Normally it would depend on location and date of wedding. But it has been known for guests to start reserving rooms as early as 9 months or later especially with wedding season and brides booking their venues/hotels well over a year in advance. Is your wedding going to take place in the same hotel that you reserved the hotel block for? If so, then it makes sense as to why it would fill up so quickly especially for Destination Weddings.
@SimplyUnique021: The wedding is not taking place in the hotel. The hotel is located equally distant between the ceremony location and reception location. Both are walking distance. There are a few other hotels in the town as well as local B&Bs.
Several of our guests are traveling from across the country. And it will be many guests' first time in Maine.
I figured people would book early, just didn't expect them to book as soon as they received the save the date!
We don't have a hotel block since there's such a huge variety of hotels in Carmel and a lot of them are little tiny ones (maybe this is a bad idea, but I got paralyzed with indecision). It seems like right now, 6 1/2 months out people are starting to think about booking rooms, feeling like they should, but not actually getting their act together enough to do it.
I suspect that if we had an actual hotel block we would have some bookings by now.
Wow people did not start reserving rooms til a few months out (like maybe 3 months at most) and then about a week before the wedding is when everyone booked their rooms!
how do you guys know when they book? does the hotel let you know who books and when?
@Ms. Meowerson: Since we reserved the entire hotel (all 36 rooms) the manager sent FI a floor plan. He's also letting us know who booked in what rooms so we know where our bridal party is, where his room should be and mine, etc.
So we just asked them for the room map and list last night (thinking maybe one room had been booked) and were shocked to see how many were booked already. Someone had already booked the room I was planning on using the night before the wedding!
People are already booking rooms for my DW in October. I think once people decide to go, they start booking things.
@Ms. Meowerson: I only know because I have received some emails and calls from people telling me they just booked their rooms.
GOODNESS!! You are lucky! We have blocked rooms and about half are booked. It's like pulling teeth to get people to go ahead and reserve! LOL!
@Donnica22: I'm just happy people are so excited to come! But I'm worried we may have to find another hotel to block too since this one cannot hold all our guests.
Thankfully it's heading into off season so there shouldn't be a ton of tourists.
@SerenaSF: Wow, that's awesome. Guess it's pretty normal then. I love hearing from my guests that they are planning big trips around my wedding. I'm so glad everyone is so excited to come to Maine!
@Entangled: A hotel block would be hard in Carmel. You'd have to reserve 4 or 5 whole hotels with how small they are!
Wow!! Then its definitely a good thing that you reserved the room block when you did. But just to be on the safe side, try and located another hotel close to the one you already have just in case the one hotel does not hold all of your guests.
But look at the bright side, if your guests are booking their hotels as soon as they got the save the dates, then doing the RSVP's should be easy once you send out the invitations!
wow, they are on the ball! i'm standing in a wedding in seattle this july and i still haven't gotten my hotel yet! granted, i'm not staying in the hotel the bride & groom selected since the rates are still too much with their discount rate [but what can you expect during 4th of july weekend?] but as far as i know, only the couple and her parents have booked.
Well, they do say that the early bird catches the worm. Some people will wait until around three months before the exact wedding date to make a reservation. However, like SerenaSF said, once people decide to attend, they will probably take care of all the things they need as early as possible.
It's unavoidable because because the sooner you have planned your budget and schedule, the sooner you can be at ease. I'm saying once you get done with it, all you need to do is wait for the wedding day itself. RIght?
I'm glad to see this! We're doing our e-pics this weekend so we can get our save the dates ordered and sent out in the hope that people get right to booking rooms. There's another event in town that weekend, so I really hope our guests check out the website and book up their rooms quickly so we can expand the block if we have to. You give me hope, @KatNYC2011:!

We just sent out our save the dates 2 weeks ago and our wedding is not until September, however our hotel block is already filling up!
We have blocked an entire hotel for our guests, but now I'm having to ask bridesmaids and groomsmen to reserve now to make sure they get space in the "wedding" hotel!
I never thought people would reserve 7 months out.
How early did people start reserving rooms for your destination weddings?
