My baby is 7 weeks old today, and he has already outgrown some of the 0-3 month stuff (some of the Carter stuff is made small). However, he still fits into some of the NB stuff (which was too big when he actually was a newborn). He is not big enough for any of the 3-6 month stuff yet so I actually have to go out now (since the weather is changing) and buy him a few more 0-3 month outfits. Basically, it all depends on how quickly your little one grows and on the make of the clothing. Unfortunately there's no telling until you have your little one. My little guy lives in sleepers when we are at home though. I do put him in proper outfits when we go out though (usually). So, I would suggest getting some sleepers in 0-3 month size (non-expensive ones though since a) they will grow out of them fairly quickly and b) if they happen to explode out of their diaper there is a good chance they will get stained).
Sorry, I realize this post is all over the place, but hopefully it helps you out a little bit!
All the best :)
I think part of it will depend on how big your baby is at birth. If you have a smaller baby, he/she may need to wear smaller sizes for a while; if you have a bigger baby, he/she may outgrow the smaller sizes really quickly, or even skip newborn sizes altogether.
My favorite newborn clothing was the one piece sleep n' play outfits. Those are great because they're super convenient and cozy, but also because newborns can wear them in a larger size by just rolling up the sleeves. You could buy a couple packages of those in the 0-3 months size, and it would probably fit from a few days old to a few months old!
Fwiw, Addie was a small baby (6 lbs, 7 oz at birth) and she couldn't wear 0-3 months clothing until she was a month old. Actually, she didn't wear some of her 0-3 months clothing until she was 3 months because different brands run bigger or smaller than others.
7.6 at birth, 6 weeks now
NB onsies fit for a good 4 weeks
NB sleep & play's still fit
0-3 month onsies are still big. by no means do they "fit"
0-3 month pants are big
Unless he grows length wise (and he's long) a lot I don't see him "fitting" in the 3-6 month stuff until well after Christmas. We also live in the footed sleep & plays. That and footed pants. I love footed pants.
My daughter is 8 weeks old and is just now fitting into the 0-3 month clothes. Definately needed some newbron stuff for those first few weeks. But I only bought a few and washed them frequently.
Just going off memory - I think newborn I have 3 gowns, 1 sack sleeper and probably 5 onsies white onsies and 5 onsies that can be used as an outfit. But all but the gowns are short sleeved and she's due in December. My 0-3 selection is only slightly larger.
How many onsies did you guys buy? They're great for layering, but I don't know how many to get.
All I can see is $$ signs right now!!
Personally, I hated onesies until Addie was about a month or older. I was so afraid of putting anything over her little head! After that, we usually only used onesies for bedtime because I felt like matching shirt/pant sets were so much more convenient for diaper changes.
The short-sleeved clothes for winter aren't necessarily a bad thing as many babies like to be swaddled constantly at the newborn stage. As long as you have your baby wrapped up with a hat on and the heat on in the house at a comfortable temperature, you should be fine.
Lastly, you can get super cheap packs of onesies, sleep n' play outfits, etc... at Wal-Mart, K-Mart or Target. I think Gerber sells 5 packs of onesies and 3 packs of sleep n' plays for $5 at my local K-Mart. So you definitely don't have to spend a lot to stock up on some of the essentials!
my son was 6 lbs 15 oz at birth, he's 13 weeks now
NB until 4 weeks
0-3 until around 8-10 weeks; also started wearing 3-6 towards the end of that range
can still fit some 3-6 stuff, but fits 6 best. still fits 3 month sleepers. 6-9 months is too big though.
steer clear from too much nb stuff. it doesn't last long at all! it looks like my soon will spend the most time in 6 or 6-9 month stuff so far....
You really can't tell until your little one gets here... god willing, you'll make it till your due date, but anything can happen! My son was born 2 weeks early (after 5 wks bedrest for preterm labor scares, yuck) and was 7lbs4oz at birth but dropped to 6lbs9oz in the hospital. He was in 0-3 mos tops for about 3 months (big head meant going to the next size up sooner than the rest of his body was ready for) and bottoms for almost 6 months. He's still been consistently in the age appropriate bottoms size about 6 months longer than the tags say. Stock up on plain cheapo onesies and play clothes/PJs from craigslist or walmart and then you won't feel bad if they don't get used. Plus, you can always sell them on CL later.
My newborn has been living in these, diapers, and swaddling blankets:

