I know that it is a good idea to book a florist early, but how far from the ceremony are you placing your final order?

Great question! This is something I wasn't sure about too...I assumed maybe 5-6 months in advance?? I was thinking about looking for florists for my Aug. wedding around March...I'm anxious to see what people say.

Well I got silk flowers cos fresh cymbidium orchids were way beyond my budget. I shopped around and got the wedding party flowers from Bloomed to Last. They were great to work with and the flowers are gorgeous. Plus they will not wilt in the August heat!

I have clients that come to me year ahead and I have some that come to me 2 months or even month ahead!

It all depends what you are expecting, how flexible you are willing to be and what you are comfortable with.

I usually am happiest with 6 months - 3 months  in advance. That gives me enough time to help, without clients being drained already with planning. If I had to recommend, I would say give yourself 5 months.

I decided 5-6 months ahead of time since the flowers helped me define the theme of things.

We decided on the flowers in January/Feb.  We knew exactly what we wanted then and the florist just took payment last week.

I spoke with my florist almost immediately (4ish months out).  However, since our wedding is on a Friday she said I definitely had time to figure out what we wanted.  My assumption is if you speak with your florist, discuss your plans and confirm they can handle your event, you'll have some time to figure out the details.

    Good luck!

We decided 2 months out on the exact flowers that I wanted. She made me a sample centerpiece and bouquet to view/comment and we went ahead from there. They didn't have peonies in April, so she had to use silk for the sample viewing. Most florists don't place orders for what's needed at the wedding until much closer to the date so 2 months should be plenty, but ask your florist - he/she would know best.

I also DIY'd some cocktail hour flowers etc and those I didn't decide on until the day before the wedding when I went to the downtown flowermart. I had an idea of what shades of colors I wanted, but didn't make the decision until I saw what look good that day.

    Have fun!

We booked our florist 8 months out and made our initial order then.  However, we didn't finalize everything until a little over a month before the wedding.  I made tons of changes to the initial order at that time like switching colors and adding a couple arrangements.

I ordered my flowers in March for my September wedding. My flowers are silk, so I have them already.

We already booked the florist and set a proposal.  I'm sure we will meet again regarding details, but we've signed a contract and have most everything picked out.

I made my decisions right at the 3 month mark...I did not consider to be terribly pressing, but it was just convenient to schedule a meeting with my florist at that time.

I met with the florist initially in March for my November wedding, but we're still working out some details. I like to have everything very organized though, so I did as much as I could as early as I could.

We had more or less the floral theme and general design ideas by about 3-4 months beforehand (when we got an initial estimate and placed the deposit).  I saw the mock up 6 weeks before, and we paid a 50% second deposit about 1 month before.  The final, final contract came out last week (though most of the details were finalized at the mock-up).

I think it's good to have a pretty good concept at least a few months in advance.  But you don't want to completely finalize your order until much closer.  My grandparents only decided to come a couple weeks ago, and we did not have final counts for family boutiennieres and corsages until then.  Also, the florist only asked for a final table count (for centerpieces) last week.  It would have been impossible to know that beforehand.

We paid and booked our florest in June, for our October 31st. wedding. I just wanted to get it out of the way. The more I finish the more I don't have to worry about. My goal is to have everything done by October 1st. I just want to be as stress free as possible. I hope this is realistic, I guess I shall see.
