I’m curious to know the “average” amount of time that elapses between a couple’s engagement and the marriage. I’m 20 and envision myself getting engaged in the next year or two, but I want to wait 2 years to get married after that. Everyone says I’m crazy.
So how long was it for you?

@Meglin: I am 24, FI is almost 26. We will be waiting a little under 2 years. He is working on his Ph.D., we need to pay off student loans, save for the wedding, etc. We’ve been together over 5 years now, we’re not super rushed.
ETA: I would wait two years if I were 20, especially. Don’t let other people tell you what to do.. you do what is right for your relationship. And don’t worry, my mom wants to know why it’s not happening next year, too!

Our engagement will total 33 months. Money and family issues were the main reasons.
We got a lot of flack for this long engagement (insinuations that we weren’t serious about each other, etc.) but honestly it’s been a blessing. I am an anxious person and I like planning things WAY in advance so I’m very thankful. The long engagement has given me to ability to take a break when things get overwhelming.
It’s also given us time for both of us to get better jobs and look for a house.

- Wedding: October 2011 - Bed & Breakfast
We had a year long engagement, but honestly we seriously considered saying “screw the wedding” and getting hitched only 3 months after getting engaged. We were just so excited to be married already and wanted it so badly. But we didn’t, and the year long wait wasn’t so bad afterall.

@Stace126: Money and planning are the very reasons I would need at least two years before the wedding lol. I am a crazy perfectionist and would hate to settle on anything less than perfection just so people can stop saying I’m crazy. 😛

Ours will be 14 months total. We wanted it in the summer or fall so it just happened to be 14 months till we would get the right date.

I can’t imagine having a long engagement! We’ve only been engaged for a month and a half and we’re already getting antsy. We’re thinking about May, but we might move it up 🙂

@MadTownGirl: Not really, but with a little luck, a very focus and concentrated must have list we had a lovely wedding for about $1,000 and a Fijian honeymoon for $12,000….neither of which I would change a single thing about.