Once her belly button stump falls off, she'll be living in these for a while:

It just makes diaper changing easier.
really stupid question - and I'm due the same time as Tisty:
what are sleep and plays?
boy, am I in trouble or what?? lol
@rachiecakes: One-piece outfit that they can sleep and crawl around in so kind of like onesies with full sleeves.
@rachiecakes: I was thinking the same thing! I was just gonna go to the store and hope the package said that on it :)
Lol, sleep n' plays are like these:
Some people call them footie pajamas, too.
@Mrs. Spring: oh! I just always called them sleepers or pj's. Phew! I'm not totally out of the loop then
@Tisty1982: Different names, same thing. :) See, you're more prepared than you thought!
@Titsy thank you for asking....i am due around the same time as you are and my baby is measuring up to be a bigger baby, so i went and took all new newborn stuff back and just kept the 0-3, not a lot, but enough to get through couple days and then i can wash :)
Everyone thank you for all the advice :)
I had a big baby (9.7) and she wore a few NB sleepers and outfits for the first three weeks or so. After that she was in 0-3M stuff until she was about 12lbs at 6-8 weeks. A lot of the footed sleepers she outgrew around 6 weeks, other stuff like onsies she was in until 8 weeks. She is now ten weeks old and almost 14lbs (95 percentile so there is a very little chance that your baby would be bigger than her) and we are just now really getting to 3-6M stuff. We also were I size 1 diapers until about 6 weeks when we switched to the 1-2 size. Now at 10 weeks she is ready for the size 2 diapers.
Baby Bear was 8lbs 7oz at birth.
She weighs 11lbs8oz now, at 2 months.
She was out of NB at about 3 wks, had to give them away to another pregnant friend.LOL She wears 0 to 3 months, more on the 3 months side. I also registered for 0 to 3 months clothes that I didn't get a lot of. No one likes to buy gender neutral clothes.LOL
I'd go for buying more 0 to 3 months. as far as diapers, at least 2 packs of NB for the stump. My baby's didn't call off for 3 wks, long time for some.lol
One more thing... My baby is growing like a weed. She was born 8 lb 8 oz and at her one-month pediatrician visit she was already 12 lb 3 oz. She's in the 99th percentile for weight, and 98th percentile for length and head circumference. She never wore her NB clothes and she's not far from outgrowing her 3-month clothes. I bet she'll be in 6-month clothes by Christmas.
I'm breastfeeding exclusively on demand, and from my understanding you can't overfeed a breastfed baby. But, sometimes formula-fed babies gain faster. I would say get a small amount of each size since there are so many variables to consider.
my oldest daughter was in 0-3 six weeks and never fit in NB. My youngest wore NB for 2 months and 0-3 five months. It varies child to child.
Now that I'm actually shopping for baby clothes, I'd love to hear more about specific brands. For instance, which ones run big or small.
You all have been such a help and I've bookmarked this thread for sometime now, and I'm glad I can finally put it to use! *fingers crossed all continues smoothly*

Here's my experience in brands:
Gerber - runs small
Carter - about true to size
Baby Gap - has really weird sizing (like 6-12 months, instead of 6, months, 9 months, and 12 months), so they fit better towards the end of the recommended sizing
Old Navy - runs a little large
Circo - runs large and a little wide
Granimals - runs large
Of course, it all depends on your baby. He/she could be big for his/her age and be wearing one size of one brand and a different size in another brand. So you really never know until he/she gets here. :)

So I'm trying to make sure I have everything ready for when our baby is born (only 8 weeks to go!!) My biggest problem right now is I don't know how much of different size clothes I will need. I don't have very many newborn or 0-3 months clothes. Once we get to the 3-6 month range I have a ton, but I don't know how fast she'll grow into those.
How long did your baby fit in newborn and 0-3 month? I obviously want her to have enough clothes, but don't want to buy a bunch of stuff that she's never gonna fit in long enough to wear.
