    Hi all-

I saw that Kleinfeld's is having a sample sale in NYC the same weekend a designer I love is having a trunk show! I want to go shopping that weekend, but I  have no date or place picked.

Does that typically dictate the type of dress you buy, or does the place not matter because the dress is so special on its own, it doesn’t need to compliment the place. (im also looking a relatively similar places, hotels, restaurants, etc i won’t be like formal ballroom vs outdoor wedding).

Is it ever too soon to buy or shop for a dress?

Hmmm I guess it depends on how long it will take to get a dress in.  Some dresses take 6 to 10 months just to come in from the designer.  If you are buying from the rack you have more than enough time.  I would definitely go and see if you see anything that you absolutely love. If so, then go for it! If you have any doubts then I would wait, no  matter how good of a deal it is.

I personally don't think that a venue should ever dictate what a bride should wear. If you want to wear the biggest poofiest ballgown you find to a wedding you're having in the middle of a muddy field I think you should do it. But I do think that if you don't have a date picked then it's hard to say. I see your WB profile says a date in Sept '11. If you're looking to get married then I think it's fine to go shop - it's unlikely your tastes will change. But if you're looking at 18 months or more out then I just worry that your tastes will change and you'll find yourself with a dress you hate.

For reference I bought my dress 9 months out.

@littlemissmoo I am definitly doing Sept 2011 or July 2011 so I doubt that my tastes will change.

@crebre80 Really? It could take 10 months to get a dress in?? I better get on it then!

4-6 months is a much more common wait time. The other thing to keep in mind is that a lot of times the dresses they show you at trunk shows are for next season and may not be in production yet. Just something to ask about while you're shopping.

When is Kleinfeld's sample sale? I'm starting to look for dresses in 2 weeks for my Sept 24th, 2011 wedding but I doubt I'll find something quickly.

@DashingBride: If you are going custom and couture absolutely.  You also have to factor in fittings, etc. I always say the earlier the better, but remember in January a lot of the stores are ridding themselves of the previous years dresses in an effort to accommodate the Spring lines.

@KatNYC2011: AHA thank you for figuring it out for me!! It is November 7th, I got an email because I am also a member of theknot.com The email said it is for knot.com members only.  That same weekend is a Lazaro trunk show, and I really love his dresses, from what I have seen.

yeah I agree 4-6 months is the regular wait time and most dresses i've heard about come in less than 4 months. I've never heard of a dress taking takin 10 months to arrive. but then once u receive the dress it can take another month or so to complete the alterations depending on the place where you get it done
