I have been with my SO for 8 years. We started dating in high school and we are now in our mid twenties. We just recently moved in together now that we are financially stable. Last Sunday (June 29th), he took me to go looking at rings so he can have an idea on what I like. We are going away on a two week vacation in August to Europe. I was wondering whether he would propose on this trip or not. I don’t want to get my hopes up and be disappointed if he doesn’t do it on this trip. My friends/family thinks he definitely is going to do it on the trip, especially since he took me to look at rings. I feel like he won’t propose on this trip because the trip is just a month away and I feed like that is not enough time for him to go shopping for, pick out, and purcahse a ring. I don’t understand why he would bring me to look at rings NOW if he wasn’t planning on proposing any time soon. Do you think he plans on doing it soon-on the trip specifically?
For those who went “ring shopping”, how long after did he propose?
How can I NOT get my hopes up if he doesn’t propose on our vacation?
Thanks for any advice!

My boyfriend took me ring shopping nearly 2 years ago! He bought my ring 2 weeks ago and got it last week so now I know he has it in his house (but I’m still waiting to get it on my finger!!). So yes, it is totally possible for him to get the ring before your trip. However, I learned to not get my hopes up because you don’t want to ruin your trip if he doesn’t propose and you’ll be disappointed. So I say expect nothing… and it’ll be a happy surprise if he does!

I got my ring almost a year after we initially started looking. Everyone is different though. Mine is custom, so it took a little while longer to track down my stone, so that’s a factor too. Either way, enjoy your trip and enjoy the waiting stage!

LongIslandRN: it took my Fiance months to buy the ring and then weeks to propose. If this is your first shopping trip, he might be trying to determine your taste and the budget he needs to buy your ring. Then comes shopping around and saving. Then comes planning the actual proposal.
Just like wedding planning is a process, so is proposal planning. just focus on how great the two of you are and know that the waiting is worth it!

LongIslandRN: We started looking at rings early this year, bought our rings in March/April, and our timeline for a proposal will land in the next 4-5 months. 🙂 I hope that helps! I’d just enjoy the vacation and not expect a proposal, if it happens then you’re surprised!

Depending on where you went to look at rings, getting a ring in for the size you needs usually takes a couple weeks. We got engaged the middle of February and had gone out and looked at rings 2 weeks before that.
We got engaged on a Saturday, and he decided that Monday of that week that he was going to propose, but knew he wouldn’t have time to get it ordered in the correct size that I needed – so he got the one from the store and had a sizer put in until we had ot actually resized.
I would definitely just enjoy the vacation and know that a proposal will happen sooner than later since you went out and looked. This is an exciting time! 🙂

Don’t have ring yet so can’t help you there, but how not to get your hopes up for a proposal, I can… What I do is think of all the reasons he WON’T propose on the trip. And if friends & family bug you the entire length of trip with texts & calls asking if it’s happened yet (yes, that happens every trip with me), laugh it off and say it ain’t happening.

We didn’t pick out the ring together but my FH bought the ring in December and proposed in April! So it really just depends! Just enjoy your trip you’re going to have an amazing time, Europe is AMAZING and just sleep soundly knowing he wants to marry you some day and that you two have all the time in the world. I know you’re probably so anxious because it’s so exciting but he’s going to do it when he’s ready to and it’ll be the perfect time, you’ll see!

It was a year between the time he took me ring shopping and the proposal. We also had a trip a few months after shopping as well as many other special occasions. My advice is to enjoy those moments for what they are. My proposal ended up being at home on a random week day.

LongIslandRN: SO and I went ring shopping in March. We’re planning to get married next year, but I haven’t gotten the ring yet. I’m kind of in the same boat as you. We’re going on vacation in August so I’m think that it’s going to happen then. Who knows though!? All you can do is wait.

We looked for the first time about 5 months into our relationship, and he proposed on our 9 month anniversary. It really can depend/vary on the man and the situation!

We began looking at rings in October and he proposed in December. I didnt know it, but he had bought me a ring BEFORE he ever took me ring shopping. I had ZERO idea. So he had a ring, didnt tell me, and then took me ring shopping to “get an idea of what I liked”. I actually tried on the one that he had purchased and said I didn’t love it, and found one that I loved. He went back the next day and swiched out settings for the one that I loved (i didnt find any of this out until after he proposed). He bought the diamond in November and then proposed in December. Those two months felt like the longest 2 months of my life haha.

LongIslandRN: Every guy is going to be different. Mine took me shopping a year or so ago and finally almost a year and a half later proposed. Unfortunately I don’t think you can gauge it, as everyone is different! Good luck though!

LongIslandRN: It really depends on all of the details-is the ring already made? How long for sizing? Does he want to just enjoy the vacation before proposing? So many factors.
Here’s my story (but I didn’t expect it to happen like this). My mom and I stopped in local jewelry store one evening (the night before Thanksgiving 2012) to look around and I found a ring that was absolutely perfect. My then boyfriend (now husband) didn’t like a ring I has already looked at because the reviews weren’t great. We went to see the ring together on Black Friday (so two days later) because they were having an incredible deal. He bought it that day. Knowing my husband, I thought it would for sure be a couple of weeks/months because it needed to be sized and he told me he wanted everything to be in place. Well, he surprised me. He had it sized by the next day, went to get it, and then took me to the places we went on our first date, proposing at a local park. I truly expected him to wait at least a few weeks, but love that he couldn’t wait.
So…it could go either way. You know he’s working on it, so just enjoy this time. If it happens on the trip, awesome! If not, it’s coming. 🙂

We first went shopping in January. I still do no have my ring. But he just put the deposit down the other day so it is now under construction (it’s custom). It’s suppose to take 3-4 weeks to make and we are going to Hawaii 5 weeks from tomorrow so I’m praying it’s done in time. I’m not really much help with not worrying about it on the trip because I’m doing the same thing haha
