@red_rose:  As someone pregnant with their third child, I’d drive as far as it took for a great hospital.  No doubt.

I was just thinking about this today for some odd reason (I’m not pregnant). I think anything under an hour would be fine.

i want to keep it within 45mins-an hour which is basically how far pretty much all the hospitals are (some further, a few birthing centres nearer but i prefer a hospital)

Well I dove 100 miles by myself while in labor, so that was 1.5 hours due to my DH and my hospital were at home and I wasn’t at the time.

Not far, the first hospital, because I’d have the baby in the car!  I was in the hospital less than 4 hours with my first, just over an hour with my 2nd.  I wouldn’t chance going any further than possible if I were to have another, lol.

We will be driving about 45-60 min. to have a birth center birth rather than be in a hospital.

ETA: It depends a lot on how you define “better.” Many people assume “more high-tech” = “better,” whereas others see “more high tech” = “higher intervention rates and more restrictive policies on labor management,” which = NOT better. Also, the individual care provider you’re working with matters at least as much as which hospital you’re in.

Ideally I would have an home birth like I am planning.

With our first we drove 20 minutes to the hospital, water broke 5 minutes after we arrived and DD was born 30 minutes after that. I’d like to avoid that stress again.

If it meant a better hospital I would drive up to 30 mins, which is what I did a couple of weeks ago. It still wasn’t easy because my contractions were intense, but it was worth the trip because I delivered at one of the best hospitals in the country.

I live smack in the middle of San Fran Bay Area, so there are a lot of amazing hospitals all the same distance away. I’m lucky that I don’t have to make that choice!

I have to drive 45 min to my hospital. I will do it though because I love the doctor I have and that’s the only hospital he delivers at.

lik KC, I’m driving about 45 minutes (during good traffic) for a birth center.  Traffic’s almost always good in that direction though.  My luck and it’ll be an accident that day.
