I would save up but not really buy anything til about a year out. I had a 2.5 year engagement and changed my mind like a thousand times until closer to our wedding.

Definitely!  I started buying little things for decorations, chargers, table clothes, etc.  I am putting together large plastic tubs so that it will all be ready to go on the day, so there will be no (ok probably less) scrambling around the last few weeks before the wedding!

Buy when you see it on sale or on the clearance rack.  The only reason that I was able to afford alot of things that we did is because I saw things on the clearance racks, or at dollar trees, after christmas sales.  I was smart about it and made a list super early on on exactly what projects that I really wanted to do and the materials needed, that way I didn’t buy too much that I didn’t use.

I’m about 1 year and half out still. I’ve been buys from day one of the engagement. I will DIY everything, so I am picking up stuff as they are on sale, and have started a few time consuming projects. Save receipts tho because I too have change my mind a few times due to getting a different venue then expected.

If you are having a fall theme or color scheme of any sort, it makes sense to be on the lookout for things now, and again in the late fall of 2012 as that is when you will get the best bargains.

After Christmas clearances are also a great shopping time, and since Christmas isn’t standard red and green anymore, you might find what you need.

It also helps to spread the expenses out over time.
