We've FINALLY decided on Costa Rica for our honeymoon but I'm getting conflicting opinions on when to book it. I'm kinda of the mindset to book it so I don't have to worry about it and my family keeps telling me to wait til closer to the date to get a better deal.

What did you do? When did you book your honeymoon?

Well, the flights can sometimes get more expensive when you get close to the date of your trip.  I booked a trip to Costa Rica about 4 weeks before I went (my husband and I had only been dating a few months, so it was a big step and we waited until we were sure that we were ready).  Everything worked out fine, but I'm not sure you would want to take any risks with your honeymoon.  Are there any special tours you want to do that might book up fast?  Any hotels you would be sad if they booked up?

We booked ours about 6 months in advance.  Actually, our travel agency reimburses us if the price goes down on the trip.  I think that deal comes with the optional trip insurance.  I'd ask about that, because then you benefit from getting it booked and out of the way, but you're reimbursed if a better deal comes along in terms of your flight or resort rate.

So far, the price of our trip has actually increased, so I'm glad we booked it when we did.

@ Professor Bee - Ya, there is a few hotels we'd really like to go to. It's the off season in Costa Rica so I don't know if things will get super booked up, but I don't know that I'm willing to risk it either way.

@BlueShoes2 - I'll definitely look into that! Sounds like a great deal :)

We decided in January but had to wait for the government to send us our tax returns to book it, so just did that last week!  We were watching prices and they stayed about the same for teh past three months, and I think we were right around the border for when things start to go up (all-inclusive in Mexico).  I was getting anxious, but it turned out ok :)

Fiance booked ours about 3 months out, though he started researching much earlier.  He held off buying the airfare for a while, hoping the price would go down but instead it just kept going up so he finally gave up and just bought it at the price it was 2 months out.  I find there's no hard and fast way to predict the pricing whims of the travel industry.

We finally booked our honeymoon like a week ago two months away from my wedding date! I'm so happy! We're going to Hawaii! We did notice that the flight prices raised from a few months ago. So I say book it the sooner the better!

Hi there! You shouldn't have a major problem in the rainy season in Costa Rica.  If there are certain hotels you really want to go to, why not call them/e-mail them and ask how their bookings are looking? We're going there for about 10 days as part of our honeymoon, and we actualy booked things in stages based on what was likely to lose availablility... the VRBO rental we wanted was booked first, then a month later the flights, then the hotel in San Jose a bit after than, and finally the 4x4 rental this week.

We booked our honeymoon in January and we are going at the end of August. We just did it early so that we could pay some then and pay some more later instead of paying it all at once. I think if we had waited we wouldn't have gotten as good of a deal...but I dont think you necessarily have to do it that far in advance. Maybe call a travel agent and see what they suggest?

We are getting married in late August but because of my school schedule/FH's amount of leave needed, we aren't going on our "big" honeymoon until the beginning of January.  We decided on a Caribbean cruise embarking from San Juan, Puerto Rico!  :)  Sooo excited...we already booked the cruise last month and have most of it paid off, but we're holding off on plane fare to see if it drops a little....it's like 8 months away, so it probably will!

If you're worried about the plane fares jumping on ya I'd suggest using kayak.com and sticking a fare tracker on the dates you want...you can be alerted weekly or even daily about what the best fares are and what they were the weeks/months prior.  :)

We're are waiting until at least 6 months or more out but we won't pay the trip in full because if the price goes down between then and the honeymoon, we get the lower price. I would say book as far as you can out so you get the best deals and the room/views that you want! Check with travel agents to see if they do that but I konw for sure that Sandals does that because that's the route we are going!

Our wedding is July but we are not even close to booking it.. our travel agent told us that it really does not matter when you book it- if its not a holiday week the price will not make any difference (or significant difference). Hope he is right cause we are not even sure where we are gonna go.. yikes..

We haven't booked anything yet, but I think we'll be booking the hotel we want to stay at in Seattle pretty soon so that it'll be a for sure thing and then I'll be contacting the condo on the coast within the next month or two to see if we can reserve the place we want before either of us turns 21 (2 months pre-wedding) as one of us WILL be 21 at the time of the honeymoon. If not, I don't know what we'll do for sure...

@Lonniebunny - it depends where you decide to go...for us, we're going on a cruise so there was a discounted price if you book early enough.

We booked ours as soon as we knew where we wanted to go. Mainly because we knew that we'd get better deals on flights. It ended up being around 10 months out, but it did help that I know where we're going fairly well so I knew the types of things to look for in hotels and the like. We're doing 8 nights in Cairns and 5 nights in Sydney, Australia.

We booked the first part of our honeymoon (Vermont) about nine months out because we wanted a specific room at our inn. But, we also traveled to NYC for a couple days, and we waited until about four months out to book because we found a great deal online. We were worried other, better deals would come along two months prior, but for my own peace of mind, I needed to have that hotel room booked! :)

I self-booked via the internet.  I found that the hotel prices did not fluctuate at all.  The airline prices went up and down, but hit the lowest price around 6 weeks prior consistently.  So now I always book my flights 6 weeks out.  For our activities, the prices were not negotiable anyway, so I booked them 4 months out.  I booked our rental car on Hotwire 6 weeks out and got a great deal.  Our honeymoon was in Hawaii.

@littlemissmoo-  We are going to Cairns and Sydney too.  But only spending a day and a half in each city.  Going to Cairns because that is where all the dive boats leave to go to the reef for scuba diving.  We will be spending 4 days on a boat.

We booked our trip to Maui in February. I just found that the air fare went down $300! Luckily we went through AAA so they are making the adjustment for us. I would say to do it about 2-3 months in advance.

Let's see, wedding is this Saturday, we booked our trip to Mexico last Monday.  Not really winging it, we knew this is what we wanted to do, but my FI really knows how to procrastinate.  I wasn't very happy, but I knew we could always road trip if he didn't book anything, so I didn't worry too much about it.

Edit: Wedding is this Saturday, we're leaving for our honeymoon next Monday.  So we booked two weeks before leaving.
