With the holiday season upon us, it's gotten me thinking about the long trip it will be to see our families for Christmas. Both live at least a 10-hour drive away, and I sure do wish they were closer. In the long run we are hoping my husband will be able to get a job in a city closer to where they are.

How far away do your families live? Do you like how close or far they are? What do you consider the optimum distance to live from them? Does proximity to family influence your decision on where to live?

To keep the comparisons between like things, the poll is written in terms of driving time, even though some people might fly rather than drive 6 hours in the car.

All of my immediate and most of my extended family live within a 12 block radius of me. My parents actually live across the street, as to both my grandmothers. It can be fun but it can also be annoying!

If it makes you feel any better, I'm a 12 hour flight away from my parents and my fiance.  Both of our parents are in Hawaii, he's in Seattle, and I'm in Beijing.  What makes it worse is that it's an 18 hour time change difference between Beijing and Hawaii.  Thank goodness for skype!

My husband's parents live 10 minutes from us. It's nice because we can go out to dinner together, get our Christmas trees together, or whatever. My family lives about 9 hours away by car. It's tough because we don't get to see them very often.

Both my family and my fiance's family live 3,000 miles from us.  The good thing is that they live less than an hour drive from each other, so we can go home and visit everyone in the same trip.  We generally fly home for at least a week twice a year - we're really attached to our families and love visiting them, so we're happy to spend our vacations that way, but it is costing us the chance to travel anywhere else.

My fiance is in a PhD program and probably has about 3 years left.  We're both getting pretty attached to the Bay Area, but I suspect that we will end up going back to New York when we're done so that we can be closer to both our families.  My parents might move full time to Florida around then, but I guess at least that's a shorter flight (and an easy way to get out of the cold for a long winter weekend).

FI's mom lives a 5 minute walk from us, which is too close. LOL. The rest of our immediate family is within 30 minutes or so. It's quite nice.

My family are 3000 miles away - they're in CT and I'm in Ireland.  NOT fun.
My in-laws are about 4 minutes' drive away.  Luckily we get along!!!

My FI's parents live about 15-20 minutes away by car, so we can see them quite a bit.  My Mom, Step-dad, and three youngest siblings live about 14 hours away by car, my Dad lives in Louisiana (which would be too far for us to drive), and my other sister lives in Napa, CA and would be way too far to drive!

My family all moved away this summer, so this will be the first time that we will be travelling for the holidays.  We will be going to NC for Christmas to spend it with my family.

Mrs.KMM    July 17, 2010   Atlanta, GA (wedding in Indianapolis, IN)

My family is a 16 hour drive away from us (we drove to and from the wedding but we'll always fly for any other trip).  DH's family is a 13 hour drive away from us.  And both families are a 12 hour drive away from each other.

Honestly, at this point in our lives, I really don't mind.  Once we have kids, I'd like to be closer to family so that they can see their grandparents more but since I went 12 hours away from home for college, I'm used to being long distance from my family.

And for me, about a 6 hour drive is the max I'd do very often without just getting plane tickets.

This is certainly a frequent topic during the holiday season. Last year we were engaged and couldn't decide what to do, so we each went to our own family's house for Christmas. This year we're married and it was important for us to be together. We spent thanksgiving at my in law's (3 hr drive), and we'll be doing Christmas at my parents' house (12 hr drive). It's certainly hard, and visiting my family takes much more planning since it's either a long car ride or an expensive flight and boarding for our 2 dogs.

    I voted:

my family lives 1-2 hours by car (they live almost exactly 2 hrs north of us)

his family lives 3-4 hours by car (FI's dad/step mom live about 3ish hours by car)

his family lives 7-12 hours by car (FI's mom/step dad live about 10-12 hrs away depending on traffic... but really we would never drive to see them we just fly when we want to go)

FI and I live smack dab between both of our parents. My parents are 25 minutes away and his are about 20. The only family members that don't live within a 30 mile radius are our grandmothers (mines in Florida, his is in northern NY) and his uncles family (Maryland).

I love having everyone so close. When we need them, they're there but when we would prefer not to see or speak to them for a week or two, we're far enough away to where no-one drops in.

For us, our current proximity is perfect. We're able to split time between both families for every holiday/birthday. After our wedding we're planning on moving to the West Coast for a few years. I imagine this will be VERY hard on me. I like having my family only a short drive away.

Both of our families are over 2000 miles away and unfortunately that is a good thing.  (As in- it would be nice if we had healthy families we wanted to be close to. :)

Currently, my parents are 2 hours away from me, and I am 3 hours away from FIs family. Once I am married and relocated, I will still be 2 hours away from my parents but only 30 minutes away from FIs dad. We plan to visit both sets of relatives during the holidays although not on Christmas.

Both mine and my husbands family live too far to drive.  They are both about a 4 hour flight from where we now live. We live in TX they live in NY.  We used to live driving distance from both familys and we saw them all the time (5 and 7 hours drives) and by the end of that I sure did hate that drive! I wish that both sets of family was closer but oh well, we like it here and dont want to move back to our home state!

My parents are 45 north of us, which is nice because its close enough to drive to see them if I want, but far enough that they are not over every day :-D

My husband's mom lives in La Jolla, CA and his dad/stepmom live in Long Beach, CA - so they are both about 3,000 miles and a good plane ride away from us.

Well my Dad lives with us, and my brother and his family are nine miles away. FI's family is 5 miles away, with only his brother a significant distance away - 120 miles. So why don't you have a 'Not bloody far enough' option lol?!!

Ah we do get on well with everyone, but I have to say it was nice when we lived (100miles) too far away for 'Could you come in and have a look at....' phone calls...

My partner's father (and most of the paternal side of the fam) live about 2.5 hours away. His Mother, brother (and the majority of the maternal side of the fam) live over 20+hours away--so we barely get to see them. :(

My parents & brother live about3.5-4hours away by car, my sister lives on the west coast, which is more like 30(driving) hours away, which is super duper suck-tastic. The rest of my family is scattered across the country, but are generally about 20+ hours away (though there are a few aunts, uncles & my grandparents that live in the same town as my parents).
