told me that little gem right before I walked down the aisle, and I have to say it was one of the BEST pieces of advice I got! Not only was it SO easy, but those two minutes alone in the stall are the only moments you actually get to collect your thoughts.
My friend came in the stall with me, I took my dress off completly, went to the bathroom while she held it, then put it back on. It was a bonding experience for us and the dress did not get "hurt" in any way!
My sister had a ball gown and when she had to go, one of us went with her. She lifted the front and we grabbed the back while she used the bathroom backwards (i.e. she walked right over the toilet and squatted facing the wall!)-- crazy stuff.... I will think twice before having a dress like that!
OMG that video was hilarious. I have seriously spent some time thinking about this already (and not even yet engaged!). I am a person who has to pee every couple hours anways... especially when I'm excited/nervous... so this would be a BIG issue for me! I decided I simply will. not. buy. a dress I can't pee in alone. This isn't a huge sacrifice because I have no interest in a ball gown or a really big dress. But, just like you should always sit in pants before you buy them... I will definitely be mock-peeing in my dress before I order it jsut to make sure I can!!

This problem kinda bewilders me. I have a ballgown dress. I'll be wearing it for photo sessions that span at least 4 hrs: (getting ready, bridal session, bride& groom session, bridal party session, and ceremony). HOw does one with a ballgown (or any dress with sizable dimensions) travel (e.g. in a vehicle), and use the bathroom?
